About 50% through here. Enjoying it so far
Sad to admit this is my first club. Is there some sort of format I should be prepped for? I’ve just been utilizing notes for interesting passages on my kindle while I’ve been going along.

This is great to hear! There is no format. We really just do a “did you like it? Did you not?”
Sometimes one of us will find a Book Club questions online for a given book to spark interest. Usually there’s not much stopping us from talking a LOT.
I have yet to pick it up, got a bit detoured by the arrival of the new Haruki Murakami book which I preordered months ago. (Very much liked it, but it’s very much for Murakami fans, I think.) I’ve somehow found myself reading a non-fiction account by @KVV’s buddy Seth Wickersham about the New England Patriots (I am not a fan of theirs) but will dive into Creation Lake next. I did consider reading Rachel Kushner’s prior book, The Mars Room which I apparently have on my Kindle, and there were many, many opinions about that one. So I expect this to be divisive as well, which is great!
Getting excited about this relaunch and chatting books with you folks again!!
“Horse” by Geraldine Brooks has made a late push to be crowned my favorite book of the year. Feel I need to visit her back catalog.
Assume reading goals will be top of mind as we approach the New Year. Hopefully we can gather some interest in “the club” and keep it rolllng!!
Horse was so good, one of my absolute favorites from last year. People of the Book by her was also excellent, highly recommend.
For me my top two fiction books this year were Playground by Richard Powers and Birnam Wood by Eleanor Catton.
For non-fiction I finally picked up Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil on a trip to Savannah and couldn’t put it down. A delicious read.
I wanted to insert a poll to see what dates worked best for us but it seems to not be an option any more? Phooey.
I cannot do Wednesday January 15 so I’m selfishly not listing that but let’s find a date that works for all. Also, drafting off of @CMick26 i think it would be fun to come with our favorite book(s) we read the prior year (and maybe our least favorite):
Which dates work best for you?
I’m roughly 6% of the way into Creation Lake and having a mild panic attack if I’ve chosen a truly horrible selection as our way to get the book club going again…
I need to start still, but don’t stress! Sometimes not great books can still fuel good discussion
I’ve gone back and forth about 10x through 60ish %
Only day that would truly by out for me is the 29th.
It seemed Wednesdays were generally solid during our last go?
22nd might give some folks w New Years reading goals some time to read and join yet ?
A close reading friend of mine once handed me a book and said “you are going to HATE this book but you have to read it so we can talk about it”. Definitely agree in the discussion logic for sure.
Book club newbie here. I am trying to read more, but worried about jumping into a bad book. What’s bad about Creation Lake? Premise seems cool. Should I go for it or wait until the next one?
Jump on in! My concerns are more that it’s not fun, so far, and it just felt like there could have been a gentler way into the discussion than this, which I suspect isn’t for everyone. The replies have eased my concerns, let’s do it!
Wednesday January 22 works for me
22 works for me
just an intense book then?
Let’s lock it in! I’m starting and already excited to talk about …
Although I could see it veering a little into beach read. But we haven’t really done a lot of beach reads
No, not intense (at least imo). More like the author got steep on some topics and wanted you, the reader, to know it and (again, imo) the book/plot suffers for it.
Excited to get the band back together to discuss this one.
Hard agree. This was my first note. Got about 20% left.
1/22 or 1/29 should be good for me, just downloaded onto my iPad.
I’m about 65% of the way through this and I can say it should be a lively conversation. Won’t say anything past that but it’s something all right.
Just purchased. Intend to join. It’s been too long since my last book club book!
