Podcast: NLU 10 Year Oral History

I never knew the origin’s of TC’s nickname so that was fun to hear! The only question I still have about NLU nicknames (or NLU adjacent nicknames) is how did Franchise get his nickname? I’ve wondered for years now.

Believe it came from Rockets guard Steve Francis aka Stevie Franchise. Who could say though.

Absolutely a fantastic pod. Was really fun to relive so many of these milestones and think back to when I first found NLU (think it was right before TS Scotland came out, as that’s the first NLU video series I remember watching).

For me, the absolute highlight was this exchange about the founding of the Refuge:

@KVV: “Did you have any idea of the potential chaos you were bringing into everyone’s life when you brought the message board to fruition?”

@Randy: “I think yes and no to that. I think yes in the sense that I didn’t specifically know what kind of chaos it would bring to us, but I was aware that it likely would bring some type of chaos at some point.”

That’s a very lawyerly answer without admitting any specifics, and I’m sure you had some excellent coaching from some of the thousands of lawyers here on the board. And it absolutely sums up the Refuge 5 years in - good and bad!!

Loved this pod and recap! I remember being in sales and being on the road all the time from 2016-19. I needed something to pass the time and I stumbled across you guys early in 16.

I loved reminiscing on how truly shit the audio was. But I didn’t even notice at the time because the pod was right up my alley and you guys were talking about things that interested me in ways in which I also thought and spoke. You all resonate with the every day sicko golfer and that hasn’t swayed or changed. You bring light to golf and its community. You all have grown from just my entertainment at first to now a trusted place to get all my golf knowledge and news.

After listening to the pod for almost 8 years I decided it was time to join the nest. I did that after listening to the 10 year pod. I have always been a person that is pretty tight with money. If I’m not getting something in hand for money spent I have a hard time doing so. When it came to the nest I always wanted to join but like with other subscription services I couldn’t ever pull the trigger. After listening to the 10 year pod I realized how much you all have provided me in the last 8 years. Many hours of listening while on the road traveling, so many laughs at strapped and tourist sauce, literal tears at some of the stories shared, and a group of people with similar interests.

Thanks NLU!!!

Anyone who wasn’t around then needs to go back to the HV3 episode of the pod and hear Soly absolutely grinding to get blood from a stone.

Translation: “I knew I was creating some incredibly high crime neighborhoods but I had no idea how big they were going to be or what type of crime they would be engaging in”.

Awesome pod!

I haven’t heard the story behind @Randy visiting the delightful House of Prime Rib in SF. What happened there, @Tron? I never specified a temperature…always just assumed the prime ribby comes medium rare.

Thoroughly enjoyed that. Also made me realise how long I’ve been listening and following pre twitter ban.

Here’s to 10 more.

Strapped: Oxford. Every meal at Bagel and Deli.

Has to be a different bagel every time.

Bagel & Deli is extremely overrated. Best served going next door to Skippers.

My wife and SIL are Miami grads (SIL was same class as the boys). I’ve only been to Bagel and Deli a couple of times, but it was a mainstay for them.

Hard pass on Skippers. They exist only to put yard beer tubes on the table to get people drunk.

What I know about B&D might be a little refuge after dark content, but I will say this definitively. I would NOT trust the sanitation at that place.

Who goes to a greasy spoon and worries about sanitation?

I would trust the sanitation to be bad…hasn’t stopped me yet. This is coming from a guy that eats scrapple despite knowing what is in it.

As a relatively new listener (2.5 years or so, the golf bug bit me later in life) I really enjoyed the oral history pod.

I think we can all relate to a group chat of high school buddies randomly saying 1x a month “Hey we should make this a podcast!”

Kudos to the crew for having the balls to leave the day jobs behind and go for it. Good stuff.

Winter 2017-2018. In the preceding 6 months, my wife and I had:

  • moved to MN
  • started jobs
  • bought a house
  • bought 2 cars
  • got a dog
  • had our first child

I found NLU and TFE at the same time and drove through any back catalog throughout the winter for sanity. That winter, we had a blizzard on my 4/14 birthday. If I didn’t have the pod, I might have cracked.

On this thread of all places, under 100 posts and we have a regional food debate.
