Sunday golf?
Already playing at 9:30am, seriously considering meeting up with you for a double header…
I’ll join ya flex

Hey, Philly. Some friends and I are heading to the Poconos (Mt. Pocono/ Tannersville/ Stroudsburg) for a long weekend in mid-September, and we’re looking to play a few rounds of golf while there. Looks like the last discussion about courses in the area was almost 3 years ago, so I’m asking for some local knowledge again in case anything has changed since then. Here’s the list of courses we’re looking to choose from:
- Jack Frost
- Split Rock
- Mout Airy
- Pocono Manor
- Pocono Farms*
- Great Bear
- Shawnee
*Private, but a previous post mentioned it’s possible to get on by either asking or mentioning that you’re staying at a resort nearby.
I’d appreciate it if anyone can share any info, comment on which courses to play or stay away from, or add any courses that aren’t on the list.
For reference, we’re likely staying at a not-yet-booked AirBnB, so I’m also open to suggestions for lodging if anyone has any recommendations.
Thanks!
I can only speak for JF, Bear, and Airy. The first two you can’t go wrong with. More depends where you are staying. As for Mt. Airy, not a fan. Pretty gimmicky. Unless you want to hit the casino after, you have better choices elsewhere.
Kind of depending on where you are staying and how much driving you are looking to do, would kind of tell you where you want to play. Are you trying to do 36? Just a couple days?
Thanks! Happy to drive 30-45 minutes if the course is worth it. The BnBs we’re looking at are all 10 miles or less from Mount Airy, since we’ll likely get to the casino one or two of the nights. Looking to play 27/36 on a Saturday and 18 on a Sunday (or the other way around). You sort of reaffirmed my thoughts on Airy – a previous post mentioned that it’s a collection of replica holes, so I think we’ll still visit Airy, but for the casino instead of the golf.
If you are looking for playing over 18 in a day, the best pairing would be JF/Split Rock, or Great Bear/Shawnee for logistical purposes.
All of them are going to be similar. Tree lined holes, elevation change. JF is the most expensive, but is also the best kept. I have never had poor conditions there.
I’ve heard good things about Hideway Hills. I’ve never played there personally though.
Anyone else in here mostly down the shore on weekends in the summer? Always trying to find a group to play with down there. In Ocean City or Sea Isle from about mid May through September, again on weekends.
Seaview
Avalon
Shore Gate
Ballamore
Green Tree
McCullough’s
Then two decent 9 hole courses:
Heritage Links
Pines at Clermont
I personally hate hideaway and will never go back, but they have lodging on site and are favorably priced so I can see the appeal lol
What do you hate about it? My friends who love it are not golfing sickos like us.

Way too quirky and gimmicky for me. For example, they have an island green that follows a blind tee shot, but you better hope you didn’t hit your tee shot too well otherwise you’ll be in the hazard… but if you hang back to make sure you’re safe you have a blind shot into an island green ![]()
Jack Frost is my favorite up in that area by far. Second everything that @BJArmour said about the Mt Airy course, just straight up not a good time lol
If you are interested in driving 40ish minutes check out Frosty Valley in Danville. Was a private club that has opened up to some public play. They also have cabins on site if you wanted to stay overnight and get some local brews.
Frosty Valley is a fun course. We hold our Bloomsburg baseball alumni event there every year. But if you are in Stroudsburg area, it is a decent hike.
Pocono Farms is a true delight - my buddy bought two different properties nearby so that he could play there anytime.
While we are sort of on this subject, I think I have been effectively priced out of any house down the shore. My wife and I have discussed getting a place in the Poconos but don’t really know much of the towns/lakes/tiny hamlets.
We joined a club this year, so it might be that this is a year or two out, but some recommendations on nice towns easily reachable from Philly might give us an excuse to head up there and scout it out.
Cheers.
My family has had a house on Lake Wallenpaupack since the late 70’s. They bought lake front in 93. Someone from our family is up there every weekend from Spring to Fall and occasionally winter time. We will never leave. Love the lake and all things around it. Last time I looked though, prices for houses on lake front/2nd tier have risen to almost shore prices. Mostly New Yorkers that have left the city.
