Definitely good news after over a year of hearing next to nothing at all. I would think a year’s delay is not altogether unexpected on a project like this, hopefully it is the only one though! Can’t wait to see the whole facility let alone the restored olde course. Hopefully some echos of Karakung remain!
This is such fantastic news! A year’s delay should have been expected I guess, but so happy it’s officially happening.
Not specific but does give some insight that they have plans / thinking about rolling out a tiered greens fee structure based on residence:
The course will be financially self-sustaining, said Maguire, who envisions the driving range generating enough revenue to pay for operations and community programming.
The course will remain affordable, said Ott Lovell, although she expects fees to rise slightly. City officials will be involved in setting the fees, she said, and are recommending a tiered fee structure that’s cheapest for residents of surrounding neighborhoods, more expensive for people coming from the region, and priciest for people visiting from other parts of the country.
Hughes hopes the historically significant course will once again draw tourists from the region, as well as the world.
“[It will] have a dramatic impact on the city of Philadelphia and the region,” he said.
Love the concentric circle pricing model, it works for other clubs so I’d hope it would work well here.
That is, as long as I’m in the “local rate” circle, I’ll be thrilled.
Anyone know anything about McCall Golf Club? They have very reasonable pricing; however, it looks like they are a short course. Very short. Not sure if anyone has any info on it.
I believe it was one of those old company-owned courses for use by the brass and company employees. Now I think it’s just your standard private course. It definitely is short, more executive style but I think it’s on pretty good land with some good holes. Never played it but heard/read some good things. It’s right next to Cobb’s Creek and what used to be City Line driving range but will now be reverted back to the part of the Old Course they lost during wartime. I’ll see if I can find some of the old resources I found reading about it.
Website claims it has Ross/Flynn origins, totally forgot about that. Some good reading here, makes me want to call them up and try to get out and play it!
Appreciate it. They say it was a PECO only course until 2004. Still about 60% PECO employees apparently. And I’ll save you your call. Can’t get on unless you pay for membership or a member takes you out.
Appreciate that. Maybe if you pursue membership and ever want a playing partner you’ll call me!
Forgot to say. They truly believe par is irrelevant. Solid par 66 course.
i played McCall in GAP last year and it’s a pretty interesting place. Really short course but pretty fun. Nice clubhouse setup and a small driving range right next to the practice green and first tee. lots of elevation but walkable. nice greens and will definitely make you a better player. sits right inside the neighborhood. one of the guys i was playing against walked to the course for the match which i’m insanely jealous of. my partner and i decided before we saw the course that we wouldnt hit driver and it worked out. fairways and greens, fairways and greens.
Mike is my sons golf coach! We will be at BCC this Sunday for his lesson actually. I have never played the place but it looks awesome. I like how it is pretty much out on its own.
When it warms up you’ll have to come play! I love how it’s free of houses. The front and back are so different from each other. It’s really a fun course - this will be my 5th season there!
Anyone know of a local organization I can donate some used irons to? Might be a few years old but are in good condition and hope some organization can put them to good use as opposed to sitting in my basemet.
I’m sure the First Tee of Philadelphia would be open to donations
Another option—if you live by a high school that might have some economically disadvantaged neighborhoods you could donate them to the Athletic Dept for a kid who wants to play but can’t afford clubs. You can find AD contact info on any district website.
Thrilled to see this is an Inside Golf production. One of my winter traditions is watching Ol’ Harry talk me through some of the courses I regularly play in the area which winter prevents me from getting out on. Can’t wait to watch!
It was kinda shocking hearing Harry say he’s never played Cobbs.
I had that same response.
Listening to this week’s recap pod, and was stunned to learn that the Saudis are trying to host an event within the next four months…and it’ll be at Philly Cricket Club?
