PGA 2K23 Refuge Tour - Info Post #9562 - S24 Begins 11/25

Based on my experience playing the game right now, you could earn enough in one round of myCareer to pay for a few sleeves of balls. I havent won a tournament yet in career mode so I am sure it will pay out more if I did. I am sure there are players out there that would prefer to play on fast greens vs slow greens, I know I do so I probably wont use the ball that slows the green speed down anyway. The roll out on approach shots was nuked. The balls hardly roll on the green anymore and are much more receptive to the spin you add pre shot. I dont think the ball issue is going to be a thing at all. The biggest disparity is going to be the players who do not upgrade their golfers skills through the fittings and architype settings.

I’ve heard positive things about the fittings, but I have to be honest, my primary concern with the game is it appears they are making it more ā€˜in-depth’ and adding much more that is needed to be successful. One of my favorite things with 2K21 is, I could throw it on, and play for 20 minutes, or 2 hours depending on what I wanted to do. If they’ve now eliminated the ability to just jump in and get after it, I’ll be playing a lot less.

My understanding is that once you earn a fitting through playing, you then have to pay VC to equip the fitting. There’s also no plug and play functionality until you’ve earned/bought a lot of VC (don’t exactly how much yet) to level up your player. It’s pay to play with your money or your time if you want to have a competent player you can use.

I know of one person who wrote a macro for his mouse to play 3 click golf on a dummy course last night when he went to bed. Intrigued to see how much VC he ends up with today when he posts an update. He was estimating he’d earn around 8,000 VC.

With @JBors no longer around…who can we turn to for writing such unnecessarily complex codes so we can all continue to enjoy our virtual golf???

Oh and don’t worry the new game probably just got a lot dumber with today’s announcement…

Did 2K motion capture Riggs’ awful putting stroke too?

2K seems to be catering to an audience that is not me with these new additions to the game. At least they’re all optional extras I won’t have to see if I don’t want to.

The plan is still to move forward with 2K as the game of choice for the Refuge Tour. Obviously will have eyes on the EA game coming next year, but I expect that will be total micro-transaction hell for online play.

Can’t wait to see how they implement a golf version of Ultimate Team

Admittedly I’ve not played any EA sports games since the old TW games and NCAA football 2003 on the Gamecube. Did some brief reading on what Ultimate Team is, seems like it’s really popular with the FIFA crowd? Haven’t seen any marketing material about it, but there’s potential for cup style pvp team play which could be good if done right.

Honestly I hope there is room in the golf video game space for both 2K and EA, as much as I don’t want to spread myself too thin with different games I hope competition makes the products better

We could just play the 2k21 game until the EA game starts next year.

Things are still nice over here on Switch Island!

I’d bet a lot of money that the EA game won’t really have a way to manage a league like this the way 2K has societies. Also don’t think they will have a course creator either

Even if they do, 1) it probably wont be as robust, and 2) it will have a tiny fraction of the custom courses for a few years.

Early review of the new game.
Swing timing is still very shaky, especially on Xbox. This may also just be me but there’s times I go to take the club back and the game says, nope, start over. Like get the club to maybe knee height and it goes back to address.
I’m also not a fan of the clubs, balls, attribute shit. It’s way over the top and very silly. Idk how the admins would even regulate a society with all this crap.
I wanted to be team 2k really bad on this one because I’ve loved this game since the Golf Club came out. But right out of the gate I immediately want to go back to the old game (which was really starting to annoy me with the swing timing; yeah, I know, just get a playstation) or just wait til EA comes out. This tour has been a blast but this game might kill it.

Edit: You can change the look of your caddie. Why? No idea.

This is a truly unenjoyable experience.

Maybe we’ll have to start a 3-click-swing off-shoot tour.

This actually sounds like controller drift. I have no idea if that’s actually a thing on Xbox, but on the PS5, the two initial controllers we bought are unusable with 2K21 because of it. It just looks like the absolute worst case of club waggles.

If it turns out that’s what is needed, I’ll vote to switch to Mario Golf

Legit first round on the game using some golfer named Michael Jordan I started with an eagle and made an ace. I might retire now.

Played my first two rounds today, forgot entirely about swing calibration and was +13 after two rounds and missed the KFT finals cut (using master swing difficulty). Went into swing calibration after and started hitting it better. Putting still seems quite similar to the previous game, although slow moving slope beads appear to cause more break than they used to.

Regarding in game currency, I made $775 for those two rounds. Checking on the golf ball performance packs, the highest end legendary sleeve costs $900, so while I still don’t agree with a golf ball’s performance characteristics changing the way a course plays like that (no bounce, no roll, etc), it appears that they are attainable to even a casual player.

I still need to dive into fittings and how that can boost a player’s stats.

The game is not without bugs, I dunked a chip shot and the game thought it went into the water, so had to take a penalty stroke and drop on the green.

Anyway, that’s enough for day 1 I think, it’s frustrating how difficult it is to re-learn the swing when it’s on the same game engine and overall not a huge departure from the previous game. I am a multi-sport athlete and I need to go racing in Spa now.

Edit: I just realized I was used to Pro difficulty on the old game and was using Master on the new one, so that certainly explains some of the perceived difficulty difference. Might move back to Pro, if TGCT really is going Master I might be fully done with that.

I forgot how hard master was on the old game. I felt like I got pretty good at master at the end of season 2 seasons ago, and was moving my way up the ladder. Then they went to pro and I got to Kinetic pretty quickly, got dropped to A for a spell, but ended up back in Kinetic for most of the season. Then they went back to mater for the off-season events and holy crap! I feel like I had to completely re-learn the swing.

Yep, that was it. Fired it back up and shot -5 with Pro difficulty. Still a learning curve for me since I’m switching to a PS5 controller from a PS4 one, the way they did the chipping in this game means I need the vibration feedback without the power meter.
