Still haven’t played Kellog, just haven’t made the effort. I love Madison for what it is. My dream would be they redo the greens and make them wild and shave down everything around them so you could putt from everywhere. Make it super fun and super playable.
That’s a great idea for Madison. Would definitely bring business to the course that’s probably getting the least play of the 3.
While we’re talking Peoria - RIP Detweiler. It’s been like a decade now and I wasn’t around to play it but I’ve walked it as a trail before and you can tell it had some fun short 4s.
It was the most golfed course in the city and they still closed it down. It was a very fun course. Wish it was still open because I could walk to it from where I live.
My coworkers down there told me it was to keep one course open in each section of the city. With the north end already having Kellogg’s 27 holes right next to the learning center they thought it made sense to close Detweiler.
We’re talking about down by the river Detweiler park? Never knew there was a course over there.
I used to drive by Donovan Park on Knoxville every day and always thought that former course looked like a fun walk.
Never mind my post. I was talking about Donovan not Detweiller. #old
If anyone is heading out to Kellogg this year I’d be down to make the drive North for a meetup if schedules align. I played Kellogg A LOT when I lived there in the 00’s and it was always my favorite when I had the park district pass. Back then it was only $300-$400 bucks for season pass.
Coyote Creek is on my 2024 list to get back up and play as well. It’s not really walkable, or very easy, but played it semi frequently as well.
Many great affordable golf courses in the Peoria/Pekin area.
Coyote Creek is tons of fun been way too long since I’ve been down there. Same with Metamora
and of course a few hours later I get a text asking if I want to play Kellogg tomorrow and I can’t make it…
Yes, but you are playing Pekin on Sunday.
Very true.
I also meant Donovan. I played Detweiler once and didn’t love it.
Gotcha. There were also a group of influential people who realllly wanted that converted to a park.
So I meant to throw this out yesterday but got sidetracked. We’re hosting our annual GFPD fundraiser on May 17th at Weibring (ISU), and wanted to let you guys know in case anyone wanted to snag a group and play in our scramble.
We just opened up registration yesterday and we’re somehow already nearly sold out - it’s a good problem to have but I’m still stunned. I’d love to see a Refuge group though if it works out!
If you can’t make it to golf, I’ll certainly share again when we get closer as we have lots of good local auction items too - both golf and non-golf related. And you can bid online the entire week of May 12-19. Thanks!!
Was across 29 from the south end of the park. If it hadn’t flooded it was actually a pretty tough par 3 course. Lot of 160-180 par 3’s then ended with 2 short 4’s. Never in great condition but growing up the learning center didn’t exist so it was the only option for young hitters(under 12) unless you drove to Fon Du Lac par 3 in East Peoria.
Donovan is where I grew up playing the game and am still bitter about it closing. I had a junior pass and would wear that place out. It was $100 for under 18 and the only limitations were tee times before 3 and after 6 during the week and then had to play after like 1 or 2 on the weekends. My parents take their dog there on walks sometimes and my dad will send me random pictures asking where he is on the former golf course. My grandpa and dad told me a story that about 25 or so years ago Proctor approached the park district about buying the land that Donovan was on and would also pay for a new course to be built elsewhere and the park district said no. The back 9 at Donovan chasing the sun with my dad has a special place in my heart.
For those who haven’t played Kellogg you aren’t missing anything. It’s a pretty boring layout that only gets a ton of play because of where it is IMO. The new routing is actually the original routing according to my dad.
Just checked out the GPS and I don’t remember the Kellogg routing that well but do recall what is currently 6 was either hole 1 or 10 because I always remember starting on that dogleg left. Can also confirm I played it a lot because my living proximity just off Willow Knolls. Donavan was a fun test but seemed to skew older golfers or younger when I lived there. Newman was a good test of golf but seemed to favor the longer hitters.
Correct. 6 was 1 for my entire life growing up. So from the picture someone sent me of the new routing which is actually the original lol:
1-5 = old 14-18,
6 = old 1
7-9 = old 11-13
10 stays
11-18 = old 2-9
Nailed it.
I always liked Donovan over Kellogg.
