I’m thinking they somehow changed the timestamp on theirs after they saw your tweet.

Trust me. I went to their page, didn’t see the announcement, and crafted the tweet. Must’ve missed it by seconds

So OP2 is going to have to be in early August then

I may have some news on that front shortly… :eyes:

Well, after 11 months since the original post, a really busy week of leading and playing, volunteering for two days at the NCAA regional in Cle Elum, showing @Mwilhelm10 around The Home Course and Chambers for the Fourball (which I guess I must’ve done poorly haha), and watching Phil do the near impossible, I finally have time to sit down, reflect, and give thanks.

I had a lot of people ask…

“Did you know the weather was gonna be this good?”

I mean, no, well yes, but no. I did pick those dates almost a year in advance. I knew that May can be sneaky really good. But of course we could’ve had what they’re dealing with at the Fourball today:

That’s a lot of black windbreakers and rain-suits.

Was it close to a 50/50 chance? Maybe. But sometimes you just have to believe in fate.

For “Day 0” on the Thursday before, a small collective of guis who flew in early and PNW guis that wanted to start the event a day earlier went around West Seattle, probably the best muni in the city of Seattle.

And then after, @JCO, @Fluff, @LukeBoatright, @OTPLefty, @bmasters, and I went to the Mariners game, where we almost watched a no-hitter.

After the game, I went and picked up all the New Belgium beer from my house (didn’t want it sitting in the car during the round at West Seattle or at the baseball game) and drove down to the house in Gig Harbor.

Shoutout to New Belgium for the beer and shoutout @JohnP for letting me stay in the house. I think I would’ve gone insane from physical and mental exhaustion by the end if I had to drive further.

Day 1:

I wake up after probably not enough hours of sleep to start the coffee maker for the house and see a message from @rabsie about the fog that morning at The Home Course.

(I’m sorry, I don’t remember who I took this from in the whatsapp chat)

Google Photos

It’s soup. Thicc ass soup, with three or four c’s likely needed. This picture was sent from the par 3 4th… yeah, I wouldn’t know there’s a golf hole there either if I didn’t already know.

Thank you @ausbab for this picture on 1:

When I saw the message from @rabsie, I was pretty upset that we had to play in that. I’m not sure if anyone in the house noticed, but I went upstairs and called @rabsie, telling him to put his foot down with the pro shop and the starter to not make us play in that.

I got a text shortly after… they were making us go out into it.

I’m sorry to anyone that played in the early wave. That fucking sucked. Trust me, I was just as mad as any of you, but tried to keep a smile on to be a good host. No one should ever have to yell to the group in front or behind to make sure we don’t kill one another. It’s not a problem we almost ever have to deal with here, as much as @sundaybag might think I was lying about my “we don’t really have a marine layer here like the actual coast” comment.

When my group got to 4, it was just burning off, and the fog was rolling thru like waves.

Google Photos

Thankfully, I think everyone was able to see Mt. Rainier not too long into their round.

Google Photos

I didn’t see anyone post any photos of the group lounging outside post-round, but it was a good time, even though my time was cut short by 1 of the group’s breaking the scoring spreadsheet :joy:

To really cap off the hellish day, the house’s dinner at Anthony’s (local seafood restaurant chain) that night was maybe the worst experience I’ve had at one of their restaurants… Sorry guis. I promise it’s usually a great experience. @Tron did good research, okay? I think that was a COVID-affected smaller staff for sure.

Day 2:

There really aren’t words to describe this day. It was truly magical. 36 holes at Chambers on a perfect day in near perfect conditioning as the overcast first couple hours kept the greens from being a perfect speed in the morning.

If you haven’t seen the photos, scroll up or go look at attendees’ instagram pages. It might be the closest thing to @Tron’s “This might be too good” coming true.

Both @Tron and @sundaybag asked me if I called the sailboat to come sit behind the 15th green for this photo :joy:

Google Photos

And here you’ll see the last group out in our afternoon wave on 17 green with the sun already set. We were playing an 18 hole, 8 man, 4 team/ball alt-shot. It was @leric90 and myself vs. @JohnP and @OTPLefty vs. Squid and @Tron vs. @catshannon and @sundaybag. Yes, there were some strokes given out.

Google Photos

After @leric90 drove the ball way left on 5 and we never found it, me putting @leric90 on a horrendous lie on the side of a dune on 6, and @leric90 shanking a flop on 6, we were out of the overall match pretty quickly.

However…

we did have a side game going with @JohnP and @OTPLefty. They easily won the front and the 18, but the back 9 and our press were close. We happened to be 1 down thru 7 on the back. On 17, we made the comfiest of three putt bogies to win the hole after @JohnP and @OTPLefty made a sloppy double.

AS on the back and the press standing on 18 tee.

@leric90 hooks it into the first bunker on the left. Damn near jail. I splash it down the fairway to about the DJ spot. I don’t remember the route @OTPLefty and @JohnP took, but they were halfway to the 1st tee box, about 150 out after 2 shots.

@leric90 makes up for all our wrongs. He LACES his 5 wood from 230. I said, “oh that’s gonna be so good” when it took off. When it landed on the front right corner of the green, I followed up with “oh that’s gonna be REALLY good.”

What it did on the green, we couldn’t see from the where we were with the elevation and the fading light. But from the ever-growing cheers/“Oohs,” I’m gonna guess it took the same path as Spieth’s in the final round of the US Open, coming off the back right corner of the backstop. It was about 5 feet away (as much as @leric90 tries to say it was closer than that)

@JohnP and @OTPLefty hit the green with their third, about 20-25 feet away, so I know that I have to make this to have no blood in our side game cause while @OTPLefty didn’t make anything, he had the speed down all afternoon.

Google Photos

That’s me crouching, reading the putt. It took a long time for me to be able to hit it. @Tron blade/shanked a chip, so he and Squid played ping-pong on the green for a bit. The thought that crossed my mind cause it was taking so long… “don’t DJ it.” I had swiped a few putts that afternoon, and I could see myself missing low like DJ so easily from the same spot.

I RAMMED it in. There was no doubt that it was going in unless I swiped it.

Google Photos

I scanned the crowd for @leric90, which was bigger than this photo and enjoying the (shoutout) New Belgium beer, dropped the putter, ran up, and hugged him. All the mediocre golf was wiped away. We ended up only losing $20 each for the overall 8 person alt shot match.

I want to say thank you to anyone that said thank you to me for that magical day. Trust me, it does mean something to the organizer. 36 holes at Chambers is physically and mentally exhausting. Doing it with a fair amount of money on the line in the afternoon is even more so. Doing it with a lack of sleep and everything that happened on Day 1 is mind and body-numbing. So, if I didn’t seem thankful in the moment, I’m not sure what I was doing for a time until I was in the parking lot. I was pretty out of it. So many people gave me hugs and thanks that I completely lost track of who did. I do know that I hugged @I_have_the_yips for a really long time cause he paid for my entire day at Chambers, and for that, I am forever thankful. Thank you so, so much Sam.

I sat on my bumper/in my trunk trying to take in everything that happened. I watched the sky turn to night. I watched all the cars climb the hill out of Chambers. Just myself and @bmasters, who stuck around to see if everything was ok.

I was in complete shock… until I wasn’t. I hugged @bmasters goodbye for the night, closed the trunk, sat in my car and shed some tears.

I knew that the pizza at the house was delivered and getting cold. I knew everyone was there debriefing their days and where they’d rank Chambers on their lists of favorites…

But letting out those few tears of joy were so… cathartic? That’s probably not the right word. It was so necessary. I was able to finally able to open my mind and soul and eternalize all of it. That feeling is the reason I love to host. To make everyone have as much fun as possible in this short, chaotic time we have. Thank you to everyone who attended. You just being there was enough to be honest haha.

Day 3:

I don’t have a ton of pictures from this day at Gold Mountain (Olympic). Having about 16 hours of sleep total from Thursday night-Saturday night, along with everything else, made me not document as much as I should.

Google Photos

Google Photos

Then you add in that I’m now spending another round duking it out with @JohnP and the day went by fast again.

Once again, it was @leric90 and myself teaming up, but this time it was @sundaybag and @JohnP battling us.

Quick tangent… All the locals who didn’t hear this story will love it: I told @sundaybag weeks before that Gold Mountain was Crash Course-worthy after I found out he and @Tron were filming at Chambers for a Crash Course that Day 0/Thursday. Of course, they didn’t have enough time. I didn’t remind him again the days leading up, but on the 3rd tee, @sundaybag turns to me and says, “Ya know, Matt, we should’ve done a Crash Course video here.” So look out for the pod about Gold Mountain soon, and maybe a video next year? Truly, who can say?

(Also, the Crash Course video about Chambers is EYE. PORN. so look out for that too).

Back to the match. Even after the match, there was some confusion about how many presses there were, but I can say definitively that things were tight again. On 16, I roll in a 40 footer from the front fringe for birdie and let out a “LETS GO!” or “COME ON!” yell (not sure which… I blacked out for a second). And then watch @sundaybag roll in a 30 footer on top of me, letting out a “LETS GO!” himself. The quick bro hug/shoulder or chest bump on that green was well deserved. Pretty sure I said, “Is that any good?” walking off after that.

We won’t detail what happened on 18 unless @sundaybag and @JohnP want to, but for the second day in a row, @leric90 and I scrape out a no blood result.

I know a ton of people left after the round or earlier that day, but shoutout to the small group that stuck around tailgating in the Gold Mountain parking lot drinking the (shoutout) New Belgium beer while @Mattyeds and I entered all the scores. Thank you, Matty for making that go twice as fast.

Congrats to @Phillip360 for winning the 2021 Olympic Prolific!

He earned the sign that (shoutout) Squid made, an engraved wine glass, and a ball marker that a friend of @notjk made.

And congrats to @ty1x for earning the other NIT spot! (we don’t have a photo of him. He had to leave early. That’s me in the second photo)

Merch/Charity:

Another announcement I made at the end, between the merch sales and other donations made by JScore, davidc, and Phillip360, we raised almost $1k in charity for Treehouse. Thank you everyone that supported the cause

Also, if your name is “Katherine” or know someone that has that name… DM me. I still have your merch, and we can figure out how to send it/get it to you. There is a last name, but don’t want to dox anyone. Hopefully that first name is enough information! If I need to, I will post the last name eventually. Don’t worry, Sarah and khernandez, I still have yours.

Thank you again to everyone that participated in the event.
Thank you to everyone else that didn’t but still bought merch.
Thank you to the NLU crew for bringing this community together.

I could spend all day saying thank you to the courses, family, etc. but I won’t.

You all contributed and made the event as great as it was.

So how about we try and bring that same magic next year? After messaging with @Tron about when the Bandon and Gearhart events will be in 2022, the PGA at Southern Hills, Memorial Day weekend the weekend after that…

I think it’s safe to say that we will be aiming for the same weekend in May.

May 13-15, 2022

No, I’m not pushing it back to August for the US Women’s Am next year. While the conditions were great for the upcoming Fourball, the nets in places weren’t as fun.

No, this isn’t an official confirmation; I have set nothing up with the courses yet. Chambers is busy with a national event, ya know? No, I don’t have a sign-up sheet for it yet. No, I don’t know how the weekend format will shake out, though 36 at Chambers will probably happen again. Just keep it in the back of your head for now.

Cheers. Love y’all.

PS. Sorry for the separate posts. Mention limits and all… ya know
