OATW Match Play - 2025 Second Round Underway?

I think your head is in the right place but realistically how many people are going to be traveling across the state on a regular basis playing matches?

I mean half the pods, if not more, couldn’t get matches in with people in their backyard.

I’ll agree with @Creags on the simplicity point as well. I’m excited for the match play season though, however it ends up working out!

What @pjsutherland is saying about home-and-home matches makes sense to me. Instead of having to play a 36-hole match that might be spread out over months and requires a bunch of planning, we just view it as two separate matches, with a bonus point awarded once the second match is complete.

Okay. I read back through the thread where we were discussing this a couple weeks ago to refresh myself and figure out where we are. I think I’m just going to lay it all out and then let it sit and get reactions for a day or so before we make a ruling here.

This came about partially because we put in place the minimum 3 match rule combined with the fact that you cannot play the same person more than once rule.

the whole point is to play with people you maybe have played with before or at least a variety

The question was posed about the potential for a home and home match with one person. I thought allowing a home and home, but having it only count as one match, BUT awarding a home and home point would be ideal. This would mean that you would still need to play two other matches with two other people AND it would award a PPM bonus point which would be a nice incentive for playing the same person twice, even to the loser of the match.

If I’m understanding the proposal here correctly we would count both 18 hole matches as their own match and then award a bonus point on top of that. (Please correct me if I’m wrong).

I’m not fully against that idea but it does make me worried that if we are only requiring 3 matches, what is to stop someone from playing a home and home against someone, winning both legs and then playing a single third match against a second player and calling it quits for open play?

My math there: two wins, a bonus point, and even a loss in the third match would be 8 points for a PPM of 2.67 which is pretty damn strong.

Meanwhile the person who lost both matches of the home and home sits on a 1.5 PPM and has some work to do. Whereas if we did the home and home as a single match they would be on 2 PPM and still very in it.

I guess that’s why I sort of net out here personally at either counting home and home as a single match, or we don’t award the bonus point.

I want to emphasize though having said all of this, I do not consider myself a dictator here and this tournament is for all of us to have fun and enjoy. I want what the people will think is best/easiest/will bring the most joy.

So, let me hear it. Thoughts?

The TC don’t be a scumbag rule

Correct. One bonus point for completing the two matches in the home and home.

Nothing besides the TC rule would stop them… however, I dare to guess anyone dedicated to this enough to schedule a home and home wouldn’t stop at three matches over the next 8 months if they win the first two.

I guess don’t lose both matches? If someone loses two matches they should have ground to make up compared to those that won and have up to 8 more matches in order to do that.

I’ve said my take. Home and home shouldn’t be one 36 hole match unless all matches are 36 holes. I think it should be two 18 hole matches with one bonus point for both participants to justify the logistics of playing someone twice in two different locations and taking up two of your match spots. However, if that bonus point doesn’t work or feel fair for you, I’m not dying on that hill.

@golf4miami is both the reigning champion and commissioner - whatever he wants to do is fine. It’s an internet golf club net competition, let’s not get all butthurt

If it comes down to one or two people next May thst this actually affects them we can bring it back here for a Refuge quorum

Nobody is butthurt; we’re just trying to get clarity on some of the rules to make sure everyone is on the same page.

Ryan is the final decision maker and we all appreciate his efforts to manage this thing!

For sure, definitely not reading any butt hurt or anything in the discussion. Just people trying to make sure we’re on the same page and understand the rules we’re playing under. Honestly love to see people passionate about trying to make this as fair as possible.

Patrick getting defensive as always, geesh. BTW that rain after I dropped you off last Saturday was wild. Traffic was almost stopped on 71 for like half a mile.

Leaving the comment period open for a bit longer, but if no one else feels all that strongly about it then we might go with @pjsutherland’s suggestion that home and home counts as two matches with maybe just a general TC way rule that if you play a home and home, please make sure you get in a 4th match with a 3rd playing competitor.

I really like the additional point available for scheduling home and home matches, I think that’s helpful for people who have a hard time getting out or who might just lose a lot (me  ).

It really can go either way, 36-hole or two 18-hole matches. You do get higher points available with the 36 hole way (max of 4 PPM available) vs the two 18-hole matches (max 3.5 PPM available). So maybe that’s a good way to prevent sandbagging by going @pjsutherland suggestion.

The only way to know is to try it out!

So if I’ve got this right each home and home will be play 18 and pick your best 9 so that the total ends up as a single 18 hole match, with a bonus point if I bike over 10 miles to the course.

Note: Ignore this stupid comment. I agree with @Creags, simple as possible is best.

Not at all.

The way it’s looking is that each home and home 18 will be it’s own 18 hole match and will account for two of your required 3 maximum of 10 matches for open play.

You then get a bonus point for completing a home and home series.

Come get some, pal. I’ve barely skimmed all these comments so my uninformed opinion is more important than anyone else’s!

Alright. I’ve updated the official rules post above to add the following text:

Home and Home Defined As: Two single 18 hole matches each counting as their own match toward the 3-10 rule with full points being awarded for both matches.

I’ve also removed the part where I double posted basically everything and didn’t even realize it.

We’ve got 15 players signed up already which I think is pretty damn cool and I know for a fact that matches are already/have already taken place!

Good luck to everyone!

As a complete newcomer to this thing, is there a formal way that matches are organized/scheduled/chartered/declared/sworn/etc.? Or do we just seek out willing opponents, publicly disparage their name, and later meet them on a dusty road in the middle of town to see who can draw their pistol faster?

Haven’t scrolled all the way down yet, but wouldn’t the easiest solution here be that you’re required to play 3 different opponents instead of just 3 matches? That way a home and home can count both matches, but people still have to go out and get involved more
