OATW Match Play - 2025 Second Round Underway?

Well done!

It was truly a blast getting to play @golf4miami yesterday. He’s a tough out – his short game was scalding and his driver went forever. Every time I thought I had an opening, his wedges and putter quickly closed it. Also, Ryan is underselling his birdie on 6 – he was 25 yards left, at the bottom of a hill, and hit a humungous flop to 6 feet. Truly outstanding (and demoralizing) shot.

Congrats, again, to @golf4miami on the win!

Like I said yesterday, a great day with great company, on a great course. The scores may have made it look like I won it easily, but there was nothing easy about it. Every single hole won required something. Mentally just extremely taxing golf as evidenced by how I finished 8-5-5 after the match concluded.

Truly an honor brother. What you and this community have continued to do to support my fight and so many others in my shoes has been nothing less than extraordinary. Looking forward to teeing it up with you soon!

Alright everyone! It’s time for the 2024 Ohio State Match Play to get under way! As a reminder, there are going to be a couple changes for the 2024 edition. The first, is that we are starting immediately.

Second change: there will be no more pods for this tournament. We’re taking @PersistentlyOverPar’s idea of allowing for a more free flowing system for matches to be played. This way players aren’t tied down to certain regions or areas or even people to play. The idea here is again to get more players involved and to not tie people’s hands.

Third change: points will be scored slightly differently. Again, we’re taking the suggestion of @PersistentlyOverPar here.

  1. One point for each match played.
  2. One additional point for a tie or two for a win.
  3. One bonus point for a match >100mi/>1.5 hrs from home
  4. One bonus point for a home and home match played with the same person.

Home and Home Defined As: Two single 18 hole matches each counting as their own match toward the 3-10 rule with full points being awarded for both matches.

This gives people not only motivation to play matches, but to travel to play matches and to try and play with people who they haven’t played with before. Of note, you can only score one travel point per calendar day. This is to keep people from traveling to play three matches and scoring three bonus points and stack scoring.

Fourth change: Players will be chosen for the round of 32 elimination bracket based on their PPM (points per match) number, NOT their total points. This change is in an effort to level the playing field for the players who maybe cannot play as much as other players. Making it PPM instead of total points rewards those who are playing well over those who are playing a lot of matches. Tie breakers will be total points, then total matches played, then bonus points for distance travelled being the tie breakers in that order. If needed, a coin flip from there.

THINGS THAT ARE NOT CHANGING

  • We will still have a 32 player elimination bracket seeded roughly by the PPM metrics and location of the competitors who advance.
  • You will need to play a minimum of 3 matches between play opening in the Fall and the end of group play in May. HOWEVER, we are going to institute a maximum of 10 matches total be counted between the Fall and Spring. So, chose when you play your matches wisely.
  • You can only play someone in the Open Play segment of the tournament once. So, no stacking matches against the same person over and over again.
  • Total entry fees will be $25 with a slight change. We are only going to require each player who plays a match during the entry period to pay a $5 entry fee and then if you make the elimination rounds we will collect the other $20 to help pay for prizes/Final/charity. etc.
  • This will still be a net event.
  • TC’s rule still applies: don’t be a scumbag.

Excited to get this going!

Clarification - there’s a bonus point if you play a home and home against someone, but later on it says you can only play a person once in the entry round. So, can we or can we not play a person twice?

The home and home counts as a single match for the purposes of recording on the spreadsheet. That’s why we made the compromise of offering up a bonus point for playing the same person twice, but it still counts as a single match. Make sense?

So you’re saying it’d be a 36-hole match for a home and home? I don’t think I’m clear on what is meant by home and home. Sorry :man_facepalming:t3::man_facepalming:t3:

Correct, 36 hole match.

Up to the competitors how they want to score those 36 holes to figure out who won or if there was a draw. Draw points still in play.

Wouldn’t it make more sense to count it as two 18 hole matches but you only get one bonus point for the home and home aspect? So the minimum points for each player are three for two matches, and then bonuses from there based on location and ties or wins.

It seems strange to have some matches that are 18 holes and others that are 36 holes.

Alright, I’m willing to hear thoughts and opinions on this one so we can settle it because if we are doing two 18 hole matches and there are full points available for both of the 18 hole matches then I feel like the bonus point should be off the table.

I believe the thought process was to allow home and home matches specifically to allow people to play the same person twice under a single match that counts toward the 3-10 rule. Hence the bonus point as an incentive to increase your PPM.

If there aren’t bonuses for doing two home and home matches, then there’s really no reason to do them at all. I think you should keep the bonus and add a rule with a max of 1 home and home per pair of refugees.

That abides by the TC rule and will help reduce abuse of the bonus points system while still giving a good benefit to schedule these kind of outings, especially with others around the state!

@golf4miami do we just report our results here? Thanks as always for your willingness to lead this. Your victory last week was definitely the result of good karma.

The way I see it and read it was the bonus for doing the home and home was the bonus point.

It guarantees you two points even if you lose the match and gets you 4 points if you win the match.

A draw in a home and home would get both people 3 points which would be the same as playing a regular 18 hole match and winning.

That’s with how we have it set up now at least.

Absolutely you can report them here for now. I think @PersistentlyOverPar may be working on a Google forms to fill out so we can grab results that way as well, but I think it’d be ideal for everyone to share their matches here for the fun of it. It’s always more fun to see how matches are going!

Got it. I understood it as one total bonus point for doing the home and home, not one bonus point per match in the home and home.

So the minimum points in a home and home would be 3 total points (1 for playing each match and losing, 1 bonus for home and home), or 1.5 PPM versus 1 PPM for a local match you lose without home and home.

That might be enough incentive to encourage home and home participation, while not being too much for potential abuse of the scoring system.

I think we are still missing each other here.

A home and home only counts as a single match. So, a loss is still 1 point for the match and 1 point for the home and home bonus. Giving you 2 PPM for that home and home series.

I’ll be excited to get going in whatever format you guys come up with, but my two cents is that simplicity is your friend.

Too many variables will drive people away, imo the easier it is to follow the more inclined people will be to play.

I’m starting to wonder if a simpler: “each match is it’s own thing, you can only play the same person twice” would be better for that reason.

We were just trying to create incentives for travel and playing more people but it sounds like we may have over done it?

But why would it count as one match if we’re playing two 18 hole rounds? As we said before, it doesn’t make sense to have standard matches be 18 holes, then home and homes be one 36 hole match.

Having a home and home as two 18 hole matches where each participant gets one bonus point for doing a home and home seems like a nice middle ground between the two options you’re discussing (one 36 hole match or two 18s with bonuses for each)… but I defer to whatever leadership decides.

I agree with @Creags in keeping it as simple as possible. If a bonus point for home and home dilutes that, keep each match as its own thing.
