Been debating signing up, and it looks like I’m the only person in or near the northwest?
Got a payment via Venmo last night for this, but I cannot seem to pair it up with a name on the sign up sheet. If it was you and you want to stay anonymous feel free to DM me. Just want to make sure I’ve got everyone who has paid marked correctly. Thanks!
@Conley76 - Yeah I’m seeing the same thing. The usual suspects from that area of the state haven’t signed up this year.
Hey everyone. I started to look over the sheet. Like @Conley76 said, there doesn’t seem to be a NW contingent this year. Like every year, we are very I-71 adjacent (do SE OH golfers exist here). With that in mind, if there are any volunteers from the big three cities that are willing to travel more, please let me know. We are going to try to build this bracket with minimal travel in mind, but there are going to have to be a few people that travel to make the bracket work.
The other thing we should probably all come to an agreement on before the start is how we are going to deal with the final match. In the event the winner of the losers bracket wins the final match, what should we do to effectively break the one loss tie between the final two?
- 18 hole playoff
- 9 hole playoff
- 3 hole playoff
- Sudden death playoff
- Chip-off
- Decided by finals competitors
I am completely in on the finalists having zero say on how this ends.
The biggest concern I have is the potential logistics of have to play a second 18, but a chip off for the finals sounds gross.
Has @jack67 signed up to defend his crown yet?
I’ve somehow missed this for 3 months. Call me a boomer.
Let’s do this.
Also @golf4miami, let me know shipment of the trophy. I want my name stamped on this bad boy.
Hell yes! Glad to see you’re back into it.
As for the engraving. Reach out to @flanwilder and he can set you up. He’s who did the first two names on there. If there is a cost, I’ll re-imburse you.
Welcome aboard! I’m unfortunately out on match play—traveling outside of NEO to play this season is going to tricky bc of family stuff. But we have a good group of NEO guis that play on the regular. Make sure to post in the main OH thread if you’re interested!
Alright everyone, the weather is starting to get too nice to not get the ball rolling on this. We are going to set the registration cut off at 9PM on Friday (3/14). Any volunteers to travel a little more in the early rounds would be greatly appreciated.
This weekend, we will be putting the brackets together to be announced Sunday or early next week.
As far as the handicap debate, @golf4miami and I are going to do a little research and come to a decision.
Happy to help with research: https://www.usga.org/content/usga/home-page/handicapping/roh/Content/rules/Appendix%20C%20Handicap%20Allowances.htm
Alright everyone. I ran through the brackets for the 2023 and 2024 Matchplay. I used handicaps from 2023 because it was the most accurate number I could reasonably gather (we did not document handicaps in 2024). All of these matches were nominally played at a 100% handicap (with the exception of any individual matches that may have negotiated a variance).
I was able to estimate a differential for 57/61 matches. For every match, I binned the differential into four buckets. I then totaled up the number of wins by the lower handicap vs the higher handicap.
Difference in Handicap | Lower Handicap | Higher Handicap |
---|---|---|
0-5 | 8 | 16 |
5-10 | 11 | 9 |
10-15 | 4 | 4 |
15+ | 3 | 2 |
These numbers for our own matches play out well within the USGA guidelines. Based on our limited sample set, you are much more likely to lose to someone you are giving 2 pops than someone you are giving 20.
To quote the USGA
Based on the analysis of internal and external data sources, as a member of the non-elected, fake rules committee, I recommend the use of 100% handicaps until thorough statistical analysis refutes the current findings.
No cost - just come find me
I will volunteer to travel if you need somebody from the Dayton area.
About ten hours left until the Matchplay signup closes. I would encourage everyone that is already signed up to do a quick double check of your info since the bracket will be geographically assigned.
Doing some initial timelines in an attempt to get the matchplay complete in time for the RCC, and I don’t think it is reasonable. These would be super tight and likely not work for many people. Do we want to have a set number of rounds done?
Thoughts?
Round | Deadline |
---|---|
Winner Round 1 | April 13th |
Winner Round 2/ Loser Round 1 | April 27th |
Loser Round 2 | May 11th |
Winner Round 3/Loser Round 3 | May 26th |
Loser Round 4 | June 4th |
Winner Round 4/Loser Round 5 | June 15th |
Loser Round 6 | June 25th |
Winner Round 5/ Loser Round 7 | July 6th |
Loser Round 8 | July 20th |
Finals | August 3rd |
I think it’s doable, but it seems like weekends are best for most people, and if we get a weather washout at any point we may be boned. I think trying to get a winner by regional roost final is a stretch.
Pairings and Bracket are made. The matchup drops will begin at 6:00.
I think we should at least try to make it work. Worst case, it gets pushed a little. On the plus side this year, it will be very easy to tell who you should play next, so there is no reason you can’t get ahead if you have the chance.
Also, if anyone’s match lines up with an event, let @golf4miami or me know and we can help facilitate a pairing.
