NLU ST ANDREWS INV. (Keep. DMK’s. Name. Out. Your Fu*kin Mouth!)

@Tron I’d be interested in getting involved in this. I’m based over in the north of England (Liverpool) so would be very interested in understanding a more detailed breakdown of itinerary if/when available. buying a house with the other half so have to smart about how I plan and broach this with her

Wait until the second bottle of wine and turn on the Bachelorette (or Love Island since you’re in the UK)… it’s an undefeated combination

would rather gouge my eyes out with a spoon watch that stuff  we’re currently in national lockdown so nothing much better to do i suppose

My $100 rain suit is not worth a shit. My last two rounds were played in 50 deg and heavy rain and I got soaked. The Scotland NLU 2020 had a vigorous rain gear debate, so who spent the bucks on rain gear and used it in the rain? I need some guidance on how to spend my money and maybe we can bump this thread back to life.

I am not on the Scotland trip but I did just buy rain gear recently for the Donnybrook trip. I went with footjoy jacket and pants and played southern pines and mid pines in the pouring pouring rain and stayed dry! Set me back about $250 for the set but figured it’ll last me for a long time.

Just played a round this morning at Mid Pines in steady rain.

My new Galway Bay pants (caught them on a deal for $30) were great and kept me dry. The Lands End rain jacket I wore didn’t keep me quite as dry (and it’s still soaking wet).

Footjoy Rain Gloves are the best thing Footjoy makes.

The zip off pants can still be had for $30

Columbia also makes good, solid rain gear (Pacific Northwest tested).

I dig the price but the size will be a challenge :joy:

Well damn. They do have one of their jackets on sale for $130.

I’d also reach out to Linksoul about their gear. I’ve read mixed reviews on their rain gear. Maybe they will do something for you.

Even though I left the chat this week, I’m glad I can still find some good rain pants content.

My problem with rain pants are the pockets. They let water in and you get soaked. Do they make rain pants with zippered pockets to keep the water out.

The best rain pant I’ve ever had is from FJ. On year 3 or 4 and keeps me dry and the wind off of me. I wear them all winter long too. Sun Mountain is my top of choice as well.

Can’t wait for the glorious April weather in Scotland so there is no rain gear required!

Fingers crossed…

I’m looking forward to glorious April weather in St Andrews. December in SE North Carolina is wet and chilly this year.

I play in some pretty apocalyptic weather. Galvin Green jackets and pants are comfortable, durable, and they will keep you dry. The designs are weird, and they are expensive, but last a lifetime.

I have two pairs of FJ rain pants and one FJ rain jacket. They are about 8 years old and still keep me just as dry as the day I got them. There are cheaper options out there, but I really don’t know if there is a better option that combines performance and longevity.

Thanks to all for the advice. I just pulled the trigger on Galway Bay rain jacket and unlined rain pants. Did the combo purchase and saved some coin. Bring on the weather.

The weather we would have had this year!

Rain gear is a constant dialogue, especially in GB&I. Obviously we have to play in it a lot. Some people swear on good, expensive gear. Some people just get cheap crap and use it in emergencies.

Here are a couple of truths:

  1. You have to pay for genuinely good gear. Galvin Green is the only thing that really works. But they cost a fortune.

  2. You mostly don’t need ‘genuinely good gear’. A shower will usually pass. Drizzle is manageable in most modern golf clothing. An umbrella will usually get you through. It’s actually rare that it rains so hard you feel the benefit of GG gear.

  3. On the occasions when the rain gets Biblical, there is almost always nothing you can do. Sometimes you just have to accept you’re fucked and take it with a smile. You can warm up later.

  4. What often makes the difference are the little things. The best Galvin Green gear around won’t mean anything if the rain is running down your neck and down your back, which happens A LOT! A wide brimmed waterproof hat is the only thing that helps with that.

  5. Rain gloves are a fucking game changer and way more important for your game than what you wear. Wet pants doesn’t affect your swing. The club slipping will ruin it. MacWet are the nuts for rain. I can not recommend them highly enough so spend effort getting those.

  6. On a week long trip the bigger issue is changes of clothes. Lots of layers. Lots of choices. Sometimes you’ll get wet. Just have enough to go home and change into.

  7. The wind will fuck you up way more than the rain. You can’t buy clothing to fix that.
