Golf season is underway (almost) everywhere, and this season, No Laying Up is bringing you a chance to compete for bragging rights and prizes with virtual golf competitions in The Ring.
The Ring is a golf community we have set up with our friends at Unknown Golf. What is Unknown Golf? They are the golf social app that does it all: playing, planning, and organizing your golf games, whether running a multi-round tournament for a club, or just getting together for your normal weekend round.
Each month, we will host a new contest in The Ring community. In May, we’ll be tracking gross and net birdies. Whoever racks up the most during the month will win bragging rights. If you’re in first and a Nest Member, you’ll also get a prize from the NLU prize closet.
As we progress, we will add some Roost vs. Roost competitions (fuel for Roost Smack Talk) and may explore some of the more advanced stat tracking that uses Unknown+ (the paid version). For now, all you need to participate in these competitions is the free Unknown Golf app/website access, a valid GHIN #, and an NLU/Refuge account (which you have if you are reading this on the Message Board).
Learn more about how to #getinvolved in the Ring at the link below.
To count for The Ring, rounds must be posted to GHIN via Unknown Golf, as their software tabulates the standings/results. We are not building a Google sheet or other place to tabulate the stats. Unknown Golf partners with us and the NLU Roosts to run scoring for Roost events and we are partnering with them on these virtual competitions too.
Only scores posted all the way through to GHIN from UKG will make it onto the leaderboard. If you know the round is going to affect your handicap index, there’s less of a chance that you are making stuff up to post to win something from the NLU prize closet.
You are not required to use UKG to do live scoring for The Ring - you can post your score through their app/site after the round if you use a different app to keep track of stats.
For example, I have Arccos. I can post to my GHIN from Arccos after a round. Instead of doing that, if I want to participate here in The Ring, I will use Arccos for my stat tracking during the round, but I will NOT hit the button to send the score from Arccos to GHIN. Instead, I’ll just log in to UKG on my phone after playing and set up the round/enter my scores there to post to GHIN to make sure it counts for The Ring.
Ditto for any other 3rd party app that can post to GHIN - you can turn off posting to GHIN on that app and then post to to UKG after the fact it you want to participate (as long as you have UKG posting to GHIN).
@ChickPhilA, can you please communicate the to UKG team that there’s about 6x as many steps to post a single round vs the GHIN app. That’s a bad design and a barrier to engagement.
Play, play now, single round, 1-5 players, fill out course info, start scoring, more stuff to confirm, at least 2 clicks 18 times to enter each hole, round complete, sign scorecard. Way too onerous.
