Surprisingly broke my 20 minute PR on this one. Great playlist and great structure. Still very thankful for the more music option with certain instructors (sorry @EZmiss).
Have been lifting and riding outside more recently so missed a couple of these… but here is last week’s for accountability purposes. Very excited to hit the JK ride this week (because she is a top 3 instructor and all)
Just a FYI, I think he’s just on bottom of the instructor list, out of alphabetical order
I don’t know about all that, but I’m going to go out on a limb and guess your favorite template holes are of the alps and maiden varieties……
Haters and losers (of our Queen), of which there are SO FUCKING MANY. Keep spreading the good word @yungloudancolin
As golf season is starting to slow down, I’ve started to prep for officiating with dipping into longer rides. Really liked the last two I’ve done with Ally (adding it to the spreadsheet after convincing my wife to do it this morning) and Alex!
Kinda getting back into it after some tough love from Mrs. Oski about being out of shape. I know the climbs help you juice your output, but pretty proud of getting to 475 overall. Hit a wall around 25 mins, and then just kept going.
brief iphone update….
we made it. yesterday was a delight. today was a grind.
not quite 100miles, we coasted into town on fumes at the end. definitely could not have done it without all the work on the peloton and this group pushing me.
Now that I’m not on my phone at the train station, and had a nice 2hr train ride to decompress and think about things…the full debrief for anybody that cares.
I did not sleep great on the pullout in the hotel the first night, but we got rolling around 9am from Jefferson City. It was a couple miles from the hotel to the trail head, with everybody getting used to riding fully loaded up, trying to find a comfortable pace, and getting on with the day. We started out the first few miles riding at roughly 12-12.5mph.
at the trailhead
rode for about an hour comfortably, stopped for some coffee and some breakfast at a delightful little cafe, The Hitching Post in Hartsburg, catering to people riding the trail. After about a 30-45min stop, we were off again. Everybody was feeling good and we probably picked up the pace to more like 13-13.5mph.
Rode another quick 10miles, and pulled off at a cool campsite/restaurant/bar called Coopers Landing with great views of the Missouri River. Somebody even mentioned that they had live music the night before. We had a quick snack/drink, and were back rolling in about 10min.
Trail was flat, weather was great, we were fueled up and pushed the pace even more to 14+mph. This was the longest stretch of riding we had on the trip without stopping at 15+miles. Joe (guy in the green) challenged me to a race at about mile 30. I don’t think he was really trying his hardest and he was definitely carrying more weight than I was, but I got past him and we hit 24.7mph fully loaded. After that race was the first time I felt it in my quads a bit.
Stopped in Rocheport at the General Store & Cafe for lunch which was our best stop of the trip. We only had 15miles left for the day, and ordered a couple beers along with my spinach and artichoke pizza that I almost ate all of. Last 15miles were uneventful, but we ended up going faster yet again, riding the last chunk at probably close to 15mph. Every stop we made we came out the other side stronger. Our smooth running trip was about to go sideways.
Hit our campsite right at mile 50 for the day, were rolling for right at 4hrs, and avg’d 13mph even with all the stops and putzing around. 2800+ calories burned.
However, New Franklin was 5miles from the next town, no restaurants, cafes, or grocers were open, all we had access to was a Casey’s and we didn’t want to head on to Boonville just to double back. Instead, Ramen, chips & salsa, and smores ended up being our dinner. My appetizer was two ibuprofen and a multi vitamin washed down with Busch Light. Joe ate his ramen with actual sticks off the ground.
No major physical issues at the end of the day. My new shoes would make my foot fall asleep after about 45min, but it wasn’t really bothering me. The worst of it was my left hand would fall asleep and I wouldn’t notice it until I got off the bike. It was still a little tingly when we went to sleep.
This morning came early, and I might’ve slept about 3hrs. I don’t camp well. We had 40miles to go and a train to catch at 1150 so our alarms went off at 6am and we started packing up in the dark. We were off at 7am…in the dark. We really didn’t need that last 6pack of 16oz beers, and were paying for it from the start. Pace was slow, barely 13mph, the riding was tougher.
Wind was blowing and forecasted to have gusts to 45mph. Even the first 10miles we were dropping pace down to like 12mph and you could sense the collective concern that this was not going to be like yesterday. The scenery wasn’t as good, there were no services available, and we hadn’t even had coffee. At our first stop Josh checked the GPS and we’d already climbed 300ft in the first ~10mph…somewhat explaining our lack of pace. It felt like we were ALWAYS climbing, and we kind of were. Big, long, 10+ minute gradual climbs really tests you. 15 miles into the day we stopped in Pilot Grove looking for coffee, and some relief. We were afforded neither.
We kept climbing for another 5-10miles before it seemed like things started to level out. But we were the only ones out there, we saw ZERO other cyclists going our direction, and barely anybody going east back down hill. The trail was less compact, with bigger aggregate, and littered with big sticks from the wind and a mine field of walnuts that would really kick you sideways when you hit them. The couple downhills we did find we were only reaching about 18mph, and my skinny tired bike got very unsettled on that surface over about 17mph.
But we pushed on.
Nothing else to say here other than it was just a flat out grind. It’s like when you’ve got 5min left in one of the Peloton rides and your legs feel like telephone poles…but instead of 5min, we had 3hrs ahead of us. We didn’t stop for more than 10min anywhere, and never left the trail.
We were all counting down the miles, and we finally reached the outskirts of Sedalia. We hadn’t had any real food yet, I had reached the bottom of my 2nd water bottle, were all pretty spent, but had only ~3-4 miles left to the train station.
Got to the train station about 1045, with a total ride time of 7hrs 30min (pic was after a subway run .5mile down the road, and 93 miles. Translation, we had a total idle time of about 15min in 40 miles. Yesterday we felt victorious, today we just felt relief. But we made it.
I drank 4 more 28oz bottles of water by the time I got home.
Discussions are being had about the next trip, and if we could do the whole thing (~240miles). I definitely need some rest and better food, so we’d need to plan our stops better, and I can’t do another night of camping with little sleep. We definitely packed too much, as I’m pretty sure we more than doubled the weight of the bikes.
I think we could do it, but some more training, and better planning will be needed.
Good for you!
This makes me crave a refuge bikepacking golf trip.
I can’t even imagine the rig that would be needed to carry that much gear.
Edit; we didn’t plan this trip out very well. that was legitimately about the toughest stretch of the trail we could have possibly picked for 1 day. I think we were climbing for 700+ft according to the GPS inclusive of going back down, with over 300ft total climb for the day, and 180ft climb in the last dozen miles to finish!
The social medias are telling me that Peloton German instructor Charlotte is about to start offering English language classes.
I am pumped.
If you want Emma with Kendall’s rock preferences and a smidge of Denis goofy—-Charlotte is your gal. I predict she will be v. popular with this group.
Also worth noting you can take classes in German or Spanish and just put subtitles on. I’ve done that and keep the subtitles on always now as sometimes the instructors speak too fast and I miss some cues, etc
Well friends, I completely forgot about updating the ride this week. Any objections to just leaving this one up for another few days and having a fresh ride on Monday? Perhaps a Halloween ride if they do something like that?
