I doubt it takes more than 3-4 hours unless there are some insane hills or it is constant climbs. That’s just a rough guess, but considering you just averaged 26 mph, I figure that even with an absolute worst case of half that, still gets you done under 4. I’m assuming your buddies are also skilled/trained cyclists?
Eh, one of them I have confidence is in good shape, one of them is a wildcard, and if the fourth comes he’s a former CC runner, but you’d never believe it with his current silhouette. Crushed limestone surface, and a little concerned my bike isn’t suited to that. I’m definitely not a skilled real world rider, and even though I may be in better shape than some, it might be tough to keep up when they have the right setups. I want to get the bike out this weekend and see how I do after walking 18, and if I can make it say 10-20miles. That’ll be a better indicator than peloton output I think.
I averaged 26mph inside, with a fan on me, carrying nothing, on a fat padded seat…IF that 26mph is even accurate.
Gotcha. It sounds like if nothing else, your legs should be in as good of or better shape than theirs, so that’s a huge bonus. I doubt that there is anyway to get around soreness the second day and it could just turn into a war of attrition there. Walking 18 followed by a 20 mile bike should definitely be a good test of your legs though. Once again, I haven’t rode outside since I sold my bike 3-4 years ago, so I may not be the greatest source of info here.
Took the weekly ride to celebrate number 250! Enjoyed this class just as much the second time around!
With @tnord and @Douger23 bringing their usual insane stats to the thread in the last day or so I figured others may be interested to read a blip about Filippo Ganna setting the world record for longest distance cycled in one hour (which is, apparently, a 'thing):
35+ Miles in an hour around a track, WHOA. Would be interested to know what that wattage looks like.
I hadn’t seen this mentioned and wasn’t sure where else to put it. I haven’t dug into all the details but I enjoyed his strength classes. Weird seeing him scrubbed from the program completely. Would be interested in knowing what went on there.
Being in shape for 30min Peloton ride is very different than being in shape for a 50-mile bike ride on a gravel trail with a hybrid bike while hauling gear. You should be fine, but just be prepared for being in the saddle for that long.
Checked the map for the first day and it looks like it’s just shy of 1,500 feet of climbing, so not terrible.
I absolutely expect it to be significantly tougher. But I also think the conditioning has to transfer over at least a little. I bumped up to 45min last night, and with 5 min warm up/cool down that’s almost an hour straight on the bike. I’m guessing that’s about as long as we’ll go between stops? One of the other guys said they planned for a 10mph pace and 5hrs on the bike each day. I don’t know if I can really prepare much seeing as we leave a week from tomorrow and I can’t wear myself out right before.
On the bike again tonight for 20min low impact and core work. Another 45min tomorrow, golf and 10-20miles on the actual bile this weekend, maybe take monday off, 45min tues/thurs, 20min low impact/core wed is my plan?
Bought my train tickets today….so it’s happening.
The 10mph pace will help a lot. That’s relatively slow. Probably wouldn’t hurt to do some endurance rides focusing on zones 2 and 3.
hitting the right zone will be tough since I haven’t done one of the PZ tests, but maybe going easier for longer is a better idea than working on cardio/strength the last few workouts.
I need some gear too, 40s morning/night and 60s during the day. not really sure how to dress for this?
A nice base layer would be good with a shirt and shorts over the top. Someone I know actually started the Katy Trail yesterday. He posted some pics and wore bib shorts with leg warmers, long sleeve base layer, and a cycling jersey.
I think the bike situation is mostly figured out now after a trip to the shop. My frame doesn’t support racks, so they’re ordering me the biggest frame bag that will fit with double bottles. I’m also going to borrow a handlebar bag from my buddies, and if I still need more storage I’ll get one of the bigger saddle bags.
They said my tires may not be the best for traction around turns, but if it was them, they’d just run them. The shoe thing is a bit of a problem, the Lake brand that fit me the best, are like $300+. I tried on some shimano and they were too narrow, I need to do some shopping around.
I rode to the shop and back with a little extra meandering around mixed in and got to 10miles at least. First thing I’m noticing is my wrists are what’s getting sore. Any thoughts about what to do there are welcome.
For the shoes, could you possibly put new cleats on your peloton shoes?
good question, didn’t really think of that.
Can’t really speak to the wrist situation. Could just be a matter of the angle and how you are gripping the handlebars. Might want to do some research on most comfortable hand position for a flat bar.
Did you say you have flat pedals on the bike? Are you going to get new pedals that you can clip into?
It’ll depend on the type of cleats your pedals take. You may be able to get an adapter for the peloton shoes though.
I have some convert-able or hybrid pedals that are flat on one side then accept cleats on the other.
the other two are telling me I’m acting like I’m getting ready to climb Everest. which…fair.
That’s what I had on my bike. They probably have speed clips on the bottom. Unfortunately, I don’t think the peloton shoes are set up for those.
Peloton uses Look Delta cleats, which are basically proprietary to Peloton now since Look doesn’t make Delta pedals anymore.
Apologies for the late update this morning, the day got away from me a bit. Anyway, thanks to @yungloudancolin for the nomination of Jess’s 20 Min Hip Hop Ride from 5/28/22. @ChickPhilA please update when you can.
As always shoutout @EZmiss anytime the
