NLU Ladies

I told Randy we should lock this in for a 2022 event. What could we name it?? Hummm

This news got me thinking more about women and golf and why the sport is the way it is. Never realized there’s an urban legend that the word golf comes from “gentlemen only, ladies forbidden”.

Upon researching courses build by female lead architects (#getinvolved), I found this excellent article about women golf course architects. The second half of the article is so good and very in-line with what my experience has been like as a woman in golf.

Thanks for sharing! This is a topic I’ve kept coming back to

Edit: I still think there’s further to the story in regards to what the lack of female architects means for female players. If I ever meet a golf course architecture, the first question I want to ask is “what yardage do you think a typical women player would get with Driver plus 7 iron” I bet the answers would be fascinating.

This paragraph connected with me

“People often choose to pursue careers in the golf industry because they have cultivated a love of the game, and that likely evolves from playing. And for a variety of reasons, some listed above, women and girls do not play golf at the same rate as their gender counterparts. Therefore, until we vastly increase the participation rates of women and girls, the professional gender equity will remain imbalanced. If we continue to perpetuate a top-down approach, golf will always be governed by men. We must consider grassroots intervention, and affirmative action to place women in positions to disrupt a system so entrenched as golf. Golf will be better for it.”

This research from the National Golf Foundation is interesting and encouraging. Go, girls!

I’m curious, what do you think the answer is? I’d guess 250 yards but I have very little experience playing with women. None of my wife, daughters, sisters, mother, or friends play golf.

Yah. 250 ish. Obviously outliers but for pretty typical game about that

Could you break that down? What’s your average drive and your average 7 iron? I don’t know what to tell my wife for numbers because I have no idea what an average would be.

Here are my ranges… go east on me I’m still learning

So is she! That’s why I’m asking. She constantly asks me what she should hit and I have no clue.

I feel that 4H!

@Darikashi I’ve had driver 7 iron for a 300-320 yrd holes (but also today had it for a 240yrd hole!)

My guestamate above was based in about 150 for driver and about 100 for 7 iron

I don’t know typical women golfers, but for my wife, that’s 330. 190 with the driver and 140 with 7i.

@Sarah that 4h is a menace. But to be fair my sample size is low. I think if I learned how to use it could be good for my game. I just got the 3w and love it but need to practice it more.

When you’re connecting it looks like you’re crushing it throughout the bag though! My go to 4h seems to be a cold top…

That’s pretty mashing it. Lots of women I see play are hitting woods from 140

This data is really interesting. Does the system separate out chips/pitches from other shots with those clubs, or is it all lumped together?

She careered it today. 88 from the senior tees (around 5600) for a 15.6 differential. I… stayed out of her way.

That’s pretty stout! Great score!!

No, it doesn’t know what’s a pitch and what is a chip. Each club has sensor on it and it records a shot then uses GPS to measure the distance to where you take your next shot from. Very clever system and now that I have so many rounds logged it’ll tell me what to hit for my next shot. It tells me stokes gained (lost in my case) on drive, approach, putts so I know where I need to improve. Randy would be proud of me – I have allllll the data.

It’s called Arccos Caddie and I highly recommend it.

Just popping in to wish all of the NLU Ladies that are Mom’s a very Happy Mother’s Day!
