NLU Club Championship - Sept 17th and 18th

it was nice to see what 8 and 11 where suppose to look like … both holes were not pretty for me…

Personally, I think it’s about time we had an NLU competition on camera where no strokes are given. I understand why some people are wanting strokes, but like you noted, basically every other competition NLU puts on camera there are strokes involved. The Club Championship should 100% be a no strokes event.

I liked having it non-handicapped as I was legitimately curious whether DJ or, to a lesser extent, Randy could steal a spot on a combination of lightning in a bottle day + low cap imploding, but (with truly all due respect as someone who’s had their teeth kicked in at events I had no chance of winning) it also felt almost punitive/pointless having KVV & Casey also tee off as equitable competitors

Having 4 different tee boxes but playing straight up would’ve helped to balance the fairness and added to the #content and interest for me (womens / high cap / mid cap / low cap)

Having an unhandicapped score is fine when there are so many NLU members around scratch, but why not have both a gross and net winner? Gross winner is the NLU Club Champion, net is the Popper of the Year or something else fun and silly.

+1 for this. I play my dad straight up all the time, but he plays from 1-2 in front of me and we always have great matches. I think it also likely makes the course play as the architect intended for each skill level (assuming some level of GCA competence)

Based on Casey’s yardages I’d be hitting hybrid into those par 3s. Not sure I’d get out of some of those bunkers after knocking hybrid in

doubling back to my follow up post - I’d also vote to have you playing a different tee box that better fits your yardages!

Casey played her own set of tees.

Watched like 5 minutes.

Just so far in on @ChickPhilA trousers. No notes perfection.

Because you and Casey are like 20 shots different…

When was the last time NLU put a competition on camera where no strokes were given and it wasn’t a straight up match because the players had basically the same handicap?

The + handicap wanted to play a straight-up gross event?

i think there should be a gross and first flight. Gross being whoever wants to play straight up with no handicaps and then first flight for those that want a handicapped event. I would assume it would be a pretty even split of contestants between flights and keep it fun for all involved.

I want to say Ben and Neil actually played straight up at Pinehurst, and I think Ben and Soly played straight up last year. Am I correct @sundaybag?

Net Scoring for Day 1:
Ben: Net 76
Soly: Net 79
Tron: Net 78
Cody: Net 76
Neil: Net 76
D.J.: Net 80
Randy: Net 80
KVV: Net 81
Casey: Net 90ish

Cody in. Soly out is the only change we would have seen.

Please see the second part of my post for relevant information.

whats the difference between a “straight up” match and a match between two competitors of equal hcp? If the strokes wash, isn’t it the same thing?

My point was I cannot remember a time where we’ve had everyone from NLU get together in a single place to do a full on stroke play competition where strokes were not given.

My 109 went down to 105! LOLOLOLOLOLOL

I did not have my best stuff that day, but still had some good holes and some great shots that didn’t make it in because, well, I was far out of the competition. I bested my score from there last year though so there’s that!

Define this. Ben is like a +2.5 and Neil is currently like a 2. Not sure what they were when it was filmed. But 4 shots is still a notable difference and if you were playing a match against someone and their index was 4 shots lower than yours, I’d bet you want shots.

This doesn’t mean that we can’t have a straight up, no strokes competition, but maybe include a net portion along with it, or have flights for the different index groups.
