Slightly off topic. Bummed I had limited nominations for the bracket
This is a good tune, but the solo part around 3:50 is next level shit.
Smashing Pumpkins in the Gish and Siamese Dream era were amazing. Mellon Collie was too indulgent of Billy Corgan IMO (kind of like Guns & Roses Use Your Illusion being too indulgent of Axl).
Iāll be 100% honest, Iām more of a āhits and a couple deeper cuts sprinkled inā Pumpkins guy, but Iāve heard that quite a bit. Itās honestly kind of remarkable how good some of it is, but then I try and dive in and I hit some of that indulgence. Hahahaha. Iāve just never given a full album a spin and thought I needed to do it again. But god damn did they write some tunes.
Siamese Dream was excellent from beginning to end, especially if you like guitar solos (I do). It came out in the fall of my senior year of High school, and I listened to the hell out of it.
We tried to get Geek USA as the prom theme. Lost that battle, but the effort was good.
Mayonaise is the Pumpkins best song and no one will ever convince me otherwise.
Are we just pretending like 1979 doesnāt exist?!
Mayonnaise is so good. 1979 is a great song, but Mayonnaise is better IMO
Bury Your Head is such a fucking jam. God, I love that song.
Early 00s emo/screamo/pop punk!
My favorite album from my favorite band from the era:
And hereās a tasting menu of some others that made me feel feelings ā
The Juliana Theory, wow, I used to listen to them so much back then. They have some really interesting songs. Such a unique sound. Good call.
This is an awful take. A truly awful take. Cake is awesome.
I think Drown is their best song, but it has an asterisk for being released on the Singles soundtrack. Mayonaise is my 2nd favorite.
Cakeās music is whatever. 90s filler. Some catchy, but so is āLumpā by Presidents of the USA.
Cakeās attempt at ālook at how above it we areā lyrics are pretentious wanking given the music landscape of today.
And I was deep into the Silver Bullets when I wrote that earlier post. But I stand behind every word.
Youāre killing me, I like POTUSA too! I like both because they stuck with their unique style and carved out a niche for themselves in 90ās music and somehow they got half-ass popular for awhile. Both are an acquired taste for sure, but I enjoy both immensely.
I saw Cake open for Mumford & Sons during Mumfordās first US tour and let me tell you, I donāt know that Iāve seen a band more visibly pissed/annoyed that they were a) opening and b) opening for these British wankers. Their energy was mucho not great. I do enjoy several of their songs though.
I saw the Pixies on one of their last shows with Kim Deal and you could tell they all kinda hated one another.
Came on, no between band banter, no crowd banter. Just plowed through their songs and left. Lights came on, shows over.
Still kicked ass cuz hey, the Pixies.
On Cakeā¦this verse was the one that just sent me over the edge. Irrational. Sure. Too deep into the Rocky Mountain Kool-Aid? Maybe.
Now tickets to concerts and drinking at clubs
Sometimes for music that you havenāt even heard of.
And how much did you pay for your rockānāroll t shirt
That proves you were there
I literally shouted at my brother āI BET THEYāD LOVE A TSHIRT SALE NOW!ā
Now, I know what the song goes on to really say, but that line pushed me over the edge that night.
