Music Suggestions 2 - driving fast in my car

The album of my third year of university. I’m going to need to give this a (digital) spin this weekend.

Another of my all-time favourites.

Everyone in my circle was listening to Licensed to Ill when it came out. FIGHT FOR YOUR RIGHT! WOOO!

By the time Pauls Boutique came out they had all moved on to other stuff and I was the only one singing its praises. Sort of on an island as my friends rolled into listening to hair metal and butt rock. I think that’s why it means more to me than License.

Let me get a less insane day and I’ll get you your list.

Down to 25. It’s progress, believe it or not.

Paul’s Boutique is unbelievable. I was only 11 when it came out but later on, I kept going back to that album.

I’ll give this a shot.

I’m currently 22 so most of this is in the 2010’s, or like 3-5 years ago. I’m young as fuck. Still go back to all of these consistently.

Bon Iver- 22-A Million
Bon Iver- For Emma, Forever Ago
The Black Keys- Brothers
Kanye West- Yeezus
Anderson .Paak- Malibu
Frank Ocean- Blonde
James Blake- Assume Form
Caamp- Caamp
Childish Gambino- “Awaken, My Love!”
Tyler, The Creator- Flower Boy

Bonus: Used to love Mumford and Sons when I was about 12-13, can’t seem to get into them at all anymore though.

This is super interesting to me.

10 years ago right around this time I was in my college apparent watching Tyler the Creator sit on stool with a cockroach crawling on him.

If you don’t mind me asking, what about it is interesting? I truly mean this in a good way, like I’m genuinely curious on your thoughts.

I love Tyler. I contemplated putting down IGOR but then realized I was 20 when that came out. Still listen to that consistently as well.

People grow over time. Musical artists grow over time.

OF/Tyler the Creator/Mellow Hype was just starting to get a little bit of attention when I was 20-21. The music he was making then/his artistic image compared to what it was/is when you were 18-22 is different. With that being said, I think it’s cool that his music spans that stretch of time. That can’t be said for a lot of artists.

Idk if I’m articulating myself well enough here but I’m trying.

Goblin to IGOR is pretty wild

You are, and I love that thought.

I remember when I was in middle school and people were wearing OF and GOLF WANG stuff all the time. People who wore that stuff were kind of seen as outsiders, troublemakers in a way, at least where I was from. Now he’s a lot more mainstream. His musical journey is insane to me. I couldn’t even listen to his older stuff, couldn’t stand it. Other people ate it up like crazy, and I never understood why. And then of course it clicks and now he’s made a couple of my favorite albums.

Pretty much exactly what I was thinking but just a shorter version of what I was trying to say lol.

I think a part of the appeal at that stage was that it was just so raw and in your face. He literally didn’t give an F about what he said, and when you’re young that feels kind of like freedom.

I am really glad you posted, it made me realize how certain artists can be pictured as one thing based on a time frame.

To me, when I hear/see Tyler the Creator I think “Goblin”, when I hear/see Childish Gambino, I think “Camp”.

Other examples I think of, back in 2013-2015 I was an assistant coach for a AAA team. The kids I coached graduated HS in 2016.

They would talk about Logic, to me Logic was “Young Sinatra” or Hoodie Allen was “Pep Rally”

Where as the albums or mixtapes you/they might associate are different if that makes sense

Yeah for sure, I guess I accidentally brought in a different perspective than all you old farts!
I’m sure when people think of Kanye’s albums the first one they think of is College Dropout, or maybe even MBDTF given its popularity. For me it’s always been Yeezus or Life of Pablo.

I wasn’t expecting to get this deep but now you’ve got me thinking about life man lol.

Alright @Battisstatus here goes nothing. These are in no particular order, more just a “as I remember those years”.

Blink182 - Enema of the State
Eminem - Marshal Mathers LP
Atmosphere - God Loves Ugly
Incubus - Morning View
Lamb of God - Ashes of the Wake
Jeezy - The Recession
Panic! At The Disco - A Fever You Can’t Sweat Out
Evans Blue - The Melody and the Energetic Nature of Volume
Zion I - Mind Over Matter
Aesop Rock - Labor Days

Actually have tattoos of lyrics from each of those last 2 albums.

In no particular order

OutKast - Aquemini
Lynyrd Skynyrd - Greatest Hits
St Lunatics - Free City
50 Cent - Get Rich or Die Trying
Guns & Roses - Appetite for Destruction
Master P - Ghetto Dope
Mase - Harlem World
TI - Urban Legend
Tribe Called Quest - The Love Movement

This was hard, as I couldn’t think of a 10th. I was more a single song guy than full albums. For me, I really enjoy music but it would be a stretch to say it shaped me.
