A pretty accurate course flyover video.
I forgot to mention the tee markers will also be for sale with proceeds going to Max.
Get your ass over. Then you can help me convince Mrs. Gafflin that going to the YOTB event is a truly once in a lifetime event I should not miss.
If I get the vaccination email any time soon, this will be the first thing proposed. It was a hard no, but she’ll be vaccinated by then for sure, most of our family already is or will be. There’s a chance
I don’t think I’m going to be able to help with that one, but I will try. Hahahaha.
Sir, It’s going to be ok. (I have the logos and the fire is stoked, another bun is in the oven, and other corny cliches to assure you the new cooler logos will indeed be used.)
- White tees (515 par 5)
- White tees (315 par 4) - played from the silver tees this would be reachable for some and would be the best short par 4 option on the course because the green can be really tough to hold if you are hitting from anywhere but the fairway
- Blue tees (376 par 4) the strategy of the hole is nice from the blues - if you hit it right you have a really long approach, and if you try to cut the corner but come up short/hit a tree then you have almost no shot to the green even if you do hit a good tee shot but you aren’t far enough or a bit to far left on the fairway you are still boxed out by a huge tree on the corner of the dog leg
- Silver tees (300 yard par 4) it might be reachable if played from the silver tees but then the hole isn’t very interesting because unlike the 2nd, the green is fairly large and easy to approach from anywhere. playing as far back as possible is definitely the way to go here
- Blue tees (166 par 3)
- White tees (311 par 4) - this is another reachable par 4 for some but again, like the 2nd it has a tricky green that will be difficult to hold, especially if you go long or right…i think blues are whites are good here!
- Blue tees (507 par 5) - playing this from the silver tees (439) might be really fun. even if you bomb it and have a shortish distance to the green, it is not an easy hole inside 100 yards. miss left and you’re dead, miss long and you have a tricky pitch to a green that runs away from you, miss right and you have to hit it over a bunker on a downslope most likely…
- Blue tees (185 par 3) - this hole from the blue tees is HARD, left is dead and almost a guaranteed bogey or worse
- Blue tees (420 par 4)
- White tees (442 par 4)
- White tees (418 par 4)
- Blue tees (348 par 4)
- White tees (204 par 3) I would move this up to silver because of 16
- White tees (511 par 5) probably doesn’t make too much of a difference but I think play this from the blues
- Blue tees (387 par 4) very hard par 4 from the blue tee box if you hit driver you have to hit it right to left or you have no hope of staying in the fairway. If you hit an wood or an iron, you have a long shot to the green where once again, left is dead. any other tee box you take this element out because i think they have the whites off to the right with a better angle
- Silver tees (180 par 3) playing this from the blues is a must I think…such a great, intimidating par 3 when stretched out to 220, where if you hit the green it kind of makes the round, the approach shots if you miss aren’t too bad either.
- White tees (299 par 4) I would play this from the blues too…it’s really straightforward and really, really easy if played from 299. Not much penalty for going left, right, short, or long.
- Blue tees (448 par 4)
Here are some changes with the feedback incorporated. Feel very good about this.

Dude. Go get yourself a shot and get to Detroit!
Really great comments from @jawnnypage and @JDGAFFLIN. I took screenshots of the GPS view from the Grint to help with lines and added some other ideas/comments (long post warning).
- Spot on with the comments about the blues being the play here.
- Definitely can’t reach the green from the blues/whites because you’re blocked out from the trees that protect the 3rd fairway. You’d have to hit a sky-high banana ball to even think about it. The silver is interesting though. I’ve never played from there but I think there’s clearance to get over the trees and make it a drivable green. But jawnny is right, the green isn’t all that interesting.
- If you can request pin position, making it a short par 3 with a back left pin position Jesse mentioned would be fun. There’s some severe slopes and a pin on the bigger slope in the back could be interesting. Go long, you’re in big trouble. Hit the green but 50 feet away? 4 putts are in play.
- Definitely drivable for longer hitters, but if you fail to cut the dogleg, you can end up in the fairway, be in tree jail, or even lose a ball in the tall grass (usually late summer) around the bunker.
- I agree that the silvers should get some consideration. Here are the lines with a 250 yard drive from the silvers and blues (actual box is in between the primary tee box and #6 green, underneath a tree). This green is tough to hit with anything other than a wedge and there’s trouble on 3 sides of it.
- The real blue tee box is back and to the left of the main box. The blues are only occasionally back there but I love this shot. you have to hit through a narrow-ish corridor with some thin trees (I think the ones on the right are dead) and it really brings the bunkers on the left side into play. It’s longer, and VERY different than playing whites/blues from the primary tee box. If you don’t want to use this for everyone, it might be fun to have The Duel played from this box.
#15. Blue is definitely the tee to play. OB left is in play if you hook it (even though there’s probably another 20 years before you get to the fence and Zoo). Gotta keep it in the fairway to have a good approach into an elevated green with some tough bunkers. Photos for visual comparison.
#16. I’ve never hit this green.
#17. Interestingly enough, there’s another “hidden” back tee box but I’ve never seen it used. There are trees to the right than hang way out into the hitting corridor and until they drastically trim them, I think this box is basically unusable. However, they do maintain and cut it like a box so maybe that’s in the works for the future? If the back tee were used, it’d completely change the hole and make it MUCH harder than the #18 handicap. See photos below to compare the “hidden” back teebox and the primary one.
late to the party but @jawnnypage is spot on with the assessment of the back 9 par 3’s. 16 from the blues is SIIIICCCKKKKK. and its downhill.
Wow, awesome job! That overview on #7 is helpful because I forgot about the trees on the left and right that would be more in play if the tees were moved up to silver.
Also I could ask Karen about requesting pins unless someone has reached out already. I am up there all the time and have a great relationship with her through First Tee so I wouldn’t mind asking! It was mentioned here already, but I’ll reiterate that she is the best and is really doing all she can to make Rackham the best it can be!
@JBors in charge of course setup…what could go wrong?
At least this time I am taking feedback
Sneak peak of some of the putter covers we will have for sale/raffle. Winston Collection did a hell of a job on these imo.
Damn that logo really pops
It really does. I approved the artwork last week and they are sending it into production. I would think within 3 weeks I will physically have them in hand. I’ll shoot some pics and post them so everyone can see the items available.
Update:
We have been granted 2 NIT spots for Maxamania. The first spot will go to best individual net score, either low net stroke or highest stableford (tbd).
For the second NIT spot there had been talks in the past of a Royal Rumble (derby). Given the size of the field, I think we could send groups off 1 and 10 and have the final two remaining face off in a shootout?
I think me and Laz can go off in front of the groups so once people are eliminated they can catch up and watch the match or whatever.
I recently learned that Winston Collection is local to the Detroit area. Out of curiosity (and I have no idea how big the company is), has an invite been offered to any of the folks there to join the event?
