Loop The Dunes - A Casual 2025 Golf Stay and Play

All of a sudden I don’t feel so bad for some of the spots I put @Manhattan in during the ALT shot at Erin Hills.

Absolutely kicking myself for not making the trek up north to hang with you guys.

Pencil me in for next year!

Speaking of, there was a 10 round split discussion on The Loop vs Erin Hills. Myself and @Ultra-Kiger were very quick to say easily EH 7-3 (I think) but we could spend all day on The Loop. @St.rappeo72 made the very obvious point of “so why 7-3 EH if that’s the case” and we couldn’t think of a reason why and that’s all I’ve been thinking about the last 3 days, so please, someone else weigh in here.

This was a very good point and I must admit I still don’t have a good answer. I still haven’t ranked these three courses yet in my giant spreadsheet as I’m taking time to decompress and reflect.

It’s a deceptive question, because my takeaway was not that I loved playing the Loop, but I would need at least 5 rounds in each direction to fully appreciate the angles and mounding and how to best play the course. So if I had the opportunity to play the course more often, I would do so. But Erin Hills is a vastly superior course in every way and every round out there would be a delight.

To your point, even after playing the Loop a bunch, say like 6 times each way, I’m still going 8-2 Erin Hills, with the 2 being 1 in each direction. Erin is just so dang good.

From my basic simpleton perspective, getting to play famous courses is the juice.

Just the name Erin Hills, a US Open venue that most golfers know about, is enough to give that course the edge over the IYKYK semi-gimmicky Doak track. The Loop is fun and challenging and diabolical and unfair and silly at times; it’s also not very pretty, especially compared to Forest Dunes or Erin Hills. I’m superficial like that

The Loop’s cart path situation also leaves a certain golf cart evangelist wanting more.

I got stuck quite a few times and had to put my cart in reverse. Funny enough, it wasn’t near greens or tee boxes, it was near the weird scraggly areas.

I was literally ON the path and had to reverse

There were multiple paths, that sure as hell looked like cart paths, that would kill your cart and make you go in reverse. Maybe a couple “no carts” signs wouldve been helpful.

For the starters making a really big deal bout there being “absolutely no cart paths out there”, there sure were a lot of cart paths on the Loop.

Don’t forget about the stationed drink cart where you better not be making too much noise

Sorry for partying at a very respectful near-whisper.

I’m not sure if this is a complement or a dis, but I’m taking it as “you’re terribly impressed by my recovery shots”

Is there juice for another go? I wasn’t immediately planning to run it back, but if there’s sufficient interest I can probably help out… Lesson learned - it’s gonna be way more CIA this time though

I think I’m 7-3 or 6-4, having played the loop 5 or 6 times in both directions and EH once. EH shot value makes more sense throughout. You can learn some of the nuance of the Loop to do some really fun ground play, but there’s a few holes and greens that just never feel they make sense because of their duality

Now if cost is a factor, I might be 7-3 the other way. $195 peak rates walking with $99 replay? that’s prettay, prettay good

we got some shit weather. It’s got some good scenic views if you’re not so busy ducking your head back into your cart to avoid the rain…

Much like the “we’ll kick you straight outta here if we see you playing in a 5some or more” threats, I think there’s a lot more bark than bite among the staff (probably to prevent the bro-hites from completely going to town)

Jumping in from the clouds here, but based on a few comments about the staff, should I cross this off as a place to consider taking a 16 man ryder cup trip, that sometimes can be a little loud?

i would say it’s ok, i’ve gone with a group of 12 multiple times and it works great for us

assuming “a little loud” just means whooping it up and having fun, not being full barstool

Dude I’m gonna lie I was sooo tired for that alt shot portion. I still have nightmares from topping that tee ball on that par 4.

Also complete hot take, Erin Hills is the hardest course I’ve ever played and I have zero desire to go back.

Narrow it down!
