Heavyweights: Thicc Boys of the Refuge Unite!

I am doing well also. Down 15 pounds since December. Hit the stall period the last week and a half or so. I knew it would come eventually have done a good job of not getting frustrated and keeping a positive outlook on things.

Had started and stalled since the new year and then last week initiated a “biggest loser” competition with my BiL and nephew to keep it interesting. Down 5 lbs since then.

After stalling for a couple of weeks on 101kg, I’m down to 99kg / 218lbs. Keep it up lads.

Long time lurker, first time thicc boys poster.

I’ve always struggled with my weight. Graduated college in 2014 and stepped on a scale for the first time in 4 years to find, to my horror, that I weighed 278 lbs at 5’ 8’’. through about 12 months of obsessive focus I got down to 202 lbs, but was stuck there for about four months until I stopped really focusing on it. Basically lived between that 202 and 220 for the better part of the next six years.

After Christmas 2022 I had ballooned up to 240 so I knew I had to make a change. Did whole 30 in January for the first time and lost 22 pounds in a month by just eating meat, veggies, and fruit. I honestly didn’t think it was possible.

I feel like a learned a lot in January about why I choose the foods that I do. Also learned that maybe I don’t like drinking alcohol as much as I thought I did. Operating without the inflammation and being fully “clear” was awesome. - I’d love to hear if anyone on here had a similar experience regarding giving up alcohol?

Im here today to make a promise to myself and to you guis that this time around, I won’t stop at 202 lbs. It won’t be long before the scale reads 199.9 and im excited to share my success with you guis.

I’ve felt the same way about alcohol. I usually do dry January and then have a drink Feb 1st, but this year I’m still dry probably won’t drink until tomorrow. It is nice to wake up on Saturday and feel 100% right away.

Partner and I did dry January this year + cleaned up eating after the holidays, feeling much better but I did have a pour of bourbon on Feb 1.

That said, we’re trying to change our drinking habits overall to make it more of a social couple of beers every so often thing and less of a bored Weekday night after an annoying day of work thing.

The Whole 30 made me enjoy the food I made and look at finding ways to have similar type items without all the BS! I learned to make my own mayo, ranch, pesto, etc.

I had my first drink on Wednesday, only had 2. Had a couple last night as well. I think one thing that I’m trying to focus on is only having two types of booze and if I can’t, just drinking soda water. This way I have a little better quality cocktail/sipper, but without needing to have 8-10 Vodka/Sodas every time I drink…I think that will help me a lot.

Just found this thread! 6’6" 278 as of a week ago and trending in the right direction. Did dry Jan. and am keeping it going until a little vacation mid Feb. Goal is to get down to 255 by the end of the year! Trying to walk at least one round per week once it warms back up here in Texas. Doing F45 on M/W/F/S and lifting with a peloton on T/TH. Doing intermittent fasting more out of it is what i am used to doing.

Whole 30 is outstanding but it is A LOT of work. I never felt better while doing it. Slept better, more energy, gut better. Gosh, I think I should do that again!

Thicc Boi Here. 6’3” and 250 lbs right now. Graduated high school 25 years ago at 205 lbs. Ten years ago I got up to 289 and freaked out, started lifting weights, light cardio and by 2017 got it down to 240. Basically I float between 240 and 250 at all times. I play pick up hoops two times a week for 2 hours a pop. But my issue is I have never been able to break that 240 barrier for any extended period of time. I know for me that diet is probably 95% of my issue here. It’s not great but it’s not a disaster. I feel like I would need to drastically change everything when it comes to diet to go deep below 240. Has anyone had to deal with a hard plateau and what have you done to break through?

From a Thicc Boi for life I can say that diet is everything. It is simply being in calorie deficit. Obviously exercising burns calories so it helps but you can work out 7 days a week and not lose weight if your calorie intake is too high. What works for me when I plateau is being very matter of fact with keeping track of my food. Myfitnesspal or Noom are both outstanding resources.

Early 2023 Check-in.
Back down to 218 lbs after a very relaxing and enjoyable holiday season. Very happy with the progress from starting this journey last year when I was 250 lbs. Decided to start Noom back up to get some more structure early in the year.

Started going to the gym and lifting 5 times a week in October. I forgot how much I missed lifting, it has been a fantastic time. Big improvement to my overall life. Definitely noticing the weight and strength differences in my baseball rec league. Felt awful and locked up in the winter last year, felt good this one.

Lets hope this all translates to some good improvements on the course as well.

I floated between 235 and 240 for three years. Got down to 215 last year (I’ve had a hard time dropping the 10 pounds I gained on vacation in September though). Like you my diet isn’t perfect but it’s not terrible either, I have a problem with boredom snacking so a thing that helped was being mindful on if I’m actually hungry or just bored

Acknowledging movement is movement, the right kind of movement at the right rate is what optimizes appetite management and weight loss.

Doing highly strenuous workouts like pickup ball for 2 hours will burn a lot of calories but will also make your body want the fuel to sustain it.

When I pressed a floor in the past it was by walking daily with lifting intervals every 10 minutes. Spike the heart rate and then sustain a lower intensity rate. It let me manage my hunger and burn more calories.

I’m 3 weeks in to being back on the eating at a calorie deficit. I’ve put most of the weight I lost 6-7 years ago back on but realizing I was going to have to start buying XXL clothes because I was pushing the XL stuff as far as it would go made me finally get back on the train.

The first time I did this song and dance, I tracked my food almost every day for two years and lost almost 100lbs. Stopped tracking when I hit sub 200 and slowly put everything back on over the years.

I don’t think logging food is sustainable over the long term so this time I’m “tracking” my intake over the course of the day but not logging.

The biggest difference this go round is that I’m on the road much more often for work. On my prior success, a lot of it was predicated on eating a lot of the same things which was easier when I was home most days. I purposely chose to start this when I did because I knew that the next 2-3 months are going to involve a lot of travel and that if I can be successful while not having a routine, then I can be successful long term.

It’s been an off week for me. Still not really losing weight. I’m slowly improving my eating habits. Less soda, less snacks, less fast food. Wife’s birthday threw of the sweet snacks with a cake in the house.

On the plus side I feel stronger. Just finished my first month of weight training and I’m able to push myself harder in the gym and lifting way more than started. Still a long way to go and just enjoying the process.

Very proud to announce that after two weeks I finally broke through my stall and lost another pound. Now down 16 pounds and two notches on the belt. The thing I am most proud about is my attitude during the stall. Before Covid I lost 19 pounds using Noom but long term it really didn’t work for me. What I will say though is I knew a stalk was coming and I needed to change my attitude about it, so what I learned from Noom helped me here. I viewed it as a challenge rather than a failure and viewed staying the same weight as a win. I keep at what I was doing didn’t get frustrated and I am very proud of that. Just received a new shirt from the small shop today and I’m very close to needing a large instead of an extra large. The large to extra may not sound great to some but I’m 5’8” and at the beginning of December I weighed 241lbs. So between the shirt size and belt loops those are wins huge to me. My next goal is 222 pounds, and I’m much happier how I look with my shirt off, how I feel and the energy I have now. Sorry for the long post but it was a great day for me!

Good luck to everyone else and remember your long term goal and good things take!

Cheers fellas!!!

Just checking in with how everyone else is doing on their journey! I had another successful week and lost another pound. Hit golf balls for the first time yesterday since September and my wrist surgery, so my body was pretty sore today. God it felt good to hit golf balls again!!! Took today as an easy rest day but tomorrow it’s back to head down and back to work on the final goal. 17 pounds down, 2.4 to my next intermediate goal and 19 to go to my final goal. Keep at it fellas and I hope everyone is enjoying their own victories!!!

I’m feeling pretty good after weighing in for the first time in a while. Weight loss was one of my top priorities from Jan 2022-early fall 2022. A lot of other life stuff knocked it down the priority list since then. The good news is even without “trying” I maintained pretty well. Now I’m feeling like I can focus on weight loss again and for the first time possibly ever, the story isn’t “ok I’ve regained all this weight, time to start over”.

On a not so great note, I’ll be having ankle surgery to repair tendons and then have my heel bone “cut off and reattached in a better position” in mid-March. So the golf season is going to be delayed quite a bit. Non-weight-bearing for 6 weeks, then a few weeks in a boot, then physical therapy. At least my ankle (hopefully) won’t be improved from it’s current issues.

I had a stalled out couple of weeks after dealing with a little cold. Only really felt bad for 2 days last week but paused getting to the gym while I hack the garbage out. Have kept eating solid in the interim at least. Looking warm this long weekend here in the Midwest so hoping to get out for some golf + disc golf at least, looking forward to some fresh air.
