Heavyweights: Thicc Boys of the Refuge Unite!

Ted Naiman is a great follow.

PD Mangan is as well. A bit less restrictive on carb intake than Ted but pushes the whole food, resistance training model in a very approachable manner.

Has anyone had any luck finding NBs for a deal locally? I am awful knowing my actual shoe size.

How are we looking a couple weeks out? (Regardless of the answer, do it anyway)

Update:

I’m now hovering at 240lbs (having started the year at 282lbs).

I played three rounds of golf this week (all walking). I’ll be heading to the gym later. My energy levels feel at an all time high.

My plan has been simple and seems to have worked:

  • reduce booze (I’ve basically reduced my consumption to a tenth of what it was)
  • eat only one large meal and sometimes a smaller meal a day. I’ve discovered I don’t need any dinner most days
  • reduce snacking/sub for fruits
  • if I am going to have dinner limit to proteins and veggies. Limit carbs after lunch.

Do a little more exercise.

Not great… I’ve had a bad ankle ever since an ATV accident when I was young, where I broke both lower leg bones, ankle, and foot. Over the past month it had really flared up and was swelling really badly. I had an appointment with an orthopedic surgeon last week and was told to shut it down. MRI next Tuesday and probably surgery after to address a bone growth that is either pinching or has torn one or both of the tendons on the outside of the ankle.

I’m sorry, man, that’s brutal.

Hope it’s not too severe and you have a quick recovery.

Thanks man, my main goal is not letting it affect weight loss efforts.

After years of being overweight and getting nowhere with gyms and diets of every kind I decided to take the plunge and go for weight loss surgery. I had gotten up to 440 pounds and this was really affecting my golf game. After a year long process of meetings with doctors and social workers I was approved for surgery on November 9th of last year. I can proudly say I am now a much healthier person and am currently sitting at 242. That’s 198 pounds down in 11 months if anyone is still reading. This was definitely a life changing decision for me but has changed my life for the better. I now walk 9 three or four nights a week and will walk an 18 here and there. I’m hoping to get to 200 but the weight loss is slowing down. I’ll get there I just have to keep at it and get my exercise in over the winter. If anyone has any questions please reach out, I’m an open book.

After a few weeks of madness, I’m back with a Friday update.

First up, the numbers:
Screen Shot 2022-10-28 at 9.21.21 AM

After stalling out due to the exhaustion and pain that came with COVID and my ensuing recovery, we finally get the needle moving again! I’m still not back to full workouts, but have been doing light ones and spending lots of time on the driving range and pitching area getting ready for the NIT next week. The last two times I had COVID, reentering full workouts too quickly caused pulled muscles and other over-use injuries at very low effort thresholds, and the last thing I want to do is go to the NIT even more banged up than I already am.

I have also further secured my title as the “Side-Effect Kid.” One of my early runs of COVID caused hypertension, and I’m now on my third drug trying to treat it. The first one caused a whole body skin reaction, the second made me vulnerable to heat exhaustion and then caused severe GI symptoms. Hopefully the third will be a charm.

That’s awesome guys, keep up the good work!

Just wanted to quickly share my experience. In college, I was 6’1 and about 160. Got married in 2015 and jumped up to 185. I was a big sports guy in high school and college and was accustomed to eating whatever I wanted with no consequences due to my activity levels and metabolism. At the beginning of October, I got on the scale for the first time in a long time and saw a number that actually scared me; 212. I knew I had been getting bigger, but had no idea I had gained an additional 30 pounds.

I have never really enjoyed exercise but after seeing that number, a switch flipped in my head. I re-joined a local gym and and go for mix of cardio and weightlifting at least three times a week. If I don’t go, I ride the exercise bike we have at home. I started tracking what I eat religiously with the goal of 1,500 net calories per day. One month in and I now weigh 196.7 pounds. I’m honestly kind of blown away by the results and am hoping to get back down to 180 before reassessing if it’s time to go up to maintenance calorie consumption.

Dang, looking good!! What are your biggest reasons for your success?

So the main reason is, I suppose, to take everyday as it comes. There are no real cheat days as a result and no days where I have to go to the gym. The only rule I have is check if I am really hungry and if I am to eat something. So some days I’ll have two meals other days I’ll have one. I’ve also tried to be more mindful in what and how I eat. I enjoy food more because I’m consuming less of it. I can still have ice cream, pizza etc, but I’ll make sure on the next day I eat light. I’ve gotten into a rhythm and it feels normal, it doesn’t feel like I’m dieting. I monitor my weight daily. I’ll go up some days and others I’ll go down. If I’m going down more often than not, I know I’m doing something right.

Previously when I’ve dieted, I’ve exercised a tonne and gave myself an excuse to eat. It didn’t work. Now I mix my exercise up, some days I’ll just walk all day instead of catching public transport, others I’ll take my bike. Others I’ll go to the gym. Other days, I’ll just exercise using whatever I have at home. I’ve found I have a lot more energy and if I feel I need to burn some off, I’ll do some push ups, go for a walk etc. this feeling usually comes on in the evening when I’m home, so, no, I’m not busting out the push ups at work.

I used to be around 90kg until I lost control of my eating and diet 20 years ago. So, my aim is to get back to around there. 92/95kg would be good. I’ll then experiment with different things to stabilise my weight.

That’s awesome man. It sounds like you are doing all of this the right way, and by that I mean in a super healthy and sustainable way. This is exactly the type of lifestyle change I am trying to implement this year. No crash diets or crazy workout regimens, just basic make better choices and index on action. Thanks for sharing!

Okay Mo’ Fo’s. Let’s do this. Between the New Year, the Goals Pod, and just generally tired of clothes being tight and a fat neck I am actually feeling motivated to work out.

My wife has a job at a college and I get a free gym membership so it is fucking go time. Getting my first workout in today after work.

Weighed myself this morning and I am depressed to report I weigh 255.4 lbs. The heaviest I’ve ever weighed and I truly cannot live like this.

Love This!

Started Whole30 on Monday morning and needing a little push to help jumpstart my Dad Bod. I can already tell is making changes based on how I feel.

I go to Orange Theory 3 times a week, which is a good start, but the intake/intake amounts needs to be better so I can get back into the 2XL (3XL in some cases) comfortably.
