Heard on the No Laying it Up Podcast

Listened to the best players without a major pod this morning, and the Luke Donald erasure here is disgraceful. @Tron have some respect for your captain.

Unless I missed it, I was multitasking getting ready. If so, carry on.

I’m not sure anything disgusts me in my life as much as @Tron is disgusted at the words “Corey Connors”. 4 wiki yellows in majors and 3 top 10s in sigi events this year almost made my boy barf.

Luke Donald was number 3.

Name I was surprised to be left off was Oosthueizen.

Yeah probably wasn’t mentioned cause he won one. TP ragrets the air.

The anti-Canada sentiment is blinding everyone. Sad.

I missed it, complete mea culpa!

That’s the soup of the day around these parts!

To be fair, it took me about a minute to remember he won one. I was about to respond that he doesn’t really have many PGA Tour wins (turns out it’s 0) and he either T10s or MCs hard at majors. We remember those, but not all the times he doesn’t contend. And then I remembered he won at St. Andrews in 2010…

It’s kind of easily forgotten because he so soundly beat everyone’s ass.

He’s definitely a top-10 “what if” golfer. Like what if he wanted to do work on his game instead of farm.

Tiger might be number 1 in that category. What if he hadn’t fucked up his body by playing IRL COD…

2 or T2 six times.

3 or T3 twice.

Two more top 10’s.

More than Tommy lad!

Best current player without a major should include Rory since 2015

I may have missed it, but how is Rickie not among like the top 3 for best players to never win a major, yet alone top 10.

For starters, I think Rickie’s had a better career than Tommy and was surprised he didn’t make the top 10. I understand he’s not good anymore but he has 8? wins including a players. Top 5 in every major, 3 runner ups, 9 top 5s in majors, 13 top 10s. Each are more than Tommy lol.

But… but… the eye test. And the hair.

Monty, Westy, Macdonald Smith, Harry Cooper, Bill Mehlhorn, Donald, Stricker, Kenny Perry are all well ahead of Fowler (and Fleetwood). Not to mention Hovland and Cantlay at this point. Lietzke, Doug Sanders, Jay Haas, Scott Hoch, Mike Souchak also have a decent case.

Can also make a good argument for old-timers Jug McSpaden, Ed Dudley, Mike Brady, and Bobby Cruickshank.

An asterisk needs to be added to Smith, Dudley, Brady, and Mehlhorn as they all won the Western Open which has a strong argument for being the 4th major prior to the Masters coming to prominence.

There’s at least one name in there that’s ChatGPT generated

Do you think it’s Bill Mehlhorn, Jug McSpaden, or Bobby Cruickshank?

My heart says Jug McSpaden but my brain says Bill Mehlhorn. It’s too normal sounding and has an extra H in there that’s kind of like a sixth finger in an AI generated image

Look if you played golf before 1930 I don’t really care, I’m not going to spend time arguing about guys that old especially since I can say without a doubt, I never saw them swing a golf club.

I agree on Westy, Monty and Donald. I do think Fowler was about equal with Stricker and Perry but I am willing to concede mostly because my argument was more about having guys like Tommy/Cantlay/Vic ahead of Fowler, but lumped it all into one. Fowler imo is certainly in the top 10 of players to not win a major that played on color television.

To be totally honest, it was more about how we over inflate Tommy. He’s most certainly behind like 20 guys for me, including like 10 active players.
