Heard on the No Laying it Up Podcast

Didn’t see one thread to post thoughts, questions, feedback etc. for the medium most of us probably consume the most— the podcast!

So here’s a thread.

All I’d like to say to start is the “Bland Slam” from @Tron was :man_cook:t2::kiss:

@djpie called Rory a ball speed imposter…. Which was sick, because…. Well… it’s true…

@Soly referring to the PGA Tour pandering to 55 year old white haired guys cut deep…I am 55, have no hair but a bit of grey in my beard.

Was it public knowledge JT was on the “selection committee” for picking Keegan? Where else has that been reported and who else was involved?

Guess that means JT will be on the team then

It was talked about at the time it happened

I feel like it wasn’t a part of the story until a day or two later, so it was easy to miss, but when the discourse about “the boys club” started happening, the fact that JT was part of choosing him to be captain became an important point

Who else was? Jordan?

Yeah JT said “Jordan and I…” and I’m now assuming they have taken over the DL3, Freddy Couples, etc gold ol boy roles.

There have always been players on the Ryder Cup “Committee” or whatever they’re calling it. I’m not sure how it has evolved over the last few years but players have been involved in the process since going back to 2015.

Was also kind of funny hearing JT talk about talking to Stricker about who they should select for captains pick. I mean I figured they had input, but hearing about the boys club in action was nice verification.

Do you really think the veteran players shouldn’t have input on captains picks? That sort of thing feels like the most “sounds bad at first but when you actually think about it, makes a lot of sense”

I enjoyed the business of golf pod a lot. Fun format too and I’d rather have the real sourced info than a public interview with someone who can’t share stories.

Seems like the ol’ Tour has progressively built this behemoth structure that needs to be blown up rather than tweaked in any new deal/funding arrangement. The 75% pre-sold ads piece was the most surprising to me as a layperson – and just brutal for locking in the shitty the TV experience.

i haven’t finished the pod yet and they got into some of this a bit… but if there’s a follow-up, i’d love to know more comparables vs. other sports.

@soly mentioned verizon is the tech sponsor for the NFL… is PGA’s ATT? and what’s the difference in those two spends? maybe this was covered and i missed it.

the reason i ask is because i think part of the “problem” is that golfers have an overinflated sense of what they should earn.

and i agree i really apprecaited the pod – full send on more big-j-journo-adjacent content with an NLU twist.

one big thing in partnerships is making categories as granular as possible, e.g., verizon is the telecom partner for the NFL.

my favorite manifestation of this are teams and leagues breaking out domestic and imported beer / car sponsors so that they can have a stack that accommodates AB, modelo, ford, and mercedes.

Thoroughly enjoyed Denny Cash’s work. Ready to invest in whatever scheme he has cooking next.
