It’s been a whirlwind couple of weeks. Thought I’d share some updates.

Golf Updates:

  • Got out to play my first round of the year. My goal for this year was to break 100 at any new course. We ended up playing Kyber Run in Johnstown, OH with temps in the mid 50’s after a few warm days of rain. Pretty sloshy and greens were rugs.
  • I shot a 95 with SEVERAL 3 putts. (not uncommon. #banputting)
  • If felt to get out an play. Even the though the round was slow, it definitely is my safe place.

Cancer Updates:

  • Most of you know, I’ve switched back to a systemic chemo which means everything goes to my port. The benefit of the HAI pump is the chemo goes directly to the liver with much smaller side effects.
  • After yesterday’s round of systemic, the symptoms came back right away. Throat closing, cold sensititivity, nausea, fatigue and neuropathy in my hands.
  • I’m also an oral chemo alongside the systemic, something I haven’t done before. 9 Pills a day for the next 7 days. Some expected symptoms with that are more fatigue, nausea, hair thinning, etc.

Yesterday was tough. The mental build-up and prep for something like that plays with your mind. I’ve done 12 rounds of systemic before, but this one didn’t compare. Before, I had no idea what to expect and I think deep down, I preferred it that way. It makes walking through that door easier when I don’t know, or at least makes sense to me.

With yesterday’s treatment, my first round with systemic in over 2 years, I couldn’t shake that fear, knowing what I’m walking into.

I don’t look sick. I don’t feel sick. But, I know I have to GET sick in order to fight this thing again.

But, I promise I’ll keep showing up.

Back at work, dragging, but not letting cancer decide what I’m strong enough to do or not.

Thank you all for the immense support. I hope we can tee it up someday and somewhere soon.

Thanks for being in my corner. Love ya!

Goose

Just know that you are not alone. Just as in golf, the mental struggle is absolutely real.

I recently completed 6 rounds of chemo, and while my side effects were less than you describe, rounds 2-6 were challenging because I knew what was coming. But I also knew that there was light at the end of the tunnel (my chemo was at 3 week intervals and recovery was about 2 weeks, so I had about a week of feeling better but also knowing the next round was on deck and the cycle was about to begin again).

You are an inspiration to me because of how you are attacking the physical aspects. I let the chemo knock me down and now that I’m on the other side, I’m paying for it. The muscle atrophy is difficult to recover from, and impacting my attempt to play golf at the level that I’m used to.

So keep stepping through those doors, kicking ass and taking names! We’re with you!

Ready to dance with the devil again.

The last 2 weeks I’ve been trying to focus more on gratitude. It’s a tough choice to make when you’re in the fog, but I know how blessed I am to be able to fight.

The support means everything.

Keep showing up!
