I just want to say that… Bedford Springs bangs. I don’t know that I’ve played any other Omni courses, but Bedford Springs is great, and most everyone will enjoy playing it.
I don’t care much for the people that make the NLU content. I can’t say that would be true about other creators (for example, having met and spent time with Andy Johnson, I’m pretty confident I’d like stuff that feature him) but I’m not really seeking any of it out.
Yes, I heard some of the podcasts first and ended up here. Turns out, I like the stuff here, like some of the podcasts, and do not like most of the videos.
I only watched Strapped. Stopped TS this season and didn’t make it to the end of Scandinavia. This coming from a guy who watched Australia to Oregon multiple times over.
No film rooms, no pods, nothing else. I paid 90 bucks for this community and to “support” Strapped.
Understand the takes on the content. Personally, I enjoy seeing anyone in the NLU universe in a video. If it’s a match, then all the better. If there are dramatic readings involved, then fantastic. This series is about as tastefully done as these things get. YMMV.
One other point worth noting here: It is really, really expensive to run a profitable content company in 2023. It is even more expensive if you want to run it with ambition and creativity. There just aren’t many outlets willing to film in farflung places and send writers around the world.
If a series like this makes the math even a little bit easier or provides even a little bit more flexibility when the team wants to add more personnel or take another trip, then I can live with it.
My two cents, if you’re looking for a podcast, I would check out the “Yolk With Doak” series that is part of the The Fried Egg podcast. There are probably 20 episodes and all very interesting. You should be able to search for them within The Fried Egg catalog of episodes. Tom Doak is a lot of things but he’s certainly a good interview.
If you’re looking for a book, this might be a good place to start, I plan on reading it.
Anatomy of a Golf Course by Tom Doak is also good.
And going back a bit - The Links by Robert Hunter.
And browse around Golf Course Atlas, read some of the essays and interviews. https://golfclubatlas.com/
The Fried Egg also has a golf architecture section on their website that’s basically architecture for dummies. Quick reads that will provide a foundation for when you dive into some of the more esoteric stuff.
I was very into golf courses as a kid but this was the book the really cracked my head open and sent me down the path so to speak. Doak is a very good writer and explains the basic concepts of design and strategy very well in a short, readable way.
@justine , holes 6-7 of the Omni homestead, that music as it came in I did a double take and thought Bob Dylan was going to start singing “Oxford Town”, was thinking WTF, they ponied up for Dylan ? So… long way of asking (what was that music?)
There’s actually 2 Fazios there haha. Foothills is also a Faz.
Word I heard from members is Crenshaw hated the course so much that he’s never been back since the opening. It’s fun to play, though, but ya definitely not your normal C&C.
The course that they played in the video is probably the best experience of the 3 near the resort (I haven’t played Palmer, which is about 30 mins away). Definitely the most scenic. I think someone was talking about how it didn’t really pop on video, and I think that’s true since a huge part of what makes the course interesting is the land movement and how hilly it really is.
#2 and #10 are both example of cool holes that have really interesting downhill second shots that just get flattened on video.
Another thing is that it looked like the guys just took driver on every hole, making the course seem boring off the tee. There’s at least 3-4 holes where I had to think about what club to hit on the tee shot and ended up taking less club for position.
I like the Omni videos. They’re not Strapped or TS, but they’re solid and they not just playing it at crappy courses.
My favorite part about some of the backlash here is people previously saying “I just love watching the guys play golf” and now it’s “well they’re not doing it for the right reasons”.
