Does 10 at Riv stink? An NLU Investigation

I think you nailed it. 4 and 10 both used to be outstanding holes, but they have been passed up by time and the horrible grassing condition sure doesn’t help.

If they regressed 4 to allow it to actually play as a Redan where players land short and run it onto the green would be so, so, so good for tv.

Here’s the thing about 4…

It still kinda works as is!

“A mishit shot is one of the only ways to hit the green”

…ok? So a low-spin ball bounces up on the green when playing the slope short right?

Has anyone tried that? Like intentionally? One guy in the comments says bunt driver was the play for him and that it worked for him!

Or are they gonna bitch cause they want to take the bunker out of play and thus not have any chance to then hit the green?

“It stinks,” said Rory McIlroy. “It absolutely stinks.”

Yo @kvv, did you ask Rory “does 10 stink?” or something like “what are your thoughts on 10?”

10 does not stink. Is there a decision to be made off the tee? No. That stinks. But is there a decision to be made on the second shot? Absolutely and most pros have no idea how to deal with strategy on a 10-40 yard shot and they end up looking like idiots. It’s amazing. Make an easy birdie or look like a fool. That’s a good hole.

I think I said “Is it still a great hole or does it stink?”

4 & 10 are great holes. Always have been, always will be. Technology getting out of hand doesn’t change that.

Both holes function brilliantly for the type of people who play them 51 weeks of the year.

KVV’s investigation only really determined that technology is out of control and that most pros don’t understand architecture.

But we already knew both those things so :man_shrugging:t2:

As for 10, I have almost no doubt in my mind that if the layup/cross bunker that is 50ish yards short was moved to where those 3 little trees are planted, it would open up far more options. Still punishes guys going for it if they miss left but adds a spot where they actually have somewhat of an angle into the green. I’m almost fully convinced that by doing that, they don’t have to touch the green or its complex (though maybe some sand layer removal would be good, too)

For anyone but a tour pro, yes there absolutely is.

I think 10 stinks to watch the Pros play, but would be very fun for the average golfer to play and very fun to watch the average golfer play.

Something has to be done to the hole for the sake of pace of play. Rory’s suggestion about improving the run up of grass makes the most sense.

Kind of a joke I am going to watch a 3 man group on Sunday of an elevated event at “one of the best courses on tour”

10 doesn’t stink. Modern equipment stinks.

Modern pursuit of faster and faster green speeds also stinks

+1 x 2.

This is now a promising list of things that actually do stink, and they must stink A LOT to make something so unstinky seem even a bit stinky to anyone.

Enjoyed the read KVV.

I think one of my takeaways is that TV has never done a good job, to me, of showing all the nuance of the hole. The crazy tilt of the green. How raised the green is. The knobs and undulation in the landing area in front of the green. It all just feels flat on tv.

I am a rube. That said - I would watch a live feed of 10 all day.

My understanding is it’s most a grass issue. The most likely thing to happen is it’s going to stick. It’s not meant to release on that grass.

It’s one thing if you can bet on the release and then it becomes about distance/spin/trajectory to get the shot right.

They can hit the right shot but it didn’t even get a chance to be rewarded because the ground prevented that. I don’t think it has to be rewarded - but when the chance of reward becomes random, they’re incentivized to take away that risk and just play for long because short/above the hole with the green speeds is fucked.

I have.

The kikuyu reminded me of the early strains of zoysia tried in the deep south.

On Friday’s SS pod Andy Johnson said that kikuyu roots run very deep and regrassing wound entail digging down something like four feet or else it will just come back. Morikawa’s mishit did turn out well though, not sure how because my understanding is kikuyu makes run-up shots a non viable option.

Hell yeah tell ‘em Frank.
