A thread for the Texas folks

See @lonestarguido description above - the most impressive thing about DCC is the clubhouse and the social scene there anyways, so embrace the fact that you get to observe the ridiculousness of Dallas high society in its natural habitat. Not sure about lefty rentals, I’d just call ahead of time to the courses you’re thinking about playing, and ping this thread again for thoughts on courses to play.

If you can’t find any lefty rentals let me know. I’m a lefty and live 10 minutes from Plano. You can certainly borrow my clubs if the logistics work out.

Very generous! I think we should just play together instead  can’t remember the dates but I will update later

Would be interested in meeting up as well. Fellow lefty living in Richardson (right next to Plano). Keep us posted!

Would bet that the Tribute would have a lefty rental set. Fun course as well.

This is a long shot, but I am heading to the DFW area the week after July 4th to visit my girlfriend and plan to play golf every day while she is at work. If anyone wants to play and is available during the day on a weekday, let me know! Looking at all the courses recommended in this thread and others. May head to Lions Muni in Austin one day as I have read so much about it. Thanks!

I wouldn’t expect to be impressed with Lions in ATX. Nearly every local that plays it, doesn’t necessarily like it, but it’s an interesting story. Has a lot of history and local support to keep UT from turning it into buildings, but it’s probably not worth the 3 hour drive for the golf.

Agree with @mgleason. It’s a nice story and worth preserving for the sake of muni golf in the city but not worth a 3 hour drive each way. Plenty of good golf in the DFW area to go around.

I can confirm that Lions is probably not worth the drive. I have played there when traveling to ATX and while it’s fun and gives you a bit of a golf fix for being cheap and close to downtown, it’s not worth the drive but that’s just my two cents

Playing in Houston in July (yes i know its gonna be hot)- Narrowed it down to Herman Park, Gus Wortham, or Wildcat…(staying close to minute maid so wanted to play close)
Can someone give me the good the bad and ugly about any of these

Gus Wortham is in fantastic shape. I played it on Sunday (6/23). Avoid the bunkers at all costs. There’s too much sand in them after the renovation. I have now had 4+ fried eggs out there.

Herman Park is short and crowded.

Wildcat is overpriced for what they offer. It’s typically in good shape but it gets so much play that it can be hit or miss.

Right now Gus is the best value in the city.

Agreed. Gus is good but I haven’t played it yet this year. Probably best value until Memorial opens up. I’m out in Cypress and we have a few decent tracks. Black Horse is one of the better public courses in the greater city area. Cypress lakes also not bad

Played Hermann Park last week; course is in decent shape outside of a few greens, but agree with @3wiggle that it’s too short and too crowded. Play Gus if you can.

Just another voice saying that Lions isn’t worth the 3 hour drive, and the story is interesting. Course isn’t in the best shape, but the layout is simple and fun for beginners.

Dallas checking in (Arlington, really). +1 for Cedar Crest and Stevens Park. Fun courses and great views

I haven’t played Stevens in a long time so I honestly wasn’t even aware. That’s unfortunate

This is from their website. I actually see it as a positive that they are holding themselves to high standards.

Always a good thing to see a course doing something like this

Yeah, they just lost their greens, but putting in the champion bermuda and improving drainage should make that place even better, haven’t heard yet when exact reopen date is.

Late to the party but just wanted to say that I was able to register for the TGJ 2 man at Trinity from the waitlist.

Didn’t think I would get selected but figured it was worth a shot. I’m generally the unluckiest person in the world so maybe there’s a chance for y’all
