A thread for the Texas folks

This is really cool, Mike is a really good instructor…where is it going to be located in LC?

Is your BIL in the f&b world?

I’ll have to follow up with you on that, haha

He’s not an f&b guy specifically, he previously worked at Texas Golf Center (formerly Jim McLean), which is where Bury was teaching for a while. He got them up and running. Built out their bar and restaurant and ran all of their marketing and just kind of did whatever was needed.

I’m assuming this is what was in that insta post

I went to City GC once. Super nice to be able to watch your previous shots and have trackman data. But like @SliceyMcShankerston said, it’s only two bays, so coupling that with a solid amount of members in the crescent and Jonathan’s instruction, it’s definitely not a spot to count on if you’re not a member.

Crystal Falls is a great track! Most certainly a ball striker’s course but is beautiful and very well laid out in my opinion!

Heading to Horseshoe bay in mid March. We are staying on property and playing 3 rounds. Found quite a bit of online info on Apple Rock and Ram Rock. We won’t get to play slick rock because of the aeration schedule but we have some connections and should get to play Summit Rock instead.

2 questions:

  1. how is Summit Rock similar and/or different to the other 3 resort courses?
  2. Is the lake warm enough in mid March to use for boating/swimming yet? We are coming down from Nebraska so this will be my first time visiting Texas this time of year.

That’s an absolute treat if you get to play Summit. Summit is much newer golf course. RTJ did the other three in the 70’s and 80’s. Summit opened in 2012 and is a Nicklaus. The biggest difference in the RTJ’s and Summit is the demands off of the tee. Summit gives you a lot of room but tests you more on the second shot. Apple and Ram test you on every shot.

Anyone in DFW have any experience at Gentle Creek in Prosper? My wife and I moved up here a year ago and I’d love to join somewhere one day. It seems like the most “affordable” private place around here.

I had a very similar experience when I played there for the first time a month or so ago. We made the terrible decision to try to walk it. We soon realized that was a big, big mistake walking uphill to the #2 tee box.

It was about a 20 mph wind that day. When you combine that with several blind tee shots and dormant fairways with the slope of a Nascar track…we did not have a good time. Lost my 2nd shot on 18 and proceeded to walk straight to the car. I might try it again sometime in the spring…might.

I played there this past weekend. Despite the logo hate here I still wanted a hat or something. I could not believe how little attention they paid to the merch. Hats were lined up with several different logos/colors stacked, shirts not on display at all, unorganized. I’m not saying you need full on mannequins here but how about at least organizing by color/logo and yes take the shirts out of the damn plastic bags.

Gentle Creek is a solid track that has had many many ups and downs since inception. There are probably many more folks on here with more current information/views. But back when it was built the intent was to make it “Preston Trail North”. Prosper was the boonies back then and the golf only concept was geared towards N. Dallas/Plano $ folks to have a second golf only club… thus why its a golf club with no tennis and pool. I knew a ton of my dads buddies that joined and it was rocking for a bit and then really fizzled out after 2008. (from there…someone else can pick up the story)

Can answer lake question, the lakes temp will be cold but if the weather is warmer it will be okay. Will be nice to hot tub if you have one available. I would just check the weather in advance.

Found a YouTube video w Kyle Berkshire playing Summit Rock. Looks fun although I’m thinking I won’t play the course quite like he did! Ha

Anyone played Butterfield Trail in El Paso lately? Thinking about taking advantage of an upcoming free weekend to go and check it out. Intriguing that Coyne said it was his favorite course in the state during his tour, considering he played almost all of the big name private courses.

It’s a brute from the tips for sure.

If you’re a low cap they have a set of combo tees that mixes the tips and the one ups. Much more playable and enjoyable that way.

My cap usually is between 10-12. I won’t mess with the tips… I usually play courses at tees between 6200-6500. I’m sure I’ll have an option

Any east Texas golfers in here? I’m out here in Nacogdoches and looking for more courses to cross of the list without the obvious Tempest and Pine Dunes. Any recommendations out there?

I am out of lufkin have you played tempest? I keep meaning to get up there to play. Rayburn country is another one I would mention.

I have played tempest a few times. Incredible place. Always want to run it back after 18.

I played it in August and it was a little rough around the edges, as I think the Red Hawk GC group basically saved it from the grave. The bones are still there and it was a fun track that should only get back into better shape.
