A thread for the Texas folks

And prepare for them to be disappointed that it’s the size of a 800sqft studio apartment and no basement

If I had a nickel for every person I’ve heard mention how much smaller it is than they expected, I think I’d be retired by now.

The Alamo is fine. The problem is the surrounding area. The city approved a plan in April to revamp the plaza to better outline the actual battlefield, but right now it is just a tiny building across the street from a stupid Ripley’s Believe It or Not.

Meanwhile, the Fort Worth Stockyards have already improved and become a place that locals like to go again. And you can even find an accurate history of the location…

Ha, our tourist trap beats your tourist trap.

I love Fort Worth and I love the stockyards. Unfortunately, I think the Mule Alley investors are only beginning, and will eventually overtake a ton of the stockyards with some overly generic “modern cowboy” bars and restaurants. John Wayne will be everywhere.

But for right now, it’s a great mix of old honky tonks and new stores, bars and restaurants.

I completely agree. It’s got a great vibe right now but 5-10 years and the whole thing will look different. And that probably goes for the rest of the city as well.

New Braunfels is a dark horse candidate. 30 minutes north of San Antonio, about an hour and a half from Austin. Has great golf, incredible food scene, and a real laidback culture. While it does get crazy in the summer because of the river and Schlitterbahn, the other 8 months of the year is phenomenal. Would definitely move there if I had the choice.

NB is cool. Also only 45 minutes from Austin.

If I could work truly remote, I’d probably live in Kerrville or Fredericksburg. Until then, since I’m in tech, Austin it is.

San Antonio in a nutshell

This is very solid

As someone who lives in Dallas, Mule Alley is just a Dallas version of Fort Worth. Driver is badass, but it just feels like a country version of a ton of Dallas spots.

Don’t Dallas my Fort Worth

ROTFL

Upon further research, this admittedly may not be the most factual statement I’ve made. Rudy regrets the error.

I am interested in playing in some big plex events this upcoming year. I’m not sure how many I’ll actually be available for because I do work in the golf industry but I would really like to join the group. Is there anything I need to do to sign up?

We’d be happy to have you, no matter how many events you can make!

Sign-up spreadsheet is here and we’ve also got a WhatsApp thread for organizing rounds: Big Plex Roost/Local Chapter - Google Sheets

List is down to the potential locations:

Fort Worth
New Braunfels (or really anywhere between SA & Austin)
South of Dallas

Looking for a little bit more then an average lot so options are a little thin. Wife keeps getting trapped by South Dallas developers that will say anything to beat my FW and SA talking points. I make good money. The Texas housing market is out of control.

When you say South Dallas or South of Dallas, was there a specific area?

Also for larger lot sizes, Parker County (immediately west of FW) is a strong place to look at as well.
