No, my point is that it’s not newfangled. It was a shot at @Jdonelson. Also, as a lifelong Texan who loves brisket, I subscribe to all the bbq meats and all the styles.
We just can’t let any of the KC folks into this thread. While I also enjoy KC bbq, their self-love is insufferable.
I know – couldn’t resist jumping into the fray with my NC takes. I’ve got some STRONG opinions on the proper use of the word “barbecue” and what is best. When I first moved to Texas I put extra credit question on all my exams that was “Where does the best barbecue come from,” and “Southeastern NC” was the only answer that got the extra credit.
Do I really like brisket? Yes. But would I rather pay $8 for a pulled pork sandwich with fries/baked beans, Cole slaw, and a drink or $13 for two and a half strips of brisket? I’ll take my sandwich every time. Just don’t think the bang for the buck is there at most places for brisket.
(Confession time: I’ll take a smoked sausage over any of them)
Convinced the girlfriend to try Goldee’s this Sunday morning. I will likely know in about 10 seconds if the line is too long. It’ll likely be chaos. If it’s too long, I’ll just swing it on over to one of the other ranked places in Fort Worth, aka the Home of Texas Barbecue.
Feel like we’re starting to draw some regional/stylistic battle lines for next year’s Buc-ee’s Cup. Keep the spicy (or vinegary) takes coming.
Speaking of Franklin and gentrified hipster bbq, has anyone tried Loro either in Austin or the new location that just opened in Dallas? It’s on my to-do list this month.
I’ve been to the Dallas one twice. They have a really good happy hour if you can get there from 2-6 on weekdays. Everything is good, but the chicken karaage is our favorite. I’ve been craving it since we went last week.
I’ve been to the Dallas Loro a few times now. The food is excellent. I’m not a fan of the service concept. You wait for a table for up to an hour or longer on busy nights (which isn’t that big a deal; they have a nice, albeit somewhat small, beer garden waiting area). Then when you are “seated” you basically are at a long set of picnic tables (indoor and outdoor), but you have to go to the bar to order all food and drinks. No waitstaff to speak of, just bus service and food delivery.
