I know Fresh Coast killed me with their logo - but if you make stickers or something with one of the first two, I’d contribute and support!

Don’t get me started on the Dallas Mavericks logo (a Maverick is a cow, not a horse).

Now, this definition chain is sort of a cop out. Let me explain.

The term “Maverick” came from Samuel Maverick, a somewhat prominent figure in early Texas history, who didn’t brand his cattle. The reasons for this can be explained to laziness or even underhandedness(in order to claim all wild cattle in the area). As such, when someone originally said Maverick, they were explicitly talking about cattle, but specifically Samuel Maverick’s cattle. Since the cattle were unbranded, another rancher in Texas could come across wild cattle, and call it “mavericks”. This wouldn’t happen anywhere else, and at the time unbranded cattle in any other part of the country was unlikely to be described this way. Which I think is key to how the term arose to have a wide definition, as it was always viewed as slang.

As a Texan, if someone asked, “what’s a nickname for a wild horse?”… I’d say Mustang. Which is also the nickname for SMU’s teams, Dallas’ original basketball team, coincidentally enough.

But if someone said, “that horse is a Maverick”, I think they were essentially saying it was wild and/or untamed, not that its key characteristic is that it is unbranded. This could apply as an adjective to a person as well. If someone was called a “Maverick” they are essentially saying someone was unpredictable or a wildcard.

This colloquial definition can probably be reinforced by the TV Western that aired on ABC from 1957 to 1962 called, “Maverick”. This show followed the various members of the Maverick family, but mainly the two wild ass brothers. You’re probably more familiar with the 1994 movie. But at the heart of this was poker playing and sort of being a wild west Han Solo and not really someone dealing with horse/cattle.

Just this year, the Mavericks officially changed their name in China from “xiaoniu” which it had been for over 20 years and means “little cows”… to “duxingxia”, which translates in English to “Lone Ranger Heroes.” But why did this translation go unchanged for so long? And why did they choose to add a horse as a mascot?

Let me put it this way, I’d just boil it down to Texas culture. To an outsider, the original logo with the cowboy hat probably matches the “cattle” definition more accurately, but much like the original Texas Rangers logo it really just has to do with Texas. Someone wearing a cowboy hat doesn’t mean they are a cowboy. The term “cowboy” itself sort of has a similar connotation to “maverick” these days. When they added the horse, I think it’s essentially just a giant conflation of Texan symbols. To some, a Maverick, the person type, would ride a horse, just like a cowboy. To others, a wild horse is a “Maverick”. To everyone else, it’s just a natural regional mascot for a Dallas team.

TL;DR Texas.
