2024 Refuge Roosts: Local Clubs & Club Championship Outline

RT for the Links Troost. Still ironing out the details for the hinterlands caught between us and the Carolinaverse, so want to leave the possibility open for some more southern events or an out-of-region border battle.

My friends and I still do this in our group texts. Old twitter was the best.

It’s taken a number of days….but my Roosticles have made a point.

Shouldn’t we be ‘eastern civilisation’ as we are to the east of the grand old U S of A?!

Looks West to me? :man_shrugging:

I guess you could be facetious about it, but hey, let’s break it down. To get to Europe from the US, you’re flying East

In 6th grade I had just moved to VA from living for a few years in Hawaii. I took a WWII test and there was a geographical question on it. Got it wrong because my worldview was still HI at the time and everything was to the west. Damn teacher.

Maybe it’s because Europe was the start of western civilization

Word of advice to all Roosts (from someone that doesn’t matter at all): keep it simple. Don’t get too cute with events, or don’t try to book a ton of events. Too many events waters down the ones you do have, and as excited as we all are right now in December, we won’t get to play in one event per month for 10 months when we have all the other things a number of us play in as well.

I dunno. He might. He’s a member at Lakewood. Might ask him next time I see him.

It would be fun to have him and Bob out to one of our events

If we really wanted to break it down, you fly as much north as east. You go up into the Artic Circle and kind of fly over the top

So, what I’m trying to say is this whole thing is dumb :joy:

As someone who successfully ran a meetup a month last year, I can say this isn’t true.

Mix up the formats and courses to keep things fresh and make a season-long system that allows players to skip/miss some and you can absolutely do just that

And, on top of that, it gives more people who live much further away or with very busy lives more tries to attend one or two of them. It’s not a requirement to join the season-long event series. It’s just a thing on top that locals can join. A meetup is still just a meetup at its core

Respectfully, I don’t agree with this take. Shouldn’t this be at the discretion of said Roosts? If the collective group of the Roost is ready to play, isn’t it their prerogative to play as many or as little events as they desire?

I know the Roost I belong to, has a large group who already plays in multiple events and we as a whole have decided we want to play more. It isn’t watering it down if it’s mutually agreed upon. Just my $0.02…

I agree with this. To piggy back, changing the format and venues strengths the group and the experience. Again, speaking from experience, our group looks forward to the various formats and locations that are on the docket.

I knew there was going to be opposition to the stance because, well, Refuge. I’m also not saying have 2 events all summer. Space them out appropriately based on the size of your Roost and shift formats.
It’s obviously up to each individual roost. I hold no weight around here. But hey, go ahead and have something every 2 weeks and see how it goes. Let me know what happens!

It’s every 4-5 weeks. That’s what a month is.

And I can tell you what happened.

@tanner_sandel isn’t even in my Roost and he echoed the exact sentiment from the PNW Crew.

Because of COVID in 2020, we only had 2. In 2021, we did 8 meetups. They asked for more. So, now it’s 10.

I’m not knocking you for having an opinion. Obviously you have experiences that have helped you formulate your stance. I’m just saying, whether or not it seems “watered down” if the majority of that Roost wants to play weekly even, that’s their business. For the Roost that have only one event a month, I don’t think that’s all that bad, especially when most play a couple times a week as it is.

I do agree that a change in format is nice. Match play, stroke play, four ball, Wolf, skins games etc. keep it fun but that’s the whole purpose of the group is to come together and do just that.
