2024 NLU Summer Festival: August 26th @ Colorado Golf Club

It’s a brutal tournament course because #1 is maybe the most difficult hole on the course and you can absolutely eject yourself with a swing or two from the tee box there and you’re done before you’ve even started.

Not that I know anything about that sort of thing personally.

There are definitely other good private options outside of the “elite” ones like Cherry Hills.

Pinehurst, Lakewood CC, Columbine, Glenmoor, to name a few.

Also I can probably hit this guy up at Cherry Creek if anyones interested:

Truly a “if you are going to make triple, triple the first hole” type of situation.

Haven’t played a dye in a while. This is a good option as well

Will also mention:

  • Denver CC: who hasn’t worked here, but most recently renovated by Hanse, I think
  • CC at Castle Pines: Sure, it’s an 80s Nicklaus, but an interesting play after walking the golf club on Sunday.
  • Pradera: A wild counterpoint to CGC being an Engh design on similar land

So many railroad ties and water. A very Dye course

I would 100% play Glenmoor if given the chance, especially after what looks like a pretty sick Love Design reno, but for the record my understanding is that it’s one of those “Pete & Perry” Dye designs that’s like 98% Perry.

Which isn’t to bash it or anything, I mostly really like Perry’s golf courses.

My main issue is it’s very house lined and I have caused some property damage. Nothing like hitting a Lexus windshield because someone decided to leave their car parked in the driveway behind the green.

So 86’d from the property? Gotcha.

Family used to be members, gave it up a long time ago before all the assessments started. So no I was yelled at a lot and got to use my summer job money to pay for a windshield.

Blade a PW 185 one time and they call you a hooligan.

18 is also a nightmare for anyone with a left miss. Personally seen many balls into oncoming traffic over the wall.

One thing Denver doesn’t lack is access to good public golf courses.

I would recommend:

  • Green Valley Ranch - RANGE only. Has a trackman and utilizes tour response balls as their ball of choice. A great warmup to dial in your distances if you feel so inclined.
  • Pole Creek has some exceptional views for a decent cost. Also only about 90mns outside of denver
  • Murphy Creek

I am also not a golf course person, I care more about the vibes so take my suggestion above with a grain of salt if you’re into course design. That being said the views at Pole Creek are simply magical.

What do you have against the GVR course?

Never played there, just heard people don’t like it and it’s expensive lol

I worked there the summer it opened and enjoyed the course for what it was. Of course that was 20+ years ago so it wasn’t that expensive then (nevermind that I was playing for free). And there weren’t homes built all around it, which I’m sure hasn’t helped the vibe.

There are forced carries and a funky hole on the back nine, but I would certainly play there again.

Nothing really wrong at GVR except 18. Par 5 finishers are not my favs. Same at Todd Creek.

But if you’re going to make it to GVR from the south, then Riverdale Dunes isn’t that much further. And that’s a better play. In my opinion.

Eww. My biggest pet peeve of quality golf. Interest gone.

16 is worse than 18 IMO

Yeah, I was going to say. 16 is an abomination.

Is 16 the one down into the trees?

Yes, wetlands left and trees in the fairway. If you really, really hug the wetlands you maybe have a clean shot into the green. Otherwise the only way to play the hole is to lay far enough back that you can get a wedge/short iron over the trees onto the reen. But these are big ass mature cottonwoods. It’s not great.
