YOTB Presents: The Blade Challenge

Excerpt from @anon43372372’s Wiki page:

Fugaizi (birthdate unknown) is a world renowned expert in golf club anatomy and great guy in their own right. He is sometimes referred to as the “Blade-Decider” amongst the denizens of the popular golf message board The Refuge. Posts by Mr. Fugaizi are often accompanied by a picture of the Vitruvian mouse waving what appears to be golf clubs followed by a simple proclamation of “Blade” or “Not a Blade”

CONTROVERSY
Several Golf Club Manufacturers have expressed alarm at the overwhelming power Mr. Fugaizi holds within the Year of The Blade community. Most fear the dreaded “Not a Blade” designation being attached to their SpeedFoam, hollow bodied, tungsten inserted “Blade Iron”. Sales of these false Blades have been seen to fall precipitously following a ruling.

PERSONAL LIFE
Fugaizi resides in the United States of America with an unknown amount of family members

Hondo

Just Hondo.

Question here. Is bladey 85 an available option? I break 90 in probably half of my rounds but I’ve only broken 80 like twice with my full set, and that was on a par 69 (nice) so it doesn’t really count. I want to participate, but with where my game is now I’m stuck firmly in the middle of the two.

As the ever reluctant ruling body, I would say congrats on your Knifey Ninety, personally. HOWEVER you should absolutely set a personal goal of 85 and dominate it.

But also all of this is made up and do what you want! The Year is about artistry, not rules.

We’re not here to yuck your yums. The spirit of YOTB is about finding ways to make golf fun. Use your best judgement and don’t be a scumbag!

If we’re ever allowed to play golf in Ontario again, I’m looking forward to firing in to this. I’m a solid mid-to-high 80s shooter, and have never broken 80 (couple 80s, couple 81s). Honestly taking driver out might be the key to me smashing through that mark for the first time.

God, I miss golf right now.

I hereby propose the “Scummy Seventies” tag for anyone found completing the Bladey Eighty challenge with a non-blade in the bag.

want! any of those will work. not looking to break the bank on a set. even something that has S300’s or equivalent would be fine. I would probably toss some new grips on them before the challenge round anyway. I’m checking locally for some “sleepers” as my old boss at the golf store would say.

…and here I was thinking I didn’t have any blades in my collection

doing some ferrule work on the MP4s, and replacing the worn dri-tac with a new crossline+ on the random MP33 2i I have in preparation of the effort.

PSA - don’t buy white ferrules.

Milton looks like a fun pup.

hoping that “bringing home the bacon” is a metaphor for a successful run tomorrow.

Threw up an 88 this morning with driver being the only club in my bag I hit well. Only logical follow up is to take the driver out and take my first crack at the bladey 80 challenge, right?

Excuse my non-conforming wedge

gius…

conditions are tough out here. 20+mph swirling wind. and I left my laser at home. and my putter, currently using a rando from the demo bag. scraping it around but a bad club selection resulted in an early triple.

need a bird or two.

played white tees. made some nice putts with the scotty from the demo room! conditions were tough, with 20-30mph wind for the whole round.

so…I did not hit 18 cups. Father in law knocked a couple back to me, but nothing over 2 ft.

I also utilized the local rule to take 2 shots and drop along the radius from the hole on a lost ball on 2. It didn’t really help me as I still dropped in the native, made 6 and just as likely could have taken stroke and distance and made 5.

the birdie on 9 might have been the best birdie I’ve ever made. The fan was on, hurting, but mostly off the right. Hit a nice punchy 2i with a draw that rode the wind a little. Not sure how far my 2nd was but there was a sprinkler near me that said 167.

Pin was back right, so I was guessing 170. No wind? 8i. But for this shot I chose a choked 4i 3/4 punchy thing. I started it at the native, over the greenside bunker, and watched it pierce through the wind. My playing parter was saying “hit it wind!” but I knew I had just painted a fucking masterpiece. As it reached it’s apex it started to fall left towards the pin, landed pin high right of the flag, and rested 12’ behind the hole.

Fairly easy read, mostly flat, breaking left but against the wind. Just about a ball right, and with my newfound best friend the mallet, rolled it in with the precision of a fine tipped paint brush.

Greensite

It was definitely not all highlights. Swing was leaving me the last few holes and fought my butt off to get it in the house.

16 I hit a total queefer 2i off the tee, 218 left into the wind and hit 2i again into a bunker, which I was happy with. Good bogey, it was always a bogey hole with no 3w or driver.

17 I somehow missed a 200yd wide fairway, and got lucky to find it in the native, though in a bad lie. Tried to muscle out an 8i, but it only went about 40yds, in the native again. Punched a 4i to 130yds where I hit another 8i to 15ft and made the putt.

18 turned back downwind, had a downhill lie in the rough from 130. 50deg came out really well and rolled off the back. Pitched up to 4ft and kinda knew I needed to make it to feel semi-legit since it’s a par 70.

I don’t really feel like this counts, but it was still a very fun, memorable round.

Edited to follow the rules and add a bunch of detail only I care about.

I mean I didn’t play tournament rules so I feel a bit guilty, but I would totally post this score for handicap.
