I somehow had 25% recovery last night, did a 17.1 day (got the second Pfizer shot, played 18 walking), and will be really interested to see where I land tomorrow morning. I intend to stay up until I’m very tired, and then sleep in until I wake up.
Got the last minute call for a Pzifer dose 1 today.
Let’s see the whoop numbers tomorrow
I’m in the middle of a weird period with WHOOP - I haven’t been in the green in over two weeks. I’m feeling fine, and I’ve spent all but two of those days in the yellow which is fine -but I’m not pushing myself TOO hard (I probably did on my last green day which was a 90 minute Peloton ride) and my Respiratory Rate is unchanged. I’ve had occasional days with a slightly higher RHR but it’s mostly just about my HRV being relatively low relative to the prior few weeks I guess. I have been getting the same amount of sleep as normal (last night even more than normal) and working out about four-five days a week, playing golf once or twice if I’m lucky … all of this is basically the same as what I’ve been doing for the last few months. And yet my numbers are VERY low relatively speaking. Makes me really wonder how random the HRV data is.
Tomorrow I get my second Pfizer shot and I am no longer as interested in seeing what WHOOP does with it since I’m suspicious of the data it’s shown the last few weeks as is…
Exact same thing happened to me the first two weeks of this year. Yellow for 2 weeks straight. Regular exercise and sleep. I wasn’t drinking. It’s definitely a mystery whether Whoop is really good or just random at times.
They could have redid your baseline… keep in mind yellow is normal. Wish they’d change that color.
The more healthy you get. The more in theory yellow days you’ll get when it recalculates a baseline.
Yep, I’m not mad about it but it’s weird. I also wish they’d state when they have re-baselined you to set expectations. I had one drink yesterday but otherwise was a fairly normal day (I don’t drink much) and I’m at 22% after a deep night’s sleep. Weird.
Yes 100% agree. I almost wish they added an additional recovery level. Like 75-55 or something as blue normal range.
But I don’t think they release when they recalibrate due to keeping the magic sauce behind the curtain.
@greebs we’ve already discusses that I’m suspicious of their recovery method. To me it makes no sense to base recovery off 5 minutes of sleep, especially when if you change your sleep time by a couple minutes it’ll recalculate using a different 5 minutes to calculate even though it’s described as the last 5 minutes of deep sleep. The last 5 minutes should not change.
My pattern of recovery scores also makes no sense. As i said to you before, Friday i awoke at 30%, did a huge bike workout then walked 18 and the next day i was at 64%. Took that day to recover including doing such a light workout whoop didn’t register it and i went down to 30% the next day. Went for a 50 mile bike ride anyway and the next day i was at 61%.
There was very little variation in my sleep or eating and the only day i hydrated poorly was friday while golfing.
The recovery score seems to be a random number generator except for when things are really bad, it can detect that.
I got my Pfizer1 Monday morning. 94% recovery this morning.
Just a sore arm so far.
Yep. That’s what I said up above.
I’m more and more suspicious of the Whoop. I’m closer and closer to just not caring about the rest of the 18 months I’ve got.
My days are pretty similar. It’s accurately detecting sleep, and my heart rate, but… I’ve made the random number generator joke in this topic before, I think. (post #1733)
BTW, 22% with 4:49 of sleep the night after my second Pfizer shot, and I felt fine. Played another 18.
I’m assuming y’all aren’t expecting the algorithm to tell you how you should feel or are you?
I feel like the criticisms are valid, but also kind of miss the forest for the trees kinda sorta.
Not so much how I feel (though when it gives me a red score and I feel great I won’t pretend it’s not surprising) but just that similar behavior, sleep, exercise, etc., leads to a massive disparity in scores which makes me wonder what variable in their algorithm is so sensitive
If I remember correctly from pods and articles, it all measures relatively amongst itself and then against baselines which is what can cause swings like that. Another reason I’ve read and seems they tend to say to not overanalyze individual instances too much and try instead to take a wide and long view of things.
Also the technology is still very imprecise as in all optical readers so sometimes shit readings happen.
I think their journal is lacking some things and details that would maybe make things more useful but also maybe not as it’s just additional variables to incorporate.
Then again, maybe it’s all bullshit!
40% recovery yesterday. Did a hard bike workout (6x4 minutes at vO2 max zone), hit 35 balls on the range and played 9 holes (35mph winds, was a “fun” round in a way).
Today my recovery is green at 67%.
It makes no sense
We say it makes no sense but there might be something behind it. On days I fully rest and do absolutely nothing other than take the dog for a lap around the block my recovery aren’t usually in the green. Compared to days when I build around an 8 strain but take the day off from weightlifting I am usually in the green.
Whoop has me thinking some about off days. I don’t want to turn into a “no days off” gui but moreso about active recovery.
I’m in the same camp with having a string of yellow recoveries right at the start of the year. Lately, it’s been alternating between yellow and green for the most part.
Anytime I notice a weird string of yellow recoveries, I always take a step back and look at any lifestyle changes I may have made inadvertently: Did I eat a late meal? Am I not drinking enough water? Did I look at my phone too much the night before? Are my sleep/wake times consistent? Am I stressed at work?
You all may do this too, but most times this helps me decipher what may be going on outside of my normal workout/activity routine.
Day 2 after Pfizer. This is what I expect. Had a sore arm all day yesterday and randomly tired around 6pm. Was a tough scene. Feeling better today. Tomorrow we should be back
That implies that your recovery is how you felt yesterday, not how you feel today… no?
Recovery is basically how well you recover in your sleep, so if you’re feeling good, recoveries should generally be high, right?
Better timeline. I’m in a state doing age based vaccinations. I’m too young currently for the age, but I was on a overflow/no show call list.
I believe whoop’s “day” starts with a recovery.
I received a call Tuesday to get Pfizer dose 1, then went to the gym.
Wednesday: Had 55% recovery Tuesday night/Wednesday morning. I had a tough time sleeping (new baby) and felt good that morning. Over time I had pretty general arm soreness (comparable to a TDAP shot). Went to the range, hit a few balls. About 630 I was ready to sleep on the couch. Got a second wind and continued my normal routine.
Thursday: 20% recovery; what I actually expected post vaccine. Today my arm soreness is greatly improved. I’m just tired, shout out new born. I’m expected a return to normal numbers tomorrow (tonights sleep)
Assuming, different strokes for different folks, took a bit longer for it to get pumping through my body? Either way, 1-2 days of recovery post vaccine, I’m okay with. Figured I’d just share some numbers.
