I dunno, man.
Yeah. Exactly. They try to pick a consistent time across inconsistent people. So they use body measurements to try to best guess when you record HRV for evaluation using that 5 minutes of perceived SWS cycle. And even changing the window yo collect HRV from 5 minimum forward or backwards can change it a lot because it’s a highly volatile and highly sensitive variable for the formula they use.
At least that’s how I’m taking it.
I took it as “changing when you woke up by five minutes shouldn’t change the SWS cycle much at all (it occurred hours earlier), so I have no idea what Whoop is doing.”
They did say “typically” though.
I’m starting to come around to @iacas point of view, and am considering not renewing.
I’ll preface this by saying that I’m overweight, out of shape and work a desk job - so the only strain I’ve been getting is on the golf course.
I started feeling poor on 4/6 and tested positive for COVID on 4/7. My recovery scores starting 4/6 are as follows:
94, 69, 98, 85, 95, 96, 81, 96, 65 and 75. Only one day not in the green. My average recovery score is in the 50-60% range.
Respiratory rate was below average 4/8 - 4/11, then back in the normal range.
HRV has been well above average (9 points) during COVID as well.
Maybe if I was asymptomatic I could get on board, but I’ve been down for the count and just started feeling human late this afternoon. Very odd.
With that said, I’ve been under ZERO stress during this, I’ve pretty much slept/rested the overwhelming majority of the day - could stress play THIS much of a role?
Interestingly, I went back and looked — my HRV after the 4.08am wake-up was 48. Now, after the additional hour and the 6.40 wake-up it’s 64.
I had assumed HRV was a duration-of-sleep data, but I take it now that it’s set by your HRV at the end of your night’s sleep?
I had a 17.3 strain day yesterday. It included 90 minutes of very hard bike riding and a range session. Also a stressful work day and a kid who woke up 6 times during the night.
My recovery increased from yesterday morning. This thing is crap on the recovery score. Good at other things, but the recovery is stupid.
IIRC it’s “typically” set from the last five minutes of your “deep sleep” phase. Which is why I wondered why editing my sleep that one day.
IIRC also, what had happened was:
- I woke up on my own and watched a few minutes of TV.
- I actually got up, but edited the end of my sleep time by 10 minutes or whatever.
- My last deep sleep (and hence the last five minutes of deep sleep) had occurred hours before, and shouldn’t have affected my HRV or “recovery” score.
I could edit the time back and forth and the scores and numbers would change.
Again, I think the strain numbers are fine. Heart rate, respiratory rate perhaps, sleep data itself… fine. Recovery, random number generator.
P.S. 150 HRV, 93% today. Might be my highest HRV ever.
I had my second Moderna dose yesterday (Thursday) morning.
I did weightlifting Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday.
Walked 18 Thursday evening. Was feeling pretty low on gas as you might expect.
Tough night of sleep last night. In bed around 10:30. Whoop auto detect had me awake at 12:48am. Initial recovery score was 1%. I noticed just the 22% sleep and since I actually got up out of bed around 8am, I edited the end time for sleep to 8am. Still a 1%.
Maybe some of you Whoop just hates, but for me it definitely seems to be reasonably accurate.
I’m with you on this. Have been wearing it since last September and can’t really think of a time where I didn’t agree with my recovery score.
I’m also wondering if I’m doing something somewhat right, because in my 199 day streak, I’ve only had 3 red recoveries.
Careful, if you guys make one more positive post about recovery scores Beetlejuice might come out.
There’s something weird going on. I got 9.6 strain during my drive to work… 20 minutes.
Road rage?
Nope. I drive a stick but the drive was totally fine.
You must have been really jamming out
Does your car look like this??
If you kept your whoop hand on the stick the vibration that might have tricked Whoop into thinking there was strain
Great content. Advances the discussion. But only one like, awwww, poor HO.
Whoop (recovery) sucks, but not as much as you. Maybe you can google “penis bat signals” some more?
You often bring this up as if you do anything but blow self important hot air on every topic you jump in.
We doing likes as some kind of measuring stick of quality or what did you wanna use them for?
2, I don’t know anything about whoop but I’m always interested in a good “greatest hits compilation” post.
