Whatcha Reading?

Shit, now I gotta add another streaming subscription

Finished The Bone Ships by RJ Barker, which I loved, as well as Magpie Murders as a fun change of pace. I dropped Say Nothing after the first third cause it was sooo heavy and sad. Will have an upcoming trip to Ireland in the next few months and will put it back in my hands

Had no idea this was happening. Was blown away by the book.

Pun intended??

When I was in grade school I got hooked on Perry Mason mysteries, and I think I know someone else who got hooked as well: David Rosenfelt. I’ve listened to 14 Andy Carpenter mysteries in the last two weeks, and I love them. I haven’t seen a paper copy but I imagine they’re about 300 pages.

The performer of the audiobooks is outstanding.

Ran through City in Ruins in a day and a half on vacation. I’ll miss the Danny Ryan trilogy.

Just finished “The Indifferent Stars Above: The Harrowing Story of the Donner Party”. Excellent read. Brutal story.

After several podcasts got me interested (Joe Rogan, Jack Carr, etc.) I finally just started Nuclear War by Annie Jacobson. Several chapters in and it’s worth it so far.

The legend himself, Dan Carlin, had her on his “Hardcore history Addendum” recently. Have this on my short list

Finished two books this past weekend:

The Bands of Mourning by Brandon Sanderson (Wax and Wayne #3). Sanderson continues to not disappoint.

10:04 by Ben Lerner. I saw it on the recent NY Times top 100 of the 21st century list, and I enjoyed his The Topeka School. I did not enjoy this. I may not have been smart enough to really “get” it.

The Wax and Wayne stuff was probably my least favorite Cosmere series (between the OG Mistborn and Stormlight Archive), but in the end, I’m glad I read it. The callbacks continue, and the investment in the characters pays off.

Hear me out.

I’m currently reading Paris Hilton’s memoir at the recommendation of two women in my family. It doesn’t suck.

I’m not saying you should immediately pick it up to read, but I’m just saying if you want to try something new, this isn’t what I expected it to be.

I know she talks about her time at the “boarding schools” which were mostly just psychological abuse camps. I heard about it initially (and somewhat unexpectedly) through a person I follow in the IT twitter world. She attended one of the schools with Paris that was later brought under scrutiny and ended up meeting her and others when that was in the news a few years ago. I remember thinking about Paris a little different after that revelation.

Yeah, I just read that part of the book. Didn’t know that and hadn’t heard of the schools, but from how she describes, it was awful and had a terrible impact on her.

Also, she talks very openly about her ADHD

Oh yeah, I listened to that one too.

Enjoyed the show (somewhat) trying to get through Fire and Blood right now, man this has started out like reading a history book in class.

Going to power through but was hoping for something more…novel-esq.

Nope, it’s basically a historical re-telling of the lineage. Interesting but can be pretty dull

I felt the same way. I know I read it but I don’t remember a thing bc I was so turned off by the textbook-like writing. Obviously not nerdy enough to appreciate all of that (as I start a re-read of the Stormlight Archives)

LOL I was actually just thinking I could go for a Stormlight refresh after this :joy:

Especially the names for F&B is soooo difficult to keep up with.

Finished The Wolf by Leo Carew. Really enjoyed this political and military oriented fantasy. showing a lot of potential for the future books in the series. Would recommend for people who like Malazan, Abercrombie, Brian Lee Durfee, etc.

Finally starting The Name of the Rose which I’ve been meaning to read for the last few years.
