All of you dumb sickos that I meet each time I venture outside the borders of Montana on yet another golf trip.

Thankful for all of the experiences I’ve gone through this year since finding NLU Last October/November
- First roost event at Olde Barnstable
- Joining a Bandon trip 3 weeks before wheels up because of the people I met at that first event
- Traveling to Wisconsin for the first time and joining a bunch of insane people playing 72 holes over 2 days at Lawsonia
- Playing Erin Hills with some of those same sickos
- Playing some of the best courses in New England and planning more rounds
- Getting the opportunity to go to the NIT in Frisco. I considered myself so lucky that weekend and it was truly one of my favorite weekends ever. Shoutout Yeti cart
- Posting 50+ rounds in one season while playing at least 20 more that don’t get posted.
This community has truly changed my life in the best way. I started 2023 by getting laid off in January, not knowing what I was gonna do. Golf really became my escape, like many others, and I want to say thank you to everyone for being part of it.

Had a random pairing three years ago that turned out to not be random- found out the of my friends from church also played golf and we’ve gotten really close since then. It was a serendipitous life-chambers that wouldn’t have happened if not for golf.

I’m thankful to the Refuge for helping me find a community and a joy to the game I haven’t felt in years. For the first time in what seems like forever I’ve had a desire to practice, a reason to look forward to playing golf, and a genuine enthusiasm once out there. I played in 6 different NLU/Roost events this year and it was awesome getting to know the faces and personalities behind the names. I also would have never dreamed that I would cross state lines from IL to WI 3 different times in 2023 to play golf with some fellow sickos I met online, but I’m sure glad I did.
I even got to play with @Tron at Erin Hills, which is a definitely a pinch me moment and so far the highlight of my time on the Refuge!

I’m thankful for the connections I’ve made on here. Never had a bad round with anyone I’ve met on the refuge.
I’m thankful that I get to take my Son out and teach him the game. I hope he looks back on it as fondly as I look back at all the rounds I played with my Dad before he passed.

Thankful for this community and my Dry Heat hitters. Thankful for the Monday Zoom crew. It’s been a ton of fun hopping on every week to put some faces to names and seeing which direction the conversations go that week. Shameless plug to join us Monday nights at 9 pm ET.
Thankful to doctors who keep fixing my body and allow me to play golf. Hopefully 2024 is finally the year I can play a full year.
Thankful for places and people golf can connect us with. Thankful for Thankful for munis and the City of Phoenix card that allows me to afford to play as much golf as I do. Thankful for the human brain that allows me to buy into the delusion that one day I’ll figure this game out.
Thankful for Fargiveness (somehow this is unironic as the Stealth 2 has revolutionized my game off the tee). But seriously, thankful for OEM marketing teams that continue to come up with easy-to-make-fun-of slogans. Thankful for pampered fucks who don’t know how to keep their mouths shut and keep delivering that sweet, sweet content.

Thankful for the 2023 Ryder Cup and having an event like that come back in full force. It’s very easy to say that “it just means more,” when talking about it, but witnessing (most) players and all of those fans actually be about it did enough to crack open some calcifications that the rest of the pro game and the adjacent, constant discourse has helped build up and leave behind.
It isn’t a feeling that is going to last, but it is amazing to be reminded that there will always be openings where it’s both okay and necessary to absorb those strong feelings in that moment and have it sustain you going forward.

All of the stupid bits that have made me enjoy the game more - blades, 56* sand wedge, self rollback, proper length inseams, cheap sun sleeves, CarryNostras, Team Maxfli, etc - have come from the Refuge. So uh thanks. Really.

- The endless difficulty.
- Getting to spend time with my daughter on the course, at the range, or just with something else to talk about.
- My students and many of my fellow professionals.
- GCA (architecture, not atlas
) - The new courses I added to my list this year

Thankful that golf is an overwhelming force for self-improvement in my life. It has led me to try to weigh less, lift more, sleep better, and to plan.

Four years ago I was playing golf but had no one or group to play with, so to make a long story short, I quit playing. About a year ago I was asked by an old friend to come out and join him for a round of golf at the Jax Beach Muni and for the first time in awhile I was looking forward to getting out and playing. As you can imagine, I played horribly, however, was introduced to some guys who were part of this group called No Laying Up and I decided to join them every Thursday for the Jax Beach game. My first few months were hard, however, just over a year later I am back to a single digit handicap and have played in a few of our local roost events here in Florida. Thankful for the Splash of OJ, Palmetto Golf Society, and the whole No Laying Up community.

Thankful to the game for keeping me and my brother close. With a decent age gap and being in different places in life - golf has kept us close through playing and traveling to tournaments and building our friend group from the same.
We wouldn’t be estranged by any means, but I’m thankful we always have this connection and there’s always something going on that we’re both involved in.
