Vibestock (Southern Pines, NC): 2021, October 2 - Longleaf Golf and Family Club

Crushed to have to drop from the event. A Member/Guest I play in every year was moved from June to this same weekend. So I’ll be vibing from across the border in C-Ville/the land of @JohnP. I look forward to catching y’all’s vibes from afar. @Fluff I removed my name from slot 79 but didn’t want to mess with the alternate list. Congrats on whoever moves up. @CrucialTaunt did the same for PN lodging. All star cast of residents there that I hate to miss that scene.

I am not trying to offend anyone or any prior event, BUT…having looked at the list of attendees, this is a tour de force roster. All Star game of All Star games. The wait list alone is off the charts.

Vibe away.

I can be convinced to give up my spot at 19 because I’m showing up and playing golf that morning list or no list.

Just realized this is the same weekend as my brothers wedding, I doubt he’ll care if the best man isn’t there but probably for the best I have to bail… removed myself from the spreadsheet

Just popping in here for a quick story/endorsement: last weekend 3 buddies and I were at an event at Tobacco Road that ended Sunday morning. We had a Monday round booked in Southern Pines so we went to grab lunch at Pinehurst #2. Being the sickos that we are (having already played about 80 holes the past couple days- the TR event was unlimited play) we mindlessly checked GolfNow and saw a twilight rate available at Longleaf. Instead of playing around on Thistle Dhu or exploring the resort, an hour later we were on the first tee at LL with no idea what to expect.

We only played the front but I couldn’t have been more pleasantly surprised. At one point (the reveal of 5th tee) one buddy actually said ‘wait, is this Augusta National?’ Longleaf was (for me prior to this trip, at least) entirely overshadowed by the abundance of elite golf in the area, but it was a beautiful evening walk through the woods, in great shape and with exceptional shot variety and quality.

Sorry for rambling a bit, but I think the context helps to put a fine point on how in a weekend with an excess of elite golf courses, Longleaf Golf AND FAMILY Club managed to be memorable as a pleasant surprise that blew away expectations.

A second trip across the country for NC golf in 5 months isn’t in the cards, otherwise I’d put myself on the wait list, but it made me happy to see that there is an NLU event at this overshadowed gem. Wishing you gents a great time.

Cross posting this in here. Any info on Longlead being booked already for 6/12? No times available the entire weekend…

@rkris could help enlighten you. My guess is a USKids tournament.

@DJsCokeDealer: yup, summer is prime junior tournament season. I seem to remember that the weekend you are referring to is the USKG State Invitational. USKG Red, White, and Blue National Invitational is July 4th weekend, and then of course the Worlds are late July and the entire town is bedlam.

Luckily, there is so much golf within 45 minutes we can still play plenty of golf. And even though some members moan a bit about being locked out all weekend, nobody complains when there’s enough cash to just up and rebuild a dozen tee boxes because some experimental zoysia didn’t work.

Thanks for the info. Where else would you recommend trying to play as a budget friendly 2nd 18 after TR in the morning

Quail Ridge is close to TR and it is a Maples Design with some cool holes. Its got a wonky stretch on the back, but overall is good Mom-n-Pop operation and in pretty good shape.

Hyland is another locals favorite and NC group chat folks love it, I rank it a step below LL and a step above Quail Ridge.

Whispering Pines-Pines Course (another Maples) can be good too; double check because I know they are doing a bunch of renovations this summer and I’m not sure how it’ll effect play.

Finally, and I’m throwing this out there because you’ll be in Sanford at TR, The Sanford Municipal’s front 9 is a Ross (and a WPA project). It is very Muni, it is short, it is quirky, but it can also be a ton of fun. I’ve walked the front side with 5 clubs while my son played a junior tournament on the back and had a blast.

If you have any problems or suggestions, feel free to write them down and shove them up your dickhole.

EDIT: Respectfully, of course.

Is the only way to book Hyland tee times by calling the shop? Or do I just not know how to navigate their website?

Calling is your best bet.
