Iā€™m just going by the GPS course map. We talking a flat 225ish carry?

Yeah 225 carry, probably closer to 235+ on a good line. Could be different depending on the teams. Iā€™m just getting the trash talk stared.

Note: 8 has my number and I lay up too much lol.

If any locals have a minute to share some thoughts on Aguila, we first timers would love to hear about the course! I cruised through a GPS tour a few times and it looks really fun. Iā€™m not a short hitter and even still it looks like a place where you would want to hit driver a lot. Several holes where you can take on a fairway bunker to shorten the approach or go for a par five in two. The most provocative is #6 below: a very linksy hole design for the middle of the desert.

Six is a great hole. The fairway runs downhill after that bunker and the green is multi-tiered. Do not want to be above the hole there at any cost. Can also play the mega angle into the fifth fairway (I do this unintentionally pretty frequently).

With the exception of a couple holes, you can usually miss on one side off the tee and be totally fine. All about missing on the correct side. Some of the desert is playable but there are plenty of hills and valleys that can kick balls into unplayable/in findable spots on some holes. The greens are generous enough in size and almost all generally slope back to front. I havenā€™t played there in quite a while, so not sure what the green speeds are like rn. The green surrounds are pretty undulating. Lots of uneven lies which makes it fun. Wouldnā€™t say the surrounding undulated are too extreme though. Just adds intrigue.

6 is the hardest hole on the course in my opinion. Itā€™s a perfect hole in that there will be a shot at some point you wonā€™t want to hit. Option one, lay back off the tee and hit anywhere short and left of the bunker, but that leaves you a really tough approach, likely an uneven lie to a two tiered green from a bad angle. Option two is the hard tee shot, carry the bunker into a narrowing and sloping fairway that wants you to land a big cut into a tight window, still leaving an awkward uphill wedge shot.

I love the hole. Itā€™s unique and slots into the perfect spot into the routing on the front 9.

Iā€™ll add, the front 9 is incredible. 1, 4, 6, 8 and 9 are wildly different Par 4ā€™s, each ask totally different questions and each are great golf holes. 2 is the weakest hole on the front but even still usually offers some good strategy options on your second and third shots.

The closing stretch of 14-18 is a better than average finishing set. 18 demands a great tee shot to have a good look on the approach, 17 is reachable and a mirror of a hole to 8, 16 is a hard long-ish par 3, 15 is the narrowest par 5 on the course with a tough green site if you arenā€™t on the surface, and 14 is a tricky par 4.

The holes 10-14 switchback through a section of the property that can feel a bit repetitive, but the holes offer different challenges including a simple but difficult short par 3.

I love the course, if you couldnā€™t tell. In an architecturally bankrupt region it punches way above its class and is more intriguing to play than 90% of the $150+ courses in the valley.

My strategy on 6 definitely changes depending on what tee box they have the tees on. If itā€™s back like you have shown on your picture, Iā€™ll hit it to about 200 to 215. If we get lucky and they move them up. Itā€™s a lot easier to carry the bunker.

I am not a fan of trying to carry the bunker with a 3W or Driver the landing zone is far too tight. Miss right and it feeds into a bunch of trees where you are dead. Left is more trees or the par 3 tee box which you will have to hit a nippy wedge over a bunker that stops.

I have played the way right ball from 5 fairway and itā€™s a very good spot. Takes the bunker out of play. You just canā€™t miss short, when short is the play.

@KMola14 am I following correctly that you found a partner to fill in?

I donā€™t want to completely ruin things but it may be in my best interest to drop outā€¦I almost completely forgot (or more accurately, it completely snuck up on me) that my wife is out of town for a Vegas bachelorette party this weekend. I can lean on the in-laws for help with Stellaā€¦but would feel terrible being gone literally all day (why itā€™s different than if my wife had to, no comment at this time).

In short: I can make this work, if needed, but if a drop and reshuffle could be easyā€¦Iā€™d appreciate it
