Interesting, and I could see that but LA is so spread out that I just havent been able to immerse myself in the food scene on work trips there as I have in SF

We all know how I feel but the disrespect for Missouri is out of control. James Beard winning chefs, incredibly low cost of living… incredibly low, amazing hospital systems, one of the only states that has a dedicated conservation tax (raising roughly $100 million dollars a year), Boeing, two federal reserve banks, the first federally recognized American Viticultural Area in June 1980 - eight months before Napa, the only state that borders 8 other states, sliced bread was invented in Missouri, highest firework purchasing in the country by capita and meth if you’re nasty, beer etc.

I love the Bay Area but can’t say it is better than NYC. Been in the Bay Area for 15+ years and before that was in nyc for 7.
I’ve felt that the average food (sandwich, salad) is better in SF than NYC, because the ingredients are better/fresher.
But at the higher end nyc is much better. Also, for specific cuisines, nyc is far better. Thai food in SF and the Bay Area is bad, while NYC has a a good one in every neighborhood.
Hard to find good Italian food in SF, while nyc has them everywhere. Sometimes I just want a good comforting chicken parm 
. Also pizza in nyc is much better.
Indian food if you only include SF isn’t that great compared to nyc, but if you include the Bay Area, it might just beat it out. My Asian friends tell me nyc Chinatown is much better than the SF one, but I don’t have a strong view on that.
Mexican food is of course much better in the Bay Area.
Also bakeries in SF aren’t as great as nyc. I don’t want fruit tarts, I want some good cake, preferably chocolate 
And as someone else said, LA is definitely better than SF, when it comes to high end dining.

NY is the top tier food city. Not close.
Chicago is on the next tier with LA and SF. But I do think Chicago is better because of the density, you don’t need to drive all the way across the metro area like LA.
The next tier is probably 10+ cities deep, lots of places doing cool stuff these days

My crack at this tier is New Orleans, Vegas, Portland, SD, Seattle, DC, Phoenix, Houston, Miami? (Maybe? Never been). Probably throw a couple others in there I haven’t been to.
i think that’s about right. and actually as you lay them out, i’ll probably say that tier three is new orleans, vegas and miami.
Feel like the Vegas food scene is just a high-end airport terminal of fancy chain restaurants from celebrity chefs (Ramsay, Boulud, Keller, etc) along the strip. If your city/state doesn’t have its own cuisine culture and dishes you are known for and you simply import it from elsewhere, do you even belong on a tier???

Personally think DCs food is pretty subpar
A former NYC resident, that chose to move to NJ, complaining about traffic in CT is like shitting your pants and microwaving fish in the office then complaining that the break room stinks.
