Trap Draw: Southern California

Who we efforted: too bad Devin Nunes couldn’t make it. Disappointing to hear there were no efforts to talk to Sumner Redstone, Harvey Weinstein, Vin Scully, Ari Emanuel, Christopher Darden, Mischa Barton, Giada de Laurentis or Randy’s boy Duncan Hunter.

God the Rome nostalgia. Could have done 3 hours on that but Travis was clearly winding down. Its probably pretty hard for people under 30 to imagine but Jim Rome was legitimately hilarious in the late 90s / early 2000s. Highlights:

  • The bit about not taking phone calls. “More of me and less of you is good for this program.” Inevitably taking a call only to deploy the EEEEEEHHHHHHHH buzzer, followed by “see, this is why I don’t take phone calls, it isn’t complicated, have a take and don’t suck, I want to include you people, I really do, but these are terrible phone calls that do not make the show better”

  • All the “complaining” about audience participation. “Don’t send me your emails.” “I’m not gonna read this email.” “Nobody wants to hear your emails.” Followed by reading the emails and feigning outrage.

  • The rivalries between callers and cities. People inevitably shitting on rust belt cities like Buffalo and Cleveland, Jim pretending to be outraged while laughing his ass off

  • Constantly replaying awful audio. The Carl Lewis national anthem comes to mind. Jim Calhoun “not a dime back.” “Boom, outta here.” The Orenthal 911 call. The Tonya Harding 911 call. “Come on over, officer!”

  • Of course, Softball Guy, Fantasy Football Draft Guy, Likes to Fight Guy, etc.

Great episode. Travis was great.

Rome is the :goat:. Thats all I got. Great pod boys

One of the best food cities in the country, and we got Apple Pan.

Things to do? “Don’t go to the Santa Monica Pier, or anything you might see on a flyover, but, um, downtown near the Staples Center has an awesome Whole Foods now.”

@Tron, should’ve been two segments. This guy could tell you about Rome, and then I could’ve gotten you Grace, Shel, and Bev, my playing partners the other day from Laguna Beach to tell you about SoCal.

I’ve only been to LA a couple times, mostly passing thru. Whats the story on Tommy Burger? Is it even worth a mention to visitors?

Tommy’s is fine. It’s for people who love to slather chili on their greasy food.

The best L.A. fast food burger mini-chain is Astro Burger, though.

The best part? The tour goes back to LA in February for Riviera, so plenty of opportunity to do that then. Gotta leave some bullets in the chamber bud!

If Ralph’s doesn’t get its due that time around, I’m burning this place down.

My dad only occasionally listened to Rome, but I have concrete memories of listening to him in the car one day. It was right before he was having some kind of event in KC. I remember the entire car trip was nothing but callers from KC and St. Louis bitching at each other.

Who is Layla on VPR, @Randy? I don’t know of a Layla.

I do know who Lala is though

Started listening to Rome on the night show falling asleep when I was in elementary school. I was a massive fan in my teenage years. Rome making fun of Hacksaw will never not be funny to me.

T-Rodg getting fired was after I drifted away and had stuff going on during the day. T-Rodg seemed like the BaBaBooey to Stern for Rome. He always came off as a good guy.

@Tron mentioning the Costa Mesa muni (they call it Costa Mesa country club) got my attention. I live in east side Costa Mesa. That course is not bad but the round times are brutal. It’s 6 hour rounds always.

My father in law is a member of the private club right up the road from there called Mesa Verde. Great club, can always get a game, fun vibe.

Anyone else just fire this back up after this afternoon’s fun?
