Been there twice. Once for work and once to visit my brother who was doing a 1 year animation gig. Took a side trip to Bali. I also have a good friend who teaches at the American school that was mentioned in the pod.
Expensive as all get out though. I think we were spending $17 a pop for Tiger Beer.
Agreed, big miss on Crazy Rich Asians! Living away from home in Australia now, it truly did evoke a ton of homesickness watching it.
As someone who spent the first 20 years my life growing up in Singapore, was cool to hear Mark cover all the highlights fairly accurately. Would have been interesting to hear them delve a little deeper into conscription/national service, geo-political tensions etc, but there’s always next time.
On the golf front, Nirwana Bali was my favorite course growing up; got to play it quite a few times on holiday and loved it every time. The place is/was spectacular, Greg Norman design, right on the ocean, a Balinese temple right off the coast, rice terraces everywhere (snakes too).
If I’m not wrong, a certain former US president bought the property and hotel, and Phil Mickelson was rumored to be redoing the course, but to my knowledge nothing has come of it yet, which is a huge shame.
Was a very ambient listen until the the hijacking content.
What!?!? Sick!!!
Guest seems like the kind of guy with some incredible stories to tell but who doesn’t share unless directly asked. Pretty solid flex with the 2nd home in Bali.
For the F1 fans among us, behold probably the greatest lap anyone has ever driven around the Singapore GP circuit, this is as close to perfect as it gets
Great Pod guys, the hijack story was not one I expected to hear, so thanks for sharing!
Singapore is awesome, have been several times and was supposed to be there last year again until, you know. And, marks recommendation for Da Nang in Vietnam, I second that - have said before there is a whole tourist sauce series in that spot alone.
Ah, Singapore: The opposite end of the Malay peninsula from the best food in Asia.
(I married into a Peranakan family, and my MiL is from Penang, so I’ve been told I’m legally obligated to pick this fight).
(Except chili crab, Singapore does that better.)
This was a great Trap Draw. One of my closest friends from college went to Singapore for business school 21 years ago and never left. He loves it there, and I can understand why. Influenced by his work and education in Singapore, he came up with the most important rule of work negotiations I have ever heard:
“Never directly say no to a job or contract, simply quote them a price commensurate with your level of aggravation at doing it.”
Fantastic episode. I visited Singapore with my wife a couple years ago and it instantly became my favorite place I’ve ever visited. Agree with a lot of what has already been said, but just want to plug Henderson Waves as a really neat piece of infrastructure
an army of barrel of flocks of monkeys came at us – not aggressively, mind you – crossing the HW bridge in the middle of a client shoot i had there.
