Love that the Sea Isle podcast turned into the Minnesota/Iowa podcast for a few minutes. Also really enjoyed some hockey talk. Need more of it.

Always good to hear from another Northern Iowa Alum. I found out a month or two ago that a guy I play golf with a couple times a year was the grad assistant for the golf team at UNI when panther mike was a freshman so kind of a small world.

I’ve been absent from here for a few weeks, but Randy stated there had been some drama on here recently. I want to sink my teeth into this, can anyone point me to the thread/threads he might have been alluding to?

if you dare

What a delight listening to Panther Mike today. I’ve only had a brief encounter with him, but I can attest he is genuine and a true #classact. I had no idea he’s at Seminole now. Quite the career already for someone his age!

He is also a mini Panther Chris. Met him at the Sea Island pro shop, and when he said he was from Brainerd, I immediately knew he was a Foley.

It’s been mentioned a few times in pods, and I searched the refuge and didn’t see it so I’ll ask here.

Hey @Tron or @MerchCzar: Can we get Mama Schuster’s brunswick stew recipe? I’ve never had it and after the googling I want to try to whip some up.

For all those asking, here’s Peg Schuster’s famous Brunswick stew recipe:

Now important to note a few tweaks I’ve made over the last 10 years.

  1. Canned pork/beef has always freaked me out (for some reason I have now problem with canned chicken), so I now substitute a pound of ground turkey in place of the Castleberry pork, and a 1/4 to 1/2 a bottle of barbaque sauce (last night I used Montgomery Inn’s classic BBQ sauce)
  2. I also cook 2-3 hot Italian sausage in a pan after the ground beef and ground turkey and chop those up into little piece to add some chunkiness to the stew (my Mom hates that I do this).
  3. For Spicy Ketchup, I usually get the Siracha or Tabasco Heinz option at the store. I usually end up working in some Tabasco as well because I love spice
  4. I like to “Choose my own adventure” with the diced tomatoes. Sometimes I get the cans that are spiced or have green chilis/peppers already mixed in to add a little extra flare to the stew.
  5. If you don’t have a crock pot, you can cook it in a big pot on low for 3 hours. Just make sure it doesn’t burn and stir every 15-30 minutes!
  6. End of the day, get disruptive and make it your own baby!

Here’s last nights ingredients and final product:

I think the boys got out over their skis talking about mafia structure when neither has seen the godfather for gods sake Randy couldn’t even say consigliere properly.

Guys,

I was raised in Cedar Falls, IA and my dad taught at Northern Iowa for 40+ years. I learned the game at Pheasant Ridge public golf course from when I was 9 years old where the head pro was Panther Mike’s golf coach, John Bermel, and is the home course of the UNI Panther golf team (personal best 68 from the back tees!). John gave me my first ever golf lesson when I was 25. He’s an amazing teacher and a great player in his own right.

First of all, I will not let @Randy @Tron bastardize Iowa geography. Cedar Falls is most definitely Northeast Iowa. There’s nothing north of the Cedar Falls/Waterloo metroplex, unless you are counting Mason City, but who would do that?

Second, PantherMike is absolutely correct about Hy-Vee: a supermarket menace. My favorite T-shirt (s/o Field of Dreams):

PantherMike, if you are ever in Ann Arbor, MI please drop me a line. Would love to take you out to play. Randy and Tron have already been invited.

Finally, it was a great pod as always. Keep up the great work guys.

As a former resident of Mitchell County, Iowa I take umbrage to this.

Hahahaha. No offense implied. I have some great memories of swim meets and playing football up in Mason City. Great town.

The only take I have is saying Harris Teeter is a combo of Publix and Whole Foods might be the most aggregious thing I have ever heard. There are nice HT scattered about but otherwise I wouldn’t set foot in one.

No offense taken.

Although I bet when you posted that you didn’t expect someone to chirp up for the honor of North Central Iowa.

Indeed not! But I’m so glad you did. Love my home state, warts and all.

Great to see John mentioned. I got a lesson or two from him when I was in high school. He grew up in my hometown and I played high school golf with his nephew. His 80ish year old dad and his brother play in our Wednesday night men’s league still.

That’s fantastic. Small world. He sold me my first set of players Irons when I was good enough to play them. John was really good to my Dad who still lives in Cedar Falls.

Just wanted to reach out. I currently live in CF and play pheasant all the time. I am also the high school golf coach and have formed a great relationship with John Bermel. Perusing the refuge I was so excited to see a fellow Iowan let alone a Cedar Falls native. Just wanted to reach out and say hello.

@Tron @Randy Update on the capsized cargo ship in Brunswick. They’re starting to slice her open, fascinating stuff.
