As a recent OSU alum who never even stepped foot in the state until dorm move in day, I look back at Columbus and definitely have a great appreciation for the place. Love going back to visit for a football game, a ton of great bars and restaurants. Very underrated city.
The problem with the fan base seems to be that the crazies and irrational didn’t actually attend the school. People get way to invested at times (myself included) and OSU football is basically life or death for some of these people. Walking out of the 2015 Mich State upset I saw a college age kid crying on the sidewalk, that’s what we’re talking about here. Admittedly, when you’re apart of it and have a connection to the school its hard to not get caught up in it.
@Soly explaining the Ohio natives absolute hatred for Michigan made me smile. Lastly, I went into this knowing @Tron was going to rip us apart. I do want to thank him for shitting all over Buckeye Guy and Big Nut, fuck those guys.

Listen, fer sure, Michigan sucks on the football field right now.
But at least we didn’t hire a wife-beater or have a current United States Congressman cover up years of sexual abuse.

Since your a Michigan fan it brings immense happiness to me that one of the most satisfying things you’ve ever watched is Ohio State lose. I would assume ideally it would be watching Michigan win a Natty but…

I’m certainly never going to defend Urban Meyer or Jim Jordan. But let’s not overlook Michigan’s militia population if we’re looking at each state’s flaws…not to mention Larry Nassar (yes, he’s MSU’s embarrassment, but same state).
I’m not a diehard Buckeye fan. I was growing up, but I lost interest in college football back in the mid-90s. It was enjoyable seeing Ohio State beat Alabama and then win a national championship in 2015.

Oh hey, this isn’t a state thing. This is a school thing. The large militia population in the state of Michigan can go fly a kite.

Fair enough. Then let’s focus on this — I played the Scarlet course during football games. In Ann Arbor (which is a lovely place, for the record), they part cars on the UM course.
I also don’t agree that Jack ruined the Scarlet course. He was tasked with updating and producing a tough, tournament course. In that sense he succeeded.

Jack Nicklaus didn’t butcher the UM course though, so Michigan has that going for them, which is nice.

For the record, I would probably fall into the irrational fan side of things. I grew up with Michigan basketball season tickets but opted not to go to school there (yes, I was accepted, but a scholarship offer elsewhere lured me away).
I really don’t care that much, but I do enjoy the back and forth that a good college rivalry brings out.
I don’t mind Jack’s work on the Scarlet course. It did bother me, however, that they chose my third year of law school, when I had plenty of time to play as much golf as I wanted, to shut down the course for the renovation work.
Isn’t Michigan investigating sexual misconduct allegations against their school physician/team doctor who was employed from the 60’s until the early 2000’s…

You know what else sucks about Ohio State slappys? They still fucking talk about Woody Hayes, a psychopathic bullying monster, like a deity. The guy punched an opposing player on the god damn field.

There was a documentary on HBO about the Michigan/Ohio State football rivalry that you can find on Youtube. I enjoy the outro which is just people telling all their jokes at the other schools expense:

Interesting thoughts on conference alliances.
I’m not a college football fan, but deep in college basketball. I absolutely root for conference teams outside of playing my team. The better they do helps out my team with all metrics (KenPon, NET, TRank), but the conference splits the NCAA tournament shares. So if @aannddyy00’s Blue Jay’s go deep in the tournament, even lowly DePaul gets a cut of that cash. Also, the Big East being a non-football conference needs to continue being a good conference to provide TV content that networks want to pay for. Which is an entirely different bubble that is going to likely pop soon.
Lastly, following @Tron’s statement, Wisconsin football fans are pretty terrible. Exposed every year, but yet they talk as if they have the best talent coming in year after year. The worst part of their fans is deep in the UW system. Anybody that attended to Stout, River Falls or Parkside, they claim UW-Madison as their school a well, it’s gross. The state also has a loyal state school following that borders on SEC-like obsession.

I’m really not sure which Wisconsin fans you’re finding. There are obviously shitty fans for all programs, but generally, the fan base realizes that we are a development program. Guys usually don’t come in as true freshman and contribute right away. I would also think that every program builds up their recruiting classes. It’s called hope.
As far as the Wisconsin State system schools (f them, I’m going to call them that, the only reason the name changed was to leach onto the UW name/academic brand), does it surprise you they latch onto UW? It’s the only D1 program in the state. (I would assume you’d find the same thing happening in Minnesota and Nebraska, which also don’t have other FBS teams to my memory. Maybe Rutgers too, but no one actually likes Rutgers.)
Back to the “exposed” take. There have definitely been some shitty games where they got blown out by good/great teams, or lost games they shouldn’t have. It happens. I don’t think it’s getting exposed, it’s getting shown what the team is/has been. A heavily run focused team that struggles when the other side stops option #1. (I don’t consider that getting exposed, because literally everyone knows that to be the case. We could argue the semantics of “exposed”, but it isn’t worth either of our time. I’m just providing a counterpoint to you and Tron.) The only year that I would feel differently would be the one year of Wilson.

I’ve got some scumbags at work, Stout and Platteville guys actually that get super amped on the B1G West schedule, and then come crashing back to reality. I guess that’s a bit of the unbalanced schedule effect though.
I’ve personally got no beef with Madison. It’s a tip of the cap to do as well as they do with a not great recruiting base. The ‘better than thou’ attitude when it comes to their athletics admission requirements is a bit tired and non-factual. I only see the basketball side of that though when it comes to recruiting.
