Happy to report the Alley Downtown Taproom in Aiken SC (one of those tap the wristband and pour by the ounce places) has a handle on the tipping situation.
The POS system did not ask for a tip. There was also a jar for cash tips that would be directed towards a local charitable organization. Asked an employee about it and they have been doing it since they opened., and advertise it on social media every so often
I love that pub! The original Clybourn Goose Island brewpubâs interior and bar were based on it.
Went to a butcher shop today and the pos asked for a tip. Didnât engage with anyone and just grabbed a couple burgers to cook tonight. 0 ok or am I the cat?
Them asking for a tip is outrageous.
I recently had an issue with my butcher of not only asking for a tip, but they also had a 4% service fee on credit cards. The first time, I noticed it after I got home because they didnât have anything posted about it and I didnât do the exact math on the percentage. The next time, I intentionally grabbed cash before going in and unfortunately (due to the meat being cut almost a half inch thicker than requested), still had to pay with card. They had now posted a sign saying 2.75% for the fee. Is that not a little scummy to be charging higher than posted feeâs? Also, if they are being charged 4%, I feel like they need a new POS system, because that feels ridiculously high.
It also violates their merchant agreements with credit card. What they should do is just bake those in. If you pay cash, you just pay more since youâre not getting perks.
My current tipping gripe. My team did team building today and part of that was going out to lunch. I covered it and expensed it. However I couldnât expense tip/gratuity because itâs âpersonal and discretionaryâ.
Thatâs a combo breaker

Yeah. Restaurants and stores charging credit card services fees is a whole mother gripe. If my meal/purchase cost 3% more with it being labeled as a fee, that would make me a lot happier than seeing an extra 3% being added for not carrying cash.
Thatâs insane. My company has a 15% limit, which makes me feel like a cheap ass, but at least covers a tip.
Would love for No Tippen Pippen to make a formal public speech against these POS machines. He might be the hero we all need.
Letâs say you get a job at a cool coffee shop.
Their hourly wage is $25 an hour or something (the specific amount isnât important). But itâs very clear in the shop tips are not accepted.
But every day a customer pays with a credit card and they say âoh wow I was going to leave a tip but i canâtâŚâ
How long do you stay there before bouncing thinking you could make more with the tipping culture the old way?
Now instead of a coffee shop what if itâs a restaurant or bar? I guess what Iâm trying to say is great servers or bartenders would probably try theyâre lucky with gratuity vs a flat wage right? Maybe not.
I think Tom Collichioâa restaurants in NY do no tip.
Oh shit! Is that new?
need a breakdown of the announcement video @Tron
@Tron Iâm sure youâre all over this but Uncle Juice weighing in on Murdaugh is everything I needed on a Friday morning

Danny Meyer also tried it for 5 years before abandoning it.
