How do you feel about places that do both? My club does that and more and more local places are doing it. They add on a surcharge and also ask for a tip. I literally have no fucking clue where any of my money is going, but I know I’m paying a lot more for it than I use to.

I literally had a conversation with my wife last weekend about if this was still a thing. It seems like now when you pull up to gas stations all the vehicles are facing the same way.

I’m not sure I follow. What is the surcharge for in this case? Like a built in tip and option to tip more?

The devil is in the details generally. There’s a high end restaurant in my city that has a note on their menu saying no tipping is required because they pay a good salary and benefits to all employees (and that is reflected in the price of the meal)

Places are starting to charge a surcharge (usually 15%-20%) that they add to the total. They say it is because they pay their staff a living wage and this surcharge is used to help fund that. But they also ask you for a tip and it’s generally expected that you tip. So basically when I go to my club I’m adding 15% to to everything I order so that the staff can make something like $15-$20/hour. Then I’m also supposed to tip 20% on top of all that. To me that’s bullshit.

Also of note, if you see ā€œsurchargeā€ or something like that on your bill, that is going to the owner as revenue. If it says ā€œtipā€ or ā€œgratuityā€ then by law it is supposed to go to the staff.

Interesting. I’d rather they drop the surcharge and just reflect their costs in the price.

My two cents on the POS systems like Square and Clover: they are storing my information (e.g., my email and credit card info are linked because it [sometimes] prompts me to choose a digital receipt to my email that is already populated), so I should be able to create a profile with them with an option to set an automatic preferred tip percentage. I get that I’m not really their customer, but maybe offer consumers that option for some nominal monthly fee? They already have all the info, seems like free money lying around for them.

So, to recap:

  • Krispy Kreme donuts are wildly overrated, unless they’re hot and fresh and you’re as baked as @Double_Bogey_Dave in college. I also agree with the +1 to apple fritters and I also agree with the feelings that donuts are overall overrated. As is cake.
  • California propositions suck, insanely. And we still see an inordinate amount of Jamie Foxx, Kevin Hart, Manning Brothers and J Smoove gambling commercials - we just can’t actually DO anything about it. For the foreseeable future.
  • Randy might low-key hate dogs and it’s going to be reckoning time soon no matter how he tries to avoid the direct questioning.

If you can steel your nerves against the default amounts and percentages set up by the people programming the machine, this is exactly what we have now.

This is peak late capitalism no? Company collects revenue in exchange for saving you time to figure out various tip amounts. Such convenience!

It is, at least in the Badger household. Two cars, gas caps on opposite sides. Plus stalk gear shift on one & traditional shifter on the other, keeps me on my toes as we alternate cars often.

We have this at my club as well, it’s supposed to go to staff to keep thier wage higher during the slow season but it’s on everything from food to a 150 dollar bottle of wine and then i feel bad if i dont tip 20 percent so everything is 35 percent higher than the menu prices which are already crazy. So i end up paying like 74 dollars for a mediocre veal parm and just don’t eat at club anymore. Also if you ask the employees they never see that money and you can’t get a straight answer where the money goes from the gm.

This is exactly what is happening at my club. So last Christmas Eve my son and I stopped in for lunch. It was really slow so I finally asked our Food and Beverage manager to explain it to me. She said the service charge goes back to the club, not the employee. It’s supposed to be used to help the club be able to afford to pay the staff a living wage and during the slow times. But she also indicated that the staff doesn’t like it because people don’t tip much. And she said people working in the service industry come to rely on and expect tips. She also said they all understand why people don’t tip as much, but that it’s caused some frustrations.

Personally I think it’s bullshit and just being used to prop up the pub so that the GM doesn’t have to care about it. He views it as somewhere to get something to eat when you’re already there instead of trying to make it a place you’d want to go over another restaurant in town, which is what the F&B manager and head chef want to do.

So, instead of just base raising the prices, they put a service charge on there? That’s disgusting to me. If I see a ā€œService chargeā€ I assume it’s going to my server, not the owner.
