I rarely have an assigned seat when I fly, didn’t even cross my mind.
Step one is to Check everything.
The second step is to go to the airport bar and sit on a stool before to minimize the time spent cramming your legs into a small space and having @Mr.Alleged recline into them.

As a taller person who often flies without assigned seats it’s a tough scene. I’d love to minimize time on the plane, but am not willing to risk being in a middle seat. So I get on early because the aisle seat (or, ideally, exit row) is worth the extra time.
The new United lounge in C is one of the best lounges I have been in in the US.
