Yeah, Hawaii rental car prices are highly variable. They have a large supply for peak weeks, so if you’re traveling in an off week (like mid December), its very cheap.
I actually didn’t stick with the $35 a day full size I mentioned above. I was able to negotiate into a Ford Expedition for another $20 a day, which was an excellent decision.
FYI, my anti-Southwest bent goes back a long ways. The employees have a real smug “our shit don’t stink” attitude when they’ve been hiding problems the whole time. Nobody brings up that they’ve been near the bottom of the DOT A14 rankings for about the last 10 years, or that they have been quietly the highest fare on many markets they fly with a competitor. Or most important, Southwest was the reason Boeing cut corners on developing the Max instead of designing a new airplane from scratch like every fucking other airline in the world wanted (Airbus really loves this part).
I’m delighting in the crumbling of Southwest, it’s been a long time coming.

Oh and folks, just because my OCD is being triggered, a partial list of IATA Airline Codes:
SW = Air Namibia
WN = Southwest
AA = American Airlines
DL = Delta Air Lines
UA = United Airlines
F9 = Frontier Airlines
B6 = JetBlue
NK = Spirit Airlines
Anecdotally, I’ve heard it to mean “We’re Nuts,” but to be honest I have no idea if that’s the true reason why that’s their code. They could have acquired it from another airline like America West did when they started up. They used Hawaiian Pacific’s old code of HP (not sure who was using AW).
Edit: found this article with some more details but no conclusion:
I’m legitimately curious to see what Mayor Secretary Pete Buttigieg does here.
This is an opportunity to drop a Macho Man elbow from the top rope on a company that deserves it. Some bullshit little fine or a slick tweet ain’t going to cut it.
About 6-7 years ago wife had regular work travel where SW was the best option so she had the companion pass and a ton of points to burn so we flew SW quite a lot. I never understood the hate for SW. The boarding process is fine but it seemed like people just hated adapting to something slightly different. We never had any logistical problems with them (beyond your typical weather-related delays beyond their control) and, at the time, they filled in the cracks which the majors passed over.
Since then their pricing has become utterly non competitive so I haven’t flown them in years so I can’t speak to any deteriorating in service. But it seems they have really suffered post-COVID and I can’t imagine flying with them any time soon after this debacle.
Hey this was me! Full travel, companion pass for wife, boarding complaints are overblown (I then was usually A1 so that helped before biz select got fully running). Also allowed no show, full refund credit cancels but have ended (I’d book 2 flights same day if weather approaching, jerk.)
The only reason I would stay loyal now that I don’t fly enough for status is price difference with 2 checked bags (clubs, baby gear). Does that make still worthwhile vs carry on travel?
And locally, they seemed to get out at MDW and recover better than ORD - maybe more control of general airport traffic?
Southwest cancelled my flight from BWI to RDU, next option to rebook was Jan 2. They have to get their shit together, they are fast becoming US Air (truly the worst airline that ever existed).
My dad is is driving me to North Carolina tomorrow. Forever the GOAT.
I fly Southwest a lot because it’s convenient to get to Baltimore and Providence from RDU (as well as the west coast). I think the decision to use any airline is mostly based on where they fly direct from your home airport. If you live near big hubs, you have more of a choice than at smaller airports
Again, this is a perfect time for the government regulator to make a statement with a massive fine and sanctions. You know, things they’re already empowered to do but don’t for some reason.
Does a fine do anything at all besides increase the price for Southwest customers for the foreseeable future? I don’t know how you justly punish an airline.
I mean fuck Southwest for all this bullshit, but fuck the legacy carriers for charging $2500 for ECONOMY for a flight from STL to DC while people are trying to find ways to make their vacations work.
I live 1.2 miles from LUV…I fly enough yearly to be Platinum on American…my wife enough to be Executive Platinum. Have lived in Dallas since 1990…and can honestly say I have flown WN maybe 25-30 total times…the one time a year I do…I deeply regret it.
That means I drive by LUV each and every time I fly…and so does my wife…and this story is not dissimilar from other biz dominate travelers that we know, live by, work with, etc…(literally takes me 15 mins from my front door, parked, through security, and at a gate)
The obvious stuff…direct locations, upgrades, lounges, perks for international/long haul etc. etc…are why i prefer AA…(i know there is deep hatred for AA on here…but im loyal i guess) BUT man every SWA experience feels like amateur hour and folks act like they have never been on a plane before…
